Now you come to mention it, I can't think of a single studio release that I really liked.

My favourite CD purchase of the year was My Dying Bride "Ode to woe" which is a Live CD (i.e. greatest hits + crowd noise :))

MDB's new studio album ("For lies I sire") was a disappointment after their four previous albums (which were all great).

I bought a lot of old releases on CD that I had previously owned on vinyl, so can't really count those.  I guess the least disappointing new studio album was Killswitch Engage...

Not a great year for metal... :(
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

I like Goatwhore, and went to see them recently, but I just find myself thinking "ach, they're less than a sum of their parts".

i disagree... for lies i sire is not on the same levels like a line of deathless kings or the light at the end of the world but it's a good album anyway...
and this year i heard a lot of good to great albums!
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)

anyway, my choices are:

1) old band, new album: Paradise Lost - faith divides us, death unites us (they're my favourite band and i'm digging that album since i got it)

2) Emilie Autumn - opheliac. album out for a while but i discovered her in the beginning of this year... love at first sight. :)

3) new band, new album... Florence & The Machine - lungs (almost constantly in my CD - mp3 - car stereo etc...)
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)

I think the two albums actually released in 2009 that I've listened to most are Bill Frisell's "Disfarmer" and Bat For Lashes' "Two Suns".  Both are fantastic and extremely atmospheric.

Probably not an album as such, but I'm glad I discovered Peter Green this year.  I'd heard the rave reviews but never really "got it".  I do now.

I've got his Robert Johnson songbook album (after the drugs when he learnt to play again) and although it's got two good ingredients (Peter Green and Robert Johnson), the album is aweful.  I was shocked.  I like a lot of his other stuff though.

Things I've got in to this year:

New Elbow album - Been in to Elbow for a while, but this is a really good album
Lightspeed Champion
Got back into my old dancehall (skin head) music - Trojan records and the like

Advice worth what you just paid for it.
