Hey guys I'm new to the forum. I've researched this topic to death but am hoping you guys can help me clear things up a bit.
I have a Holy Diver in my Fender Baritone Jaguar.
(Alder body, bolt on maple neck, rosewood fretboard, 27 inch scale, stoptail bridge)
I recorded this clip with it. Love the punch it has
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=938649&songID=8036136
I have just bought a PRS baritone which is slightly brighter with a touch less mids than the Fender
( lightweight mahogany body, set in maple neck, ebony fretboard 28 inch scale, string thru bridge)
I'm just wondering what a good pickup would be for it. I was going to play it safe and just get another Holy Diver but sometimes the HD feels a little too dark in the mids. The thing worrying me about the Rebel Yell or Nailbomb is that the highs might be too ice picky/harsh as my Splawn Nitro amp is quite twangy as it is. Also that the RY might not be grunty enough compared to the HD or that the Nailbomb is too loose in the bottom end. Any advice would be welcomed. I play Deftones style modern alt/metal/rock.
-
Hi there and welcome!! I do not have experience with the HD's but I do have RY's and a Splawn Comp., the RY's dont have anything picky much less harsh about them on this or any other amp we have try them in. I seem to recall reading about baritone guitars and the BKP's that work great on them. Some gentleman might pinch in with more information for sure. You might Email Tim for advice too, ask him for what you are after on that baritone guitar in combination with the Nitro( Monster low end amp! ). Enyoyed the clip!!
-
Thanks so much for the reply! If anyone else has any knowledge please feel free to chime in. Would a Rebel Yell just be a slightly less hot nailbomb or are they different beasts entirely?

this is serious shite, brother
I usually get bored with the new generation of Mesuhggah fans, but I just can't stop listening to this
any more clips? :D
is this the Nitro?
the Nailbomb is not loose at all
it's tighter the Diver I had, and about just as tight as the Cold Sweat i have in my other Les Paul
it's a bit louder and hotter than the Diver, but brighter, less smooth and less middy (and I miss that)
the Nailbomb is more like a fatter and less aggressive Cold Sweat, but no near as middy, "bouncy" and fluid as the Diver was
-
Hey dude thanks for the reply I've noticed all of your replies during my research and you are always right on the money with your tone descriptions and knowledge. I really love the diver but this new PRS of mine seems to already have everything the diver is giving the Fender as far as low mids and lows go so putting the HD in it may be overkill. HOWEVER the slightly tamed top end response of the Diver would be perfect for the PRS as it is only JUST too dull for the Fender and the PRS is much brighter and has more low end/less mids. The jaguar is so warm in the top end acousticly.
"*My ideal pickup is a holy Diver but with slightly more focus on the upper mids and with clearer not as dark lower mids. I still want the punch of the HDs output, those forward mids and compression but without the darkness in the mids. The Rebel Yell looks like its the one but I'm afraid it may be not aggressive enough for the heavier side of things.*"
How would you compare the Nailbomb and the Rebel Yell if you could? Oh and yep it is the nitro. Thats the only clip of it. The other songs are Engl, mesa mkIV and Bogner uber depending on the track. Thanks for the kind words :-)

Would a ceramic nailbomb be just right?
-
Thats actually a really interesting suggestion and not part of my research regime!! I will go and do a bit of reading. I do really like the sweetness of Alnico though and was trying to avoid going ceramic. I'll do some studying up on this though. Thanks mate

listening! :D :D :D
you can always ask tim for a custom winding
maybe an upper mid enhanced diver or an alnico painkiller
-
i'll post my impressions of the above pickups later (yawn... got to sleep a bit more...), but i have a little doubt about one thing... a baritone mahogany guitar sounds BRIGHTER than an alder jaguar?
-
Yes funnily enough it does sound brighter. The PRS has mahogany body and maple neck with ebony fretboard, the jaguar has Alder body maple neck and rosewood fretboard. JAG= 27inch scale PRS = 27.7 inch scale. So its only natural the PRS is brighter but also has more low end and low mids. The PRS is almost scooped sounding. Mostly highs and lows. The Jaguar is all warm mids due to the Alder and has very little lows and very round highs due to the rosewood and alder acting together. Alder is punchy warm and middy but not bright. Also the extra inch of scale on the PRS gives it a little more brightness too. :P

Nice tone !!! Makes me want an HD for my bubinga baritone. Your tone and singing is sick ! Thats how Soilwork should have turned ;).
-
Thanks dude I love Soilworks stabbing the drama. Killer record. They kinda went bland after that just more of the same. Honestly i don't know anything about Bubinga but if your baritone has a tight bottom end acousticly and is quite toppy and upper middy the HD will thicken it up and smooth it out nicely. HD is all about lower mid punch compression thickness smoothness and chunk

uh uh, i just listened to the clip and it kicks ass, definitely! WOW!
i read somewhere that Tim in person does not suggest Holy Divers in scooped guitars. i had wonderful results from Rebel Yells in a quite scooped guitar, but it's bassy and scooped, not bright like yours, so they could be actually TOO bright in your PRS
-
Thanks dude!! Yeh the rebel yell fits PERFECTLY for the PRS on paper except the only worrying thing is the high end being too much. If it is I'll send it back and get him to rewind it to have similar top end to the holy diver. Thanks again for the kind words bro dog!!! :-)

Well, I pulled the trigger on the Rebel Yells. Big mistake, there is almost a single coil quality to the top end and its nowhere near as aggressive as what I need. The clean tone is absolutely out of this world awesome but as far as heaviness and aggression it just aint cutting it. Even though its top end is cutting my ears up.

if you want agressive why not a ceramic bridge then?
-
Yep I'm now trying to decide between a ceramic nailbomb and a cold sweat. Any advice appreciated :D
-
Anyone know what would be more middy between the two? Also which would be brighter and which would be most bass heavy and loose?
-
Trust me ... There are TONS of very detailed comparisons between CBomb and CS to be found on this forum...
It's the most talked about thing!
The search box is your friend on this one :P

alder + bolt-on sounds quite scooped for my ears :? :? :?
the diver is quite middy
much middier than the nailbomb that is also a common choice for alder

did you play with the height?
I don't think a cold sweat will have less top end
it's a very bright pickup
definitely more aggressive and punchy, but bright and sharp (think Dimebag)
I think you would enjoy a regular alnico warpig, despite of the fatter low mids
it has a grainier midrange and a bit more top end than the diver
-
Yep I played with the height. There is just one certain frequency in the highs of the RYell that is really clashing with my Splawn nitro. It just sounds really single coil ish in the tops. I'm leaning towards a ceramic nailbomb but need to make sure its not going to be too lacking in the mids or too cutting in the top end

Well the search box turned nothing up for ceramic nailbomb vs cold sweat so if you have any links please by all means link me :-)

The guitar the RY went in is not the bolt on alder fender. The Fender has the Holy Divers in it and I couldn't be happier. Those pups will never leave that guitar!! It's the set in maple neck ebony board mahogany body PRS that I just put the RYells into. Definitely a scooped sounding guitar albeit more balanced than the fender with more low end and a sparklier/more detailed top end. Rebel Yell was the wrong choice. First BKP mistake I've made so far out of 3 guitars so not bad going

a baritone mahogany guitar sounds BRIGHTER than an alder jaguar?
Alot of that brightness mentioned with the PRS is pretty common. Due to the extremely thick finish. They slap on so much finish, it barely sounds like mahog anymore XD

It could be a little to do with that but the bottom end and body resonance still definitely sounds like Mahogany to my ears. For this particular guitar it is a lot more to do with the 28 inch scale, ebony fretboard and Maple neck. Any guitar with extended scale will be automatically brighter and clearer especially with neck and fretboard materials such as this one. This thing resonates like a mother$@#ker but its missing a few mids understandably with the woods involved
-
Just saying *shrugs* the 25 scale mahogany PRSs sounded kinda thin. That kind of finish really holds a strong affect on the tone.

I know that, but the holy diver is one of the most common recommendations for alder + bolt-on neck
btw, the nailbomb didn't sound middy in my les paul custom :(
I still think you would enjoy the warpig
-
I don't know about RY's on a PRS + Nitro, but RY's on a Les Paul + Quick rod or a Competition .. Yes.. that's more likely. Like HTH said Warpigs might be a better choice! In any case give Tim a call or email him! Good luck on you search!
