Hey guys,
Ive got the chance to get a guitar ive been gassing for for ages, but in trade the dude wants a guitar i got a few years back that i had been gassing over for ages.
I have a silverburst gibson SG, trading for a 20th Ann RG550 in Desert Yellow
Both are hard to value due to limited availability.
you reckon its a fair trade.
i hardly use the SG anymore so im leaning towards trading for something new
my other option is try and trade it for cash

Edit:So I made a decision and have a new guitar day, first for a while.
See page 4 for more

I'd say keep the SG, but then I like SGs and have no interest at all in RGs.
The SG does look great in silverburst, and once you've sold it you probably won't see another. On the other hand I think those RGs were only produced in small numbers too, weren't they?
-
Depending on condition, and if it's been messed with or not, the RG550 is worth around £650.
I would say your SG is worth more than that...
-
i agree with Dave, i'd say the SG is worth quite a bit more than the Ibanez.

I so want that SG!
Keep the SG!

If you do trade it I'd ask for some cash from him

Three hours after seeing this thread, I now have bad GAS for an SG silverburst. :|
-
I hate SGs. With a passion. Ask for cash because your guitar is worth more, but do the trade. When the magic is gone, you can't do much. I owned an SG for the better part of my life and thought it was great. Then I realized it didn't do anything for me. I sold it and bought a seven string + my 6er's Warpigs. I'm much happier for it.

are you sure its not GAS for a Desert Yellow RG?

The Roobubba of SGs?

Let me examine my feelings for a moment.............................
..................no, on reflection, I'm 1,000,000% certain it's not GAS for a Desert Yellow RG.

The Roobubba of SGs?
No, Philly, that's far too composed a 'hatred'. I don't see any of my own all-consuming telecaster rage behind those words ;) God I hate telecasters almost as much as I hate Macca, the Beatles and traffic wardens. Mashed potatoes are evil, but really do pale in comparison to the above monstrosities. :/
Damn you Philly, you got me started again!
I never got on with the SGs I tried (neck heavy... wtf?), but preferred them to the les pauls - I couldn't get on with this bridge floating about 14 inches from my body. I do, however, love the look of SGs - and the Viper's take on the symmetric SG shape is really good. Of course, my design with Wez far exceeds either of these 'generic' models :D

I lit the Roo touchpaper, then stood well back.

Need to calm down with some nice Cancer Bats or Meshuggah methinks...

I'm with Philly and the others on this one. Keep the SG! But why would anyone want a RG???

What Phill said.

Because they don't neck dive, their headstocks aren't liable to fall off, they have comfortable neck profiles, hold tuning well (even with a floyd), and the stock pickups aren't utterly terrible.
But of course, most of that can be fixed on any guitar.
And speaking personally, I wouldn't fancy standing up on stage with a bright lime green guitar of any description. Although I'd rather that than a pink jizzmaster, for example...
-
I'd absolutely keep the SG!
-
I don't usually like silver burst, but that SG looks stunning...
That fluorescent lime green thing, on the other hand... hmmm... :|
Yep, personally, I'd keep the SG out of those two.
But, putting myself in your shoes, if there was a rare thing I'd been lusting over, and suddenly the opportunity arose... then I would be looking at options for obtaining it... and if the SG has served its purpose for you, why not?
Beware though - we see a lot of "I used to have X, I sold it on, wish I hadn't..." on the old interweb . I don't tend to view stuff like that myself, I rarely part with guitars anyway, but if I do I tend to make the decision with a "remember you're making the decision, no-one else" attitude. So far it's worked, even if I do miss something, there never seems to be any big feeling of "why-oh-why did I do that?"
-
Not helping my plans, but at the same time supporting my deep down feelings
Dont really want to get rid of the SG, but i've used it once in the last year, the only band i play in now requires a floyd
Im in an 80s metal band so the yellow is a positive aspect
also got SG stuff sorta covered with a jackson scott ian, which i dont use anyway
but also got an RG550 already from 91, but its boring old lazer blue
maybe i should just try and keep the SG and buy the RG outright
both are basically as new condition.and both are similar rarity i think, sg slightly more so than the RG
-
you could just get your current rg550 refinished it would probably work out cheaper all round.
-
Its just not the same, doesnt fulfill the GAS
also the neck on the newer model has a nicer finish on the back and better frets than my old one, and also 5 piece so will be sturdier
and i dont want to be a Desert Yellow phony, i think thats a hanging offence in desert countries

Yep, I think that's what I'd be trying to do... depending on funds, other half, storage-space, etc, etc
-
Sell the current RG and use it to find a new one?
-
I wouldn't trade, that SG has got to be rare in that colour - would love a silverburst LP as it happens.
I don't like the Ibanez at all, so I'm biased on this one.

Keep it!
-
It's a no from me! The SG is cool and will always be cool.
-
That silver burst SG would go great with my Silverburst Les Paul
-
I would keep this nice and great looking SG but when it's not your cup of tea anymore, would trade with extra cash coming in. Personally I left Ibbies a long time ago. I had a Jem 77 FP, but it didn't do much to me anymore as I changed musicstyle. I became a tele-freak. A tele with BG50's into a cranked Rockerverb 50 head is wicked. Much more snap on the bass and lower mids than the Ibbie could provide. A lot more expression and character. But, the Tele has no whammybar. I don't miss it, some need it.

Thread revival - with an update.
So nearly all of you told me not to do it, but I couldnt resist, so it is NGD for me
Basically new condition RG550 20th anniversary in Desert Yellow
Sorry, im rubbish at nice looking photos, but anyway....

Still need to get it set up properly, and will probably change the bridge pcikup out soon, thinking maybe a Miracle Man? Any opinions on these in RGs?
But all you guys that told me not to trade, dont worry
(http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee282/muzz989/DSC04329.jpg)
Still got it
And while ive got the camera out may as well take a superstrat family shot

Glad to hear that you got the guitar you wanted and relifed that you didn't trade in the SG :D
-
I think you did the right thing. I am another florescent 80's guitar nut, as well as a lover of the maple RG's. Promise me you will never weaken and get it re-finished :)
The 550 is one of the most sought after of the whole Ibanez brand and that one looks fantastic. It also looks like the re-issue with the original edge. The only cooler Ibanezs are the original 777's and the BFP.
I would change the pickups immediately though.
Also I have a very similar chest of drawers as the one in your picture. Excelsior to you, sir!
-
Even an Ibanez lover myself, I wouldn't've traded the SG. I would've just gone for the extra costs.
I am proud of you!
-
Glad to see you kept the SG. :D
I hope to find one of those on eBay, one day!
-
Nice one :D
Happy endings all round...

Great taste,man!!
-
That's a "...and they all lived happily ever after" ending if ever I heard one. Joy abounds. I like both the RG and the SG.
-
Good for you, nice set of guitars too! Enjoy. 8)
-
Great Guitar! "The force is strong with this one"
Here is a pic of my "Tribute RG350" with Trilogy middle but awaiting PINK Holy Diver set...
-
OUF :D! At least you kept ONE proper guitar :) Well done !Enjoy... 8)
-
I dont like SGs and do like RGs
I would sell the SG and buy an old school RG550/60/70 for ~£300 and keep the change.
-
Ah, too late.
-
ha yeah, too late, did you not get through the thread
but yeah already have a 91 RG, been my main guitar for the last year or so, so thought id splash out and buy a more yellow newer version of exactly the same thing.
the old one actually has a fair bit more weight to it, but the neck on the 20th anniversary model is amazing. need to sort out some new pickups and then will be ready to rock it out properly
think i still probably should get rid of a guitar or 2, cant really justify 7, but i find it so hard to bring myslef to sell guitars
-
To answer your question, yes, put a miracle man in it. Perfect. :)
-
I like a lot the SG, but this Chernobyl-Yellow Ibby = bleh
-
on a stage at a big gig - the ibby would look loads better. on a stand in my house it would have to be the SG
