I normally like that shape at the bottom, but in fact on this guitar I think the LP Jr type at top right looks really good.  It just seems to work with the Floyd and humbucker.

I think middle right would look great if it had a neck 'buker. I like the way the bottom one hugs the pickup, it ties it together.

we can also take pointers on other designs if anyone has ideas, doesnt take long to mock them up with some black card

well this guitar is definately a little bar-steward so i had to get the la cabronita style guard in there - especially since i have a template for it ;)

What about something like a "split guard" ?

(disclaimer : quicly&badly done, just to get the idea)

Well... might work better with a neck bucker in fact  :?

[edit]
Ho, and FWIW else I voted for the top-right

No guard.

My thoughts exactly!  8)

I voted top-left (standard tele), then quickly changed my mind to middle right  :?

here it is with no guard and the firebirdish headstock

i think a guard will look better

I like it without... but if it has to have one I'll be boring and say a standard plate but how about in rosewood?

Looks like the traditional approach is forging well ahead in the poll.....

It needs to be no guard with a pointy reverse headstock. Supertele's rock!

I agree. And I still think a "split guard" would complement the firebirdish headstock

ok, me -->[]

i do think the split guard is interesting... but not with this pickup choice.

maybe it will be none of the ones i have tried so far, but i dont think traditional is the way to go - although i can see the appeal.  if i get chance i will try some other tomorrow

This looks lovely! NO guard!!!

If you REALLY need one, get the traditional...

Split guard would look good with a different pickup layout. No guard looks good though.

If it had no guard then it would have to be rear routed and have a flame top imo :p

I like the way a guard ties the tele control plate in to the body. The split design looks very Firebird but too much for the smaller body I think.

Maybe you should just send me the cardboard prototypes and some blue tack then I could change it often :p

Yeps, you're right, the split guard works better with at least 2 pups - without the neck, there's something missing.

But still, IMHO, this axe really needs a pickguard to match the headstock.  What about something a bit more "custom" like then ?

i think thats a bit too vintage for the floyd.  makes me think of an epiphone coronet... almost

As far as I'm concerned, I'd say the floyd is not vintage enough for this guitar - but YMMV of course

Mmm... About the coronet, it probably has to do with the combination of the guard taking most of the first half of the body, and the headstock shape. But the coronet's pickguard is symetrical.

you are right about the coronet thing - its just where my head went

the one you did is quite firebird, but nonreverse firebird... and the headstock is reverse firebird.   it does work really well actually.  it would suit a TOM and mini-humbucker version of this quite well

this looks the best so far, but then again I do own a 72 Tele Custom RI which is my fave Tele design.

I like the normal tele guard. Reminds me of my humbucker tele but I do have a neck pickup. The SG jr style works well too.

I like the top right one, but I like how the middle right is shaped around the controls...

It does look really good, but I'm not quite sure about it on a one-pickup guitar - it would look even better with a neck minibucker.  Or a Tele neck pickup.  Something with a chrome cover.

BigB's split in three, kinda like a Burns Marvin.

Interesting!

I was the first person that voted "top left" but kept me mouth shut because I thought it was probably a bit conservative and I'd be in the minority...  apparently not

With how the thread's progressed though - no guard doesn't look too bad at all for my money... and I don't usually go for that.

But I'm posting now to add my voice in approval of BigB's :D

Just wondering if an LP type guard could be made to work?
