Hmmm, odd indeed. I'm not a V lover though so things like this won't bother me as much as some of you V lovers.
Is that a coin stuck the top? Also, it's not too clear from the picture but it looks like the bottom three strings have been strung over the bridge and the top three through it.

white gibson 80s rear routed V, modified into a Rhoads :/

its a rare limited edition medallion V from 71/72, the 'coin' is meant to be there.. but the 3rd pickup.. ergh
-
some others must have seen horribly modified guitars - post away please!
-
Ah, cheers. Thought it was a bit of an odd feature (the coin).

gibson did a firebird medallion special edition too.
a couple of rock stars played medallion Vs.
(also, speed knobs on a V... no!)
-
those medallion Vs are pretty darn rare!

I bet I could make a few more out of Ed Roman's spare parts stock.

Why would you do that?
It hasn't got 24 frets, so must be shite :?

(in fact the cases of these medallion Vs and firebirds have a medallion on them too.. alot of people use them to make fakes.
in the case of the V, you can tell a fake very quickly by looking at the construction of the heel)
getting ready for that lottery win as you can see..

I don't think it's too terrible, to be honest. The speed knobs are an eyesore, but easy to change, and it's easy to get a new (or even vintage) scratchplate and change it back to two pickups. Ok, so there's a bit of wood routed out under the plate.
It's only a "Rare Valuable Vintage Medallion Flying V" with the benefit of hindsight. The owner might've added that third pickup in 1974. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a new Gibson and modify it.... and I don't think you would either.
-
If they wanted a Rhoads why didn't they just.. oh I don't know, buy one?

i like the pragmatism in your reply philly

Look at it another way - that hole gouged under the plate will also gouge a chunk out of the value. Which guarantees it'll be much cheaper than a pristine one when you're ready to buy it. :P

but what if that bit of wood that is cut out is the exact spot where "the mojo" lives and it just got amputated.

i'll trim the wings and make it a King V in that case

Or trim the wings and make a bonfire :)
