Title: I'm scared. I think I'm GAS free :oO
Post by: Twinfan on September 16, 2009, 03:23:09 PM
:o

* My amp situation has been completely sorted since my Martamp Orion was Power Scaled
* My pedal board was completed a few months back with an Empress ParaEQ
* I picked up my WezV custom built Esquire a few weeks ago
* I got some new cables and a tuner recently via a small bonus from work
* I went to the Leeds and Bradford Guitar Show last weekend and got bored(!)
* I'm selling my remaining PRS McCarty Rosewood as it's just not getting used

So looking at all that I think I'm done?  it's quite an odd situation to be in.  I'd like to try a Bigsby equipped guitar at some point but I don't think I'd use it enough to justify buying one.

Have I REALLY banished GAS??????  If not, what on earth would I buy next??????

Buy quality tone seeker gifts for another guitarist who is also called Dave... Its the next best thing to buying it for yourself!  :P

When you think you're GAS free, it's like the first person to die in a horror film but they don't know it yet.

It'll hit you soon.

I got a great new amp, very happy with everything, but I discovered last night I HAVE TO have a James Trussart Steelcaster Deluxe with the F hole and a humbucker in the neck.

So what guitars are you playing most at the moment? I am guessing the Modern Eagle, Fano and your Teles?
I am sure your tele phase will end soon, and you will suddenly decide that single coils 'aren't really you' ;)

I seem to remember you saying you afforded most of your guitars through credit cards? You could make sure they are all paid up I suppose, even if it does sound boring :D

Nah, my tip for 2010 (maybe earlier) is that we'll be digging up a certain "strat-dissing" thread that someone started a while back, and waving it around at, er, someone...

But "this" strat will be different...

EDIT: Curses! I wasn't gonna say nuffink, wuz I?

There must be something that has replaced it Dave.

On a serious note it's good to hear that you've reached the end of the GAS road. I'm nearly there myself, just a strat and I'll be a happy camper.

I got rumbled by Matt, clearly!  I forgot I'd posted that 12 months ago!  I've sold a large number of guitars since then too  :o

I'm definite this time though.  I've got everything and I've discovered what I really like.

So what guitars are you playing most at the moment? I am guessing the Modern Eagle, Fano and your Teles?

Yep, my top players are actually my four favourite guitars:

* Modern Eagle
* La Cabronita
* CS Relic Tele
* Fano JM6

With those, and my Martamp Orion, I can cover everything I like playing.

we should use the knowledge of crowds technique off Derren Brown, so everyone guesses how long Dave will last without GAS, find the average, and see how close we get

actually what we need is some economic analysis, hence using complex calculations I have come up with a GAS response curve!!!

 that's great JDC - but to be accurate, and TF can confirm, I think you need to swap the PRS and BKP labels round...

Sadly, I think you could do something similar for most of us

Oh and Andy, no Strats!  I have one, it was my first guitar, and I won't be buying another......

 we'll store that one away for future reference... I just got a feeling...

No-one on this forum will be putting any money on you staying GAS-free for more than a few weeks...

It changes into more gas, for different things!

Dave will either
- Start playing metal
- Or jazz
- Play bass
- Set up a home studio
- Change tastes in pickups/guitars/amps
- Switch to rack gear
- Go acoustc

Its just a matter of time.

Dave will either
- Start playing metal

I can do that with the rig I've got if I wanted to

- Or jazz

I HATE jazz!

- Play bass

Tried it before, didn't like it

- Set up a home studio

To do what? Record my sloppy playing?  What's the point!

- Change tastes in pickups/guitars/amps

Been doing that for 25+ years, I think I've reached the end of the cycle

- Switch to rack gear

Are you mad?  Move away from tasty hand built Martamps?????

- Go acoustic

I've got a 6 and a 12 string if I decide to do that

See?  I've done everything.  There's nothing left.  I'm finished...

If you've been through several expensive brands and boutique gear, the next step is vintage gear.

Vintage GAS is the most expensive one.

Too risky though isn't it?  With all the fakes around, and re-fin work etc, do you REALLY know what you're buying?  I'm not a risk taker, and I don't have the amount of crazy cash to gamble away anyway!

I do - I only use it for 'DC gigs as whenever I pick it up I always go into Angus mode!  I can't seem to play anything other than 'DC on it

Well spotted on the BKP front Tellboy.  When my PRS McCarty sells I'll be down to just the one set.  Having tried quite a few sets, I personally don't believe in the blind assumption that every guitar can be improved by a BKP pickup swap.  Some are great as stock, and others are better suited to different pickups.  All in my opinion and experience of course  :)

It's funny how my first set has been the only one that stayed!

Yep, they're all mahogany - neck, body, top, back and sides.  I got them before they switch to using Sapele instead, and the J12-15 is now discontinued.

They weren't that dear if I remember rightly.  Around £850 for the 12-string and £650ish for the 6-string.

I'm all humbuckered out, so there's no need for the Zematis.  My Modern Eagle is #1 for 'bucker duties, closely followed by my Korina McCarty.

I tried a Doozie and thought they felt a bit insubstantial.  Not sure what I'd use it for either.

Trussarts are cool, but £3k?  Not sure they're worth that to me.

There's no way of knowing if it really is original these days. Unless it's been from a trustworthy one owner I'm afraid. There were something like a 1000 strats made in 54 - do a search on GBase and you'll find several thousand originals for sale. Numbers probably aren't perfect but in the right ballpark  :?

Stupidly I popped along to the GV sale this morning. I tried that white over S'Burst CS strat out. Big mistake. It was lovely and made me think bad things.

I played it through an old Marshall combo (it was very dark blue with the silver grille - may have been a JMP but the letters were nearly rubbed off). The sound was pretty much sublime in all positions, the neck sound was classic strat (yes, I sound like Alan Partridge) and very bell like. Te in bteween positions were great. I now realise I should not have gone!

Now dreaming of ways to emulate Derren Browns 'achievement' last week.

 :D But you're GAS free aren't you?

The Esquire is staying put for a while to be honest! At the moment it's that familiar old feeling of what can I sell. I've been there too many times before so I'm determined to keep the Esquire. I do think my best bet will be to wait and see what strats are around when I have some £s to spare. I know if I move the Esquire on I'll regret it later.

Oh dear, Ian, you poor chap...  :( I sympathise greatly...

I must admit though, I was wondering how a fellow who still has a strat as his avatar, could possibly be satisfied with a single bridge pickup, albeit a very tasty single bridge pickup.

Alas, you give it all away, your inner turmoil, with which you must have been fighting for weeks now, with the single phrase "Te in bteween positions were great."...

Have you so missed this, and are you so unbalanced by experiencing it again... that you can't even type straight anymore?

I don't know what to suggest, but I shall be thinking of you, supportively, as I go back to my nice new guitar with it's gorgeous classic strat tones...  (and from which, after some judicious twiddling of the Tex Mex pickup heights, I am experiencing not one, but TWO, absolutely divine in-between-tones)

Alas, you give it all away, your inner turmoil, with which you must have been fighting for weeks now, with the single phrase "Te in bteween positions were great."...

Have you so missed this, and are you so unbalanced by experiencing it again... that you can't even type straight anymore?

:D Just re-read that. Missed it first time. The small keys on my laptop are firmly to blame!

I thought that might be it - I have the same problem. Then when I go back to work on monday, I can't type on a proper keyboard again for an hour or so

I have to agree with this completely and utterly. It was shame I couldn't get to the meet, so I don't know for certain, but I have a feeling that that Esquire is something not to let go of. It obviously grabs you, and it sounds like it's one of those that anyone else playing it would covet it as well... If you went right off it, then who cares, sell it, but I don't think you're going to...

Have you still got all of your body parts? Mebbe you could sell one or two of those? (Or perhaps a relative might consider donating something?)

:D I never had any spare body parts to start with :D I've got a few things around the house that I could move on if I absolutely have to but not sure Jane will be happy about that.

I really hate being a guitary person sometimes. Endless scheming and searching for great guitars.

But as a one-guitar man you haven't got much left to sell, have you?

Obviously I haven't tried the Strat, but I agree with those who say keep the Esquire.  It's that little bit more unusual, I think you'd really regret selling it in years to come.

But back to that Strat... what was the neck shape like?  I think in theory a 1960 should be pretty skinny, but I don't know how vintage-accurate they've been.

Definitely C shape - a little bit skinnier than I was expecting but still meaty enough (for me at least). I think the most sensbile course of action is to no let my heart rule my head and hold fire for the time being.

I'm sure everyone goes through these phases at some point - don't they?

As far as stuff to sell goes you're right that I'm a one guitar man, one amp and no effects. I do have quite a lot of other non guitar related stuff that I could sell if I really wanted to - probably best not to at the moment.

Dave- apologies for the thread jack. Wish I was GAS free, maybe there should be a GAS addiction centre/support group.

Definitely - but I find if a can wait a couple of weeks (or more) many cases of GAS disappear completely.  I'm getting a bit better at that.

If the GAS is still there after two weeks or a month.... then it's a problem!
