Title: Bare Knuckles Pickup Help....
Post by: bradcole on February 12, 2010, 12:06:54 AM
Brad here,
I am dying to get into Bare Knuckle pu game but have not found enough in the way of sound bites and the like to figure out which pickup is THE pickup I am looking for. I currently have a Seymour Duncan '59 (neck) and aSD Duncan Distortion (bridge) in my '76 LP Custom.  Because I am most familiar with the Seymour Duncan line... I am looking for (without being insulting to Bare Knuckles) BK's version of the Duncan Distortion to use as a starting point. I am looking at the Rebel Yell's or the Nailbombs. Any help with would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome!

So what guitar & amps are you using - what band/tone are you aiming for?

Well the Duncan Distortion is a Ceramic pickup, and a very middy (and muddy) one!
The BKP cliosest to the Sh-6 would be the Painkiller but it is much clearer and a hundred times tighter than the Sh-6!

I run a JCM 800 2203 reissue through 2 1960 BV cabs. Music is melodic rock i.e. Quicksand, Foo Fighters. Love the tightness of the bass with the duncan dist, but would love more clarity, bigger sound, less sizzle, and one that cleans up a bit better. I use both my guitar volume and a volume pedal live.

p.s.  I am, by no means, partial to the ceramic magnet.

Did you AskTim(tm) ? The guy is just incredibly good at picking up (lame pun, sorry) the right pup for your guitar, style and requirements.

Afghan Dave,
Please take no offense to my previous post...  It's just with that many views and no subsequent replies I was assuming/ confirming that was the case. This is going to be my first BK pickup and as I am not swimming in cash I just want to make the right call. In this case, as many opinions as possible is a good thing. I would thank you for replying so quickly and giving me my reference point.

So, with the Cold Sweats, can you coil split them? and if so, do they sound pretty good split?

I have a calibrated set of Cold Sweats in my PRS Standard 24. They can be suppplied as 4 conductor and are therefore easy to coil split (diagram supplied with  pickup). Very pleased with mine both in full humbucker mode and in coil split mode. I was a little worried about installing a (relatively) high output ceramic pickup but found that they can cover a wide range of music styles especially with the coil split.

The Cold Sweat is what you need! I have one in a Epi LP and play it through a Marshall 2204 halfstack. Great Foo tones and it can even do heavy stuff like Mastodon. It has just the right amount of push with great clarity, tight low end and amazing mids! Super crunchy!  :band5:

EDIT: forgot to say it also cleans up great, although it's that typical ceramic-type clean sound. Don't know how to describe it but you can tell it's not alnico (I actually prefer that type of clean sound when playing rock and metal)

I pretty much concur with Afghan Dave but suggest another option that woould please

I love the Cold Sweat Set , but also recommend A Miracle Man bridge with a cold sweat neck as a replacement for what you have.

It gives a couple of choices

forgot to mention something...
I love the cold sweat in my les paul copy, BUT I don't like how it sounds through my modded JMP 2204
the diver and nailbomb sound better in british bright/sharp amps, like Laneys and Marshalls (for my ears, of course)
I guess your les paul is maple neck, so don't be worried about alnico models sounding dark or something (well they didn't sound dark in my mahogany neck les pauls)
I wouldn't even discard the warpig as a great replacement for the duncan distortion
it's grainy and big sounding, but much clearer than the sh-6

I cannot even begin to describe how much I love the fact that I actually receive multiple educated, informed answers. This can't be real...  Anybody seen the Aged Gold pu covers?

One more question about the Cold Sweats.... Are they an overly bright pickup? I forgot to mention I have a natural aversion to tons of treble bite i guess.

One more question about the Cold Sweats.... Are they an overly bright pickup? I forgot to mention I have a natural aversion to tons of treble bite i guess.

I guess this will depend mostly on your guitar and how it sounds unplugged - BKPs are famous for being very sensitive to the host guitar's true sound (as well as to height adjustment but that's not the point here). I can't tell about the CS - never tried it myself - but given that vintage BKP Tele bridges (possibly the most canonically "overly bright" pup you could think of) manage to avoid the usual ice-pick syndrom, I can't imagine how any BKP 'bucker could be _overly_ bright by itself

Now the CS description explicitely mentions "Screaming highs" and "incredible amounts of high end cut", so if you're looking for a dark sound, this might not be the one for you... But remember that while you can always filter trebles (at worse using a higher value tone cap) off a bright pup, you will never be able to add more hi ends to a dark pup...

Anyway: if in doubt, AskTim(tm)  8)

My 2 cents...

the cold sweat surely is very bright
that's why I love it in almost every amp, except my JMP 2204
it is sizzly and not really BIG sounding
it's bright, sharp and crunchy
not thin at all, but I'd never say it's a fat sounding pickup, after having about 10 other bridge pickups in that same guitar
one my favorite bridge pickups, but after reading everything you posted here again, I'm not sure if fits what you're supposedly looking for

According to the Seymour Duncan website Tone Chart... the Duncan Distortion has an EQ of 5(bass), 8(mid), and 9(treble) a D.C. Resistance of 16.6 and ceramic magnet. I like the tightness of the bass response. I do not like the high end sizzle. I would like to find, if possible, a pickup that has a bigger more open sound, more chime on the high end rather than sizzle, same tight bass response(if possible with the open sound), lots of clarity/ note definition in mid to high gain. This is hard because I don't really have a way to tell the "EQ" on each of the BK pickups. I would like to keep the output somewhat close to the DD. I am not partial to ceramic magnets,  thus, if there is an alnico V magnet pickup that can match bass response of the ceramic(realizing the bass response is due the eq and magnet), I would happily go for it.I run the jcm 800 with the gain at about 7 with various tube screamer type pedal in front of it using mostly just the level and little to no gain for a cleaner boost. Not a ton of gain but the DD pushes it well.
