Thanks to Martin (Martamp) who helped me out with shipping, I can celebrate NAD today.
My first non-bouteek in a long long time! It really rocks my socks off, love it!!!!!

Happy NAD! :) I demo'ed one of those last year. Thought it was very impressive, probably the best high gain sound from a Marshall since the JCM900 SL-X. But the lack of an FX loop was a real show stopper for me....

I think I can get along with all FX through the front. Waiting for my Providence Delay to come back from repair (me stupid broke 3 pots on it :? ) - that Providence Delay can go out front and stays out of the way of your tone, really does.
I love that amp, really great tone!!
-
ANOTHER ONE???
give me your H&K, then! :)
jokes apart i never played it but i was always curious... but, like Antag said, no FX loop, no party. damn, it doesn't come that cheap, marshall could have added one, after all!

Not cheap? Well check this out: http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~Marshall-JCM800-2203KK,-Ex-Display~ID~8134.asp
Triamp is sold btw.

quite cheap, indeed...
don't forget that in Italy everything costs at least twice its real price, though!
-
why did you sold your triamp? how did it manage REALLY heavy tones?
-
Nice one - possibly a bit hi-gain for me...
By the way - wot's a FX loop?
-

Triamp wasn't for me. I tried to really like it, because it was such a practicable package (great loop, many distinctive sounds), but I found myself turning the knobs and not liking the result too often ...still a great amp for the money though!
too heavy
I don't think it's really heavy unless you switch on The Beast mode. It's a very good JCM800, so a standard rock amp, which can pull off many different tones. Check the vid, and that's done with just a few minutes having tried it.
-
Actually, yeah... (just listened to it) ... does sound pretty good :D
-
Sounds very cool! :)
-
nice one Hunter, you'll soon have had all the great amps! ;)
hope you get a lot of pleasure from it. so, without the beast mode engaged, it's a standard JCM800, is that right? and it costs less than the standard 800 re-issue?
-
Nicely done as per usual. Very intesting had not thought of it as a JCM800 with a few extra options thrown in.
-
nice score, JCM800s f*ckin' rule!!!
-
Excellent.
-
Brilliant. Now get those nonsense graphics off!

There are a few differences to the normal 800, the KK has:
-Only one input (High, JCM800 has High and Low)
-Bigger transformers - those from the JVM
-KT88s instead of EL34s
-No FX loop whereas the reissue has one
-
I have a great suggestion for Marshall ....
Reintroduce models 2203,2204,2205 and 2210?
MAY PROVE TOP BE VERY POPULAR

If you are ever selling this amp and would take sexual favours in return for it. Give me a shout. I really, really want one of these!
How are you getting along with it, full review please!!!

ah, i see. any thoughts on how the KT88s sound different from EL34s?

There are still at least ca. 250 that are on the list for trying out one day ;)
Brilliant. Now get those nonsense graphics off!
Either that or shave my head, get em tattooed on it, grow a 30cm chin beard and wear really really heavy chains instead of a belt.

I have bad GAS some days, but I don't think tone quest related dedication ever drove me that far!

I think they move more air and extend the frequency range especially in the low end. I never felt so much low end punch by a Marshall before, without getting boomy. I did have to turn down treble and presence a lot though.
I wonder if it's got that bright cap thingy that I should cap?

Here some pics from guts and stuff:

And some more, the last one is the beast circuit (hidden by the PCB):

Hey hunter, have fun with your new amp! Very nice tone in the video.
One question, as i consider myself a jcm800 instead of going the jvm410 route (either kk or the reissue one with the loop) and i'm thinking if its right gain wise for some 80s hair metal (of course kk has the beast) can you tell me the setting of the ocd when its kicked in in your video? (i have one myself) is it set like a clean boost (gain zero, volume up, LP mode) or are you adding some gain from it?

I think it's adding some gain, but minimal, maybe gain at 1/10, but I run in the high setting on the mini switch.
I do recommend the KK over the JVM, it's much more versatile than you think, especially if you slave it for FX (see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTsca2T-g6c)
-
Thanks mate!
Yeah thats what i'm thinking of doing, a wet / dry setup (actually i already do it with my Dsl50 and Tsl60 heads) because for my music style, delay on solos is a must and sometimes so is flangers, phasers, choruses etc, so jcm800 with my hotplate line out to fx and then to my dsl50 power amp, two cabs, one for the jcm800 and one for the dsl50.
The only thing that the reissue has as an advantage is the fx loop for stand alone use of the amp with fx but i hear you say that the kk is better built, so may worth going for the kk version.

I didn't say the KK was better built. I have no knowledge of the build quality of a RI 800. Maybe compare them side by side as the KK will sound different with its KT88s.

great tone on this one!
it's a bit of a complication and i'm struggling to keep things simple, but it works perfectly!
-
Sounds really good :) Just hate that graphic. I wanted one of these ages ago but no fx loop is a bit of a pain for me (use an eq in the loop for leads) and I can probably get similar enough tones with my Laney :P
-
I missed this thread until now, nice one Mr Amps! :D
Sounds good and looks good too. People are slagging off the graphics but I think they're quite subtle, you still see a Marshall long before you notice the graphics.

I was thinking that too...
By choice, I'd go without the graphics. But if I wanted the amp, the graphics wouldn't worry me.

That's what I thought, a GHXXL is similar to an 800, maybe a bit more low mids and more smooth top end. You would be stunned if you'd go the W/D route for trying. Really, you should try it, take whatever other amp (SS or tube) and slave the Laney for Wet, it's very different to running delay in the loop!

Its a great sounding amp, enjoyed the videos too. However, I'm disappointed in Marshall using PCB-mounted valve bases. This is a no-no for me, and especially with the heat KT88s produce and at the price point the amp sells for.
Its just FACT that amps with valve bases mounted the the PCB in that manner will experience problems somewhere down the line - generally out of warranty

I know it's not ideal, but it's a feature that all my amps share, the XTC 100B, the Steavens and now the Marshall. The XTC runs pretty hot, running at 570V plates, and it survived 15 years like that.
And talking about price, the price of the KK was 499GBP from shop with warranty and all. The power tubes alone would cost me 150€ LOL
-
That's a great sounding amp! I've had a GAS for a good Marshall (tone) for some time now and this is not helping. Or it IS helping, depending on how you look at it
I see Marshall also has a JCM 800 (2203) on their website, would love to do a head to head comparison between these too. I can live without the FX loop, and the low input too. I'm not buying a Marshall for its clean tone.

sure, i never used the low input... but the loop, the loop... :(

Good morning!
I didn't say the KK was better built. I have no knowledge of the build quality of a RI 800. Maybe compare them side by side as the KK will sound different with its KT88s.
I was talking about the bigger transformers part which in my book is better build, for example my Mercury OT on my DSL50 made a difference in tone. Of course i will try them side by side, as well as a JVM and a few other amps like the 5153, i plan to buy it in about a month (to make me a small birthday present... :P )
sure, i never used the low input... but the loop, the loop...
Yeah, i wonder who at marshall made this decision of non including a fx loop! Ok maybe Kerry is not using one (probably goes to a W/D setup, but this amp will not be used by only Kerry... and how many people have the advantage to be able to use a W/D setup? Especially those playin lives in small places...if it had one it would be a perfect amp in this category!
By the way Hunter, how do you like the Palmer PDI09? I’m using the line out of my hotplate (without attenuating the amp) and I’m somewhat satisfied with it but I would like to have a dedicated device for this kind of work without being bound by the specific ohms of the hotplate.

I love the PDI-09!!!!! Its speaker sim is also pretty decent, really maybe the best I've heard, surely the best non IR based.
I have to say, an FX loop will NEVER sound as clear as a W/D setup. I never tried it before but it kills!
And I have an idea for a smaller rig, which will look like this:
-
Too complicated. All I want to do is stick an EQ in the loop for lead boosts!
-

the wet/dry route works really well and a lot of players do use it
Whilst many know that EVH does exactly this - especially as the old Marshalls had no loop and it gave him a lot of clarity
The other player who had an obsession with it is Brian May
That is why he always uses AC30s in 3s or multiples of 3
He says it eliminates intermodulation distortion within the amp that occurs when using echos and other FX.
And certainly amps that have a parallel FX loop retain a better signal when using certain FX units that seem to rob tone and dynamics when used in series within an amp's loop. I found this out using a rack - the Alesis quadraverb was a big tone sucker when placed in series after a preamp . Using a mixer and putting it in parallel massively improved my sound .
The TC Electronics units I use now do seem somewhat better in that respect and I get away with using them in series - although I keep planning on putting them in parallel again.

Jonathan I was thinking about your small tube power amp as the ideal companion for the wet signal amplification 8)
-
One thing it bothers me with the W/D setup (the few times i have use it) is that when using two 4x12 cabs (one dry / one wet) delay becomes a little bit weaker, i like my solos (when "shredding" 80s hair metal) to be a little more wet in total (which when using the fx loop of my DSL50 is achieved).
Of course i haven't used one cab in stereo with the two signal blended in a 4x12 which may be a better mix due to the fact that i'm ohm bound with the hotplate. That's why i'm interested in the palmer or the suhr one that caught my eye.
-
And one other small question... about is volume in a loud (not too loud but not TV like either, think about a loud hifi system) bedroom enviroment, is the amp controllable?
Because i keep hearing horror stories about how the JCM800 is insanely loud and cannot be used for bedroom use etc (although i do have a hotplate if ultimately is needed), for a person who uses a DSL50 full stack or a DSL50 & TSL60 halfstack together for playing (granted master is low on the amps), is the 800 still too loud?
-
Hi Dragoneti,
The amount of Wet you get depends on how loud you turn the wet part of your rig. The volume of your Wet amp becomes the fx mix control of your parallel loop. It just sounds clearer than with a loop (though I'm not sure yet if I'll settle on the hassle that comes with it.
Regarding the volume, the amp surely sounds good in all out Beast mode even at TV volumes, however if you play crunch/cleans and dynamic styles it sounds better the more you turn it up.
Just try it in a shop is what i'd suggest if you're interested in the amp.

Thanks for your reply Hunter!
Yeah i know that the volume of my power amp effects the wetness of the signal, but i have a feeling that 2 cabs are tougher to blend to my ears (the dry one has g12h30s the wet one g12m25s) so it may be better on one cab as a "stereo".
Taking the chance, let me describe my current Dry/wet setup as a reference for others interested (but also to hear some suggestions on its improvment). Guitar goes directly to DSL50 input, (no fx on the dsl50 - the dry part) DSL speaker out to THD hotplate and from there to a 1960a cab with g12h30s 70's anivvesary. From the THD's line out goes a cable to a TC nova modulator (or several mxr evh stompboxes depanding on the mood) and from it to a boss DD20 and sometimes a RV5 and then to the power amp section of a TSL60 (fx mix to full with clean channel selected, volume of, as to bypass completely the preamp section of the amp) and finally to a framus dragon 412 cab with g12m25s.
So volume wise it not the uncontrolable moster that some describe, at least in comparison with other tube mashall stacks. Yeah i will try before i buy, dammit i just lost an opportunity to buy a 2 year old 800RI in mint condition (played only in a bedroom enviroment also) for 800 euros and very close to my home. When i found about it, was already sold to someone else. :(
Oh well... i guess that in about 25 days...i'll buy one...new :D
