Title: Metal pickup for ACRYLIC guitar - Nailbomb or Warpig? Or active pickups?
Post by: ZiggyK on February 16, 2010, 05:15:11 PM
2 parts to this question concerning pickups to buy, mostly for rhythm playing and probably a pair.

1. Can anyone reccomend a pickup that may work particularly well with the tonal qualities (or lack of) of an acrylic guitar?I have an Acrylic BC RICH mockingbird that I want to set up as my 'metal' guitar. I'm using Dimebag Darrell DR strings 50-9. I'm thinking either the Warpig or Nailbomb since the audio examples for those match the sound I want, but which would match an acrylic guitar best?

2. Live I use a POD XT LIVE. Does this mean that active pickups will be better for me to cancel hum?

Regarding the sound I'm aiming for...
I want a nice warm, punchy metal sound with lots of harmonics and low end. My band plays hard rock originals in standard E and often Drop D tunings (but no lower). Think Soundgarden, RATM, Metallica, and tight enough for something like Slipknot or Pantera, as very general reference points for sound and style. I plan to balance that sound on recordings with a vintage strat single coil sound.

My guess for pickups is the Bare Knuckles Warpig or Nailbomb pickups. Both sound great on the audio examples I've found on this forum. But which is better for an acrylic guitar and my sound!?!

I'm also considering the Seymour Duncan Blackouts AHB1 or AHB2 (sound a bit lifeless and lacking harmonics on the audio examples tho), the Livewire Metal (sounds great on the audio sample, but tough enough on high gain?).

Any help much appreciated. Many thanks!!

I heard that Acryl sounds similiar to mahagony (correct me if I am wrong) so for the styles you play I would pick a Miracle Man set!

I've got an acrylic guitar, it weighs a ton, but the core tone from acrylic is shockingly good. It's a little forward in the mid range, but the rest of the spectrum is most assuredly there. When you consider that Keith Richards and Bill Wyman used Armstrong acrylic guitars. And David Grolsch's no 1 guitar is a similar model. Nile Rogers played a plexi Strat during his main years. These people can afford anything. Acrylic works.

I can't advise you pup-wise, but I suspect that almost anything would work with the generous tone this material gives you. Just pick your model and be happy.

acrylic guitar? pod xt? blackouts?

TONE?   :?

Fair point? I can't really comment on the acrylic since the BC RICH factory pickups are so run of the mill. The POD XT is a necessary evil since I can't afford a car to get my marshall valve amp to rehearsals, or an expensive rack system for quick shiny effects changes. As for the blackouts, you'll be unsurprised to hear that the seymour duncan mods reccomend those.

Tone is hard. Maybe I'll just get a mexican strat copy and form a punk band

Or get a telecaster and be even more valid a target for abuse and ridicule...

Good luck with the Miracle Man - I love that pickup!

Oh, and pics and clips afterwards or it didn't happen ;)
