ok, the title of the thread is probably a bit misleading, but what I mean is - what album have you discovered for the first time in 2009 that really blew you away.
for me I've kept coming back to the Glasvegas album time and time again - a total masterpiece.

-
For me I think it's probably "88 Elmira Street" by Danny Gatton.
-
cold world - dedicated to babies that came feet first
-
Probably not an album as such, but I'm glad I discovered Peter Green this year. I'd heard the rave reviews but never really "got it". I do now.
-
The discovery that stands out heads and shoulders above everything else I've come across this year is Neil Young's Harvest.
-
Pain Agency by Sucioperro is my most played album of the year. That and the new Biffy Clyro album, Only Revolutions is fantastic.
I also got into a load of new bands this year, my music library doubled in size. I've had so much time to listen to music I've been hunting out new bands like a fat kid searches for cake.

I'd have put money on Peter Green being in your riff arsenal already. Surprising TF.
Glad you're digging his stuff though - I love how he had his own vibe (and tone) altogether from the other players around at the time. My old science teacher at school always went on about PG, but it wasn't till many years later that I heard his stuff.
I'm probably alone in thinking this, but I don't really like his stuff on the Bluesbreakers album he did - does nothing for me. However, in Fleetwood Mac PG just flat out rawked. This tone is what its all about...

Feel the Steel
-
For just pure enjoyment - John Mayer - Battle Studies
Because I was looking forward to it - The Answer - Everyday Demons
For happen-stance - Steel Panther - Feel The Steel

I'd heard of him, but never bought his stuff. I saw a documentary on early Fleetwood Mac, bought some albums, and there you go. I actually love his voice more than his guitar playing.
You have to love some of Hard Road HTH - The Stumble is an absolute classic!

My top fifteen as compiled for other forums:
Dragged Into Sunlight - Hatred for Mankind
Black Sun - Code Black
Anaal Nathrakh - In The Constellation...
Brutal Truth - Evolution Through Revolution
Napalm Death - Time Waits For No Slave
Fen - The Malediction Fields
Agoraphobic Nosebleed - Agorapocalypse
Blut Aus Nord - Memoria Vetusta II...
Cobalt - Gin
Absu - Absu
Steve Earle - Townes
1349 - Revelations of the Black Flame
Wodensthrone - Loss
Isis - Wavering Radiant
Nachtmystium - Doomsday Derelicts
Not in any order but Dragged Into Sunlight's was my favourite of the year.
-
Paul Gilbert & Freddie Nelson - United States.
Took me a while to get into it but now absolutely love it.
And if nothing else Im not sure Ive heard any good albums this year other than that. 2009 sucked for me music-wise.
-
I would say it's either Miasma by Black Dahlia Murder or just anything by Protest The Hero. The shred is the shiz.
-
Aluk Todolo, "Finsternis". Black metal meets krautrock!
-
Can't decide between these three:
Devin Townsend Project - Ki
Devin Townsend Project - Addicted
The Wildhearts - Chutzpah!
All brilliant albums...
-

Great choice!
I love the new Lynch Mob album "Smoke & Mirrors" plus...
Danger Danger - Revolve
Europe - Last Look At Eden

I can't think of any exciting album, new or old, I've actually discovered for the first time this year.
I still listening to my usual old stuff, and I've bought a few new releases but nothing that blew me away. Unless I've forgotten something.
But that reminds me I still haven't heard Them Crooked Vultures.... off to Spotify I go.
-
Thought you'd like the new Winger CD Philly.. :?

Oh I do, I do. But I don't think it's as good as IV or Pull, so in that sense I was a bit disappointed. But maybe a few more listens will swing it. :)

I got it twice for xmas - worth buying for sure. Not so sure how much influence I can hear from Grohl and JPJ, but if you like QOTSA you'll like Them Crooked Vultures.

I had a listen on Spotify this afternoon - quite liked it, but a bit too much QOTSA. I like QOTSA and I like Josh Homme, but I liked him 1,000 times better in Kyuss.
I guess I'd really like to hear Grohl and JPJ with some sh!t-hot funky blues-rock monster wailing over the top. Richie Kotzen maybe?
-
Heaven & Hell, The Devil You Know
That's a good shout - I'd never really listened too much to any Sabbath stuff before this year and love this album.
I did get quite a few albums* for Christmas though so the jury is out for me.
*
Electric Ladyland
Bluesbreakers
BB King at The Regal
Boggy Depot
The Incident
Moving Pictures
-
Like Philly, I don't think theres been any 2009 music I've found that interesting or exciting. Was going to say Lady Gaga - The Fame, but apparently that's 2008.

Homme IS at his best in Kyuss. ive always found QOTSA a bit dull. I think Grohl is pretty easy to pick out as a drummer, maybe even in Scream.
-
Europe - Last Look At Eden
Kiss - Sonic Boom
Steel Panther - Feel The Steel
Joie Bonamassa - The Ballad Of John Henry
-
Converge - axe to fall
havent listened to it enough yet, i now know what to put on the ipod for the walk home from work
in regards to Josh Homme, im pretty sick of everything hes done recently, enjoyed early QOTSA, lover Kyuss, once he gave nick oliveri the boot from QOTSA i stopped listening, Homme took full control and steered the boat away from my island of enjoyment

I'm glad I'm not the only one! Everyone seems to be raving about TCV, but I can just hear a rehashed QOTSA. And I don't like QOTSA.....
-
Apart from the old stuff on my ipod, ( I managed to fill a 80g one) I really like Paloma Faiths album. I still listen to stuff from 30 odd years ago like The Faces, Curtis Mayfield. I liked Joe Bonamassa and Derek Trucks new stuff, plus some of that Chicken Head album was ok.
-
I've been listening to Florence & the Machine a lot lately. Great album.
This thread reminded me I need to get that Them Crooked Vultures album!
-
Now you come to mention it, I can't think of a single studio release that I really liked.
My favourite CD purchase of the year was My Dying Bride "Ode to woe" which is a Live CD (i.e. greatest hits + crowd noise :))
MDB's new studio album ("For lies I sire") was a disappointment after their four previous albums (which were all great).
I bought a lot of old releases on CD that I had previously owned on vinyl, so can't really count those. I guess the least disappointing new studio album was Killswitch Engage...
Not a great year for metal... :(

I like Goatwhore, and went to see them recently, but I just find myself thinking "ach, they're less than a sum of their parts".

i disagree... for lies i sire is not on the same levels like a line of deathless kings or the light at the end of the world but it's a good album anyway...
and this year i heard a lot of good to great albums!
-
anyway, my choices are:
1) old band, new album: Paradise Lost - faith divides us, death unites us (they're my favourite band and i'm digging that album since i got it)
2) Emilie Autumn - opheliac. album out for a while but i discovered her in the beginning of this year... love at first sight. :)
3) new band, new album... Florence & The Machine - lungs (almost constantly in my CD - mp3 - car stereo etc...)
-
I think the two albums actually released in 2009 that I've listened to most are Bill Frisell's "Disfarmer" and Bat For Lashes' "Two Suns". Both are fantastic and extremely atmospheric.

+1 for bat for lashes. great album.

Probably not an album as such, but I'm glad I discovered Peter Green this year. I'd heard the rave reviews but never really "got it". I do now.
I've got his Robert Johnson songbook album (after the drugs when he learnt to play again) and although it's got two good ingredients (Peter Green and Robert Johnson), the album is aweful. I was shocked. I like a lot of his other stuff though.
Things I've got in to this year:
New Elbow album - Been in to Elbow for a while, but this is a really good album
Lightspeed Champion
Got back into my old dancehall (skin head) music - Trojan records and the like
