Title: tele advice?
Post by: brian_ward on January 10, 2011, 05:33:56 PM
im looking at either the american special or the classic players baja tele. i have played an american special and i liked it but the frets seemed a little big. the fit and finish was excellent though. action was low enough and was realitively buzz free. im more interested because of the features the classic players baja tele boasts. the s1 switching, the larger neck and the smaller more tele-like frets are all cool and i would like to have them. my concern is that im unable to play the baja because none of the local stores carry them and am leary of the consistency of the instruments coming out of mexico.  anyone have advice?

brian.

Baja's are excellent and the quality of the Mexican Fender factory is very good for factory made guitars.

+1 great guitars and every one I have played was good.  As far as buying a guitar without playing it goes I would say the Baja's are relatively low risk.

Most definitely a +1 on the Baja from me. I have tried a few and they have all been good - the one I got is pretty resonant acoustically and sounds great with BG flat 50s.

If you do get one I'd recommend those pups - as would many on the forum.

cool. i talked to the guy at gc today and he said i could order the baja and play it and if i like the american standard more i could just exchange it. whichever i end up with is definitely getting the newly revamped flat 50s or possibly the boss. thats a whole separate issue though. thanks.

My advice is don't get a tele.

But you won't heed it. I mean, you obviously don't realise now that they look sh!t and they make their player look sh!t, so you'll probably never realise this!

Shame.

Sorry, I got as far as the 'BEATLES' (seriously, dude, take your caps lock key and throw it in the bin), then could read no more of your post.

As for:
Quote
You can go with you standard one's and with a pup change, caps and add a 4 way switch and you can go from COUNTRY to THRASH METAL with the flck of a switch

Whether or not this is true, you'll still look like a total tw@t, because you're wearing a tele. End of story.

The only thing you could have said to make your argument even worse would be something like: 'Even traffic wardens love the look of the telecaster'.

Yeah, I think I do have tele Tourette's. :)

.......your life is empty and you prefer to spend more time talking about playing guitar rather trhan practicing so MAYBE one day someone will hire you to play for them.

Nah, that's me.

Don't mind Roo, it's just his way.... he has a pathological hatred of Teles.  You have to get used to him.

So you're not a TELE man....let me guess a STRAT player....HOW ORIGINAL!!!

he plays a quite unique fanned fret custom build.

anyway, the whole Roo vs Telecaster thing is kind of a forum running joke. we all know hes a big tele loving paul macartney fan really.

i enjoyed reading your rant though - Roo had it coming to him

nice guitars there mate

Yes - don't take any of Roo's comments personally.  We all know he owns a pink paisley Telecaster.

I'm genuinely sorry to hear you've a tumour in your left eye and have heart problems. I am a cancer research scientist, and am committed to finding treatments for all types of this truly horrible illness.

But my 'caps lock' plea was not for your benefit, but for the benefit of readers of your posts! It's genuinely really difficult to read with upper case words all over the place - as though you're SHOUTING every other WORD... Kind of makes you sound like a lunatic! By the way, this has nothing to do with either grammar or spelling (neither of which I passed comment on, by the way - and normally I might).

I don't actually look at post count. Welcome to the forums :)

(PS I don't mind strats, LPs, SGs, most guitar shapes, in fact, though I have no need of any of these. Just hate the tele shape with a vengeance. I have never - in caps, NEVER - seen a picture or video or player in real life playing one who didn't look like a tw@t, so don't take it personally :))

For the record, I do not live in a yellow submarine, and while I don't mind frogs, I think it's pointless to sing to them, unless they're particularly sad. And if that were the case, I'm sure they'd prefer some nice meshuggah.

hatew to say it but my wife knows the value of each piece and was looking at Vintage guitar last night to see what their values are today

but no claims in the white 61 vette I just posted a pic of!!!! The 48 harley was just sold.

But I am sure you will be very happy with the amps that are left or since you too enjoy a tele nown then you can ask her about them but the 56 gets burried with me since it was my first but that 71 Custom and 72 DELUXE are heaven !!!!

PURE heaven !!!!

St james

The amps and the car will do I suppose.

In the mean time to you have many more pictures of the Tele's, I for one would like to see more Tele action! I'm sure Roo secretly does as well. I suspect he has pictures of Telecasters on his pyjamas.

SHOOBUT,That CUSTOM SHOP 52 HOT ROD is sweet........is it a 1 piece body>>>?????

St James

The nocaster is a very light 2 piece body just under 6lbs with the strap according to my scales. I love the neck on it as well, it's huge. I think I could beat someone to death with it.

She's real purdy and spanks like a professional dominatrix!

Anyway - back to the OP - Brian I should just point out, that if you want aftermarket pickups that work with the S1 you should ask the manufacturer (such as Tim) to make it S1 compatible - it needs an extra wire from the neck pickup.

I think the Baja is the bang for the bucks. Throw in BG50's or '52's and, big authentic tele-tone, which is an absolutely unique tone. Amen!

I've just come back from rehearsal having used my Fender CS Esquire for the first time in ages.

It rocked a proper good one, and I'd forgotten what a superb guitar it is.  I'm rapidly coming to the conclusion that the Tele is the best guitar ever, no matter what Roo says!

I'm interested to see that the Baja Tele is getting lots of love but no-one's mentioned the Road Worn.  I ahven't tried either but I had assumed (probably wrongly) that they would be quite similar.  Have I missed something?

As far as me looking like a TW&&&&t.....maybe I did on the 8 ALBUMS I did with my band and 7 others I played on,
I'm sure on the 5 WORLD TOURS made me look foolish too and of course the 50 plus USA and CANADIAN tours I have been on made me look real foolish and especially when I go to the bank I look real foolish...
I'm 55 retired, have 16 MC,  4 corvettes, drivce a BENZ and have 36 Guitars... and a Condo in NYC and one in LA.....yeah I look real foolish....

St James,

Sorry to hear about your illness, I'm sure all will go well on Friday and we'll be thinking of ya!

Interested to hear what albums you have played on and also if you have any youtube clips of you back in the day, that would be nice to see.

Nice Corvette as well!

BTW, Teles should only ever have a 3-way switch, the 4-way mod should be baned :D

The Road Worn is a nice tele, but more expensive then the Baja. If money was no issue, I would favour the Road Worn, but the Baja is great for the price and you save some money to upgrade with BKP's.

I've got a Road Worn Deluxe, so not a direct comparison, but with the relic finish it feels very different from the thick glossy finish on the Baja.   I guess the underlying guitar is probably pretty similar though.

You're absolutely right. I would favour the RW, just when the budget is small, a used Baja is a nice alternative.

+1 to all this.

I've played a couple of RW 50s. Both were fantastic guitars, "better" than my Baja at doing roughly the same job. But I'm kind of committed to my Baja, so both times I couldn't justify yet another tele to do the same job...

If I was starting over, and had the budget, I would choose all the RW 50s I've played over all the Bajas I've played. But I'm still not parting with my Baja!

I've noticed the RW 50s can be a bit patchy over looks - this'll be personal taste though - of the two I've played, one looked stunning to me, and one looked "ok it's acceptable". I've since seen one that looked "er, no thanks" and I wouldn't even get it off the wall to try (even though the missus suggested I did, knowing what that might result in if I liked it )

St James - good luck with the op. I like reading your posts :D

Thanks TWIN FAN....I gotta tear one apart to look at it.
I love screwing around with electronics....I started out in the early 70's after Namn working as a Guitar Tech for the
NEW YORK DOLLS
Did you know John & Lisa Frazie (they used to live on 2nd ave between 29th & 30th)?  They used to hang out with the dolls in the 70's.  Lisa's ex-husband used to have an old fur loft next to Johnny Thunder in the west 30's.  It still had the old safe door in it.  This was back in the early 80's.

I'm the Hoboken BK guy (or one of them - I'm not sure if anyone else on the forum lives here).

I hope your surgery goes well.

I'm not trying to be funny or difficult here, but you don't hit caps to see, you hit caps for emphasis. Unfortunately, it makes it very difficult to actually read: as a reader, your eyes flit between the upper case words and skip all the rest in between. That, coupled with the feeling of being shouted at every other word, is why we're all bitching about it! :)

Ray Barbeiri (think i spelled that right) aka RayBeez sang in WarZone.
They formed in 82 i think. maybe 84. Ray sang for agnostic front before warzone.

They were skinhead hardcore punk kids. Warzone lasted 15 years I think.
