I'm a dork so I like to look at the stars and have a good bit invested my telescopes and eyepieces. Right now my best is a big ass Zhumell with a 10" aperture, it's about 4 feet long. I can see color and detail in Saturn when it's out. :D
What other hobbies do you guys like to indulge in when guitars and music get you feeling too single-minded?
-
For me it's swimming, running, football and physics
-
Martial arts, reading (especially esoterica and related topics) and tabletop roleplaying!
-
Nice light bucket :D
I had a telescope and really liked looking at the planets. I even did sketches of Venus for a while.
But as somebody who just wanted a quick look now and again I never got on with trying to remember how to set up the EQ mount and just gave up. When funds and space permit I'll get a Dob and get into it again.
It's such an awe inspiring thing to do though. As long as you don't get telescope GAS!
I like photography which is a nice quiet hobby to balance against the noise of loud guitar but ultimately most of my non-guitar playing hobbies are guitar related. Like choosing, setting up, tweaking, polishing, messing etc
I guess running and keeping fit are also hobbies.
Don't worry about being a dork though, don't forget Brian May made it cool
-
Martial arts, reading (especially esoterica and related topics) and tabletop roleplaying!
I like looking at erotica too, you're in good company round here I'm sure :D
-
My main hobby instrument is only about a foot long so it can be quite disappointing when I'm trying to look at Uranus. Thankfully I do have quite a large aperture, so that's some compensation... :?
-
Does this count? Making electronic music on the pc? And: long walks with my bordercollie, reading literature, testing wines and discuss the quality, have dinner in town, visit concerts, watch good movies etc etc.
-

I think you need a filter.

i played about 15 games of football last month, and i frequent the gym.. The guitar does seem to come in #2 to these hobbies currently.

Single malt whisky.

Yep - Dave can be relied on to suggest Onanism!
My hobby is vintage Formula 1 , photography and making guitars
-
My time is spent on reading- mainly history and nature and at the moment, trying to get my health back.
-
Ditto martial arts, specifically Wing Chun.
Think we've been here before, haven't we?!?!
I'd love to get in to stargazing, although the thought of Daves foot-long instrument does intimidate me somewhat... How woud I fair with Uranus using a paultry 5" tool? Would it be worth my while..?
-
Cycling, both mountain bike and road. I actually ride the road bike more often now! Biking has definitely overtaken guitar as a hobby for me now. I just don't get much pleasure from playing guitar for any longer than half an hour any more :(

Weightlifting ( as in off the floor and over the head, NOT 'Bodybuilding' as such ). Any / all of the fun you can have with an Olympic bar and plates - along with working on Kettlebell skills and strength endurance / Explosive power training.
Add in carrying stuff for time and/or distance - and just the joy of being active and feeling 'vigorous'.
Like 'Spitfire' said a little earlier in the thread though, these things ( as you tend to train them everyday - at intervals throughout the day ) - tend to push My beloved Jazz Guitar into second place somewhat.
It feels like a great balance between the celebreal and visceral though - and I see that many other people on here like a similar contrast between the two ( apparent ) extremes, including our 'Founding Father' Tim of course.
To me, there is however ,a very strong common thread between Weightlifting ( as my named 'Sport' ) and music / creativity - in that they are both based on the enjoyment of aquiring good technique and skills . In both arenas, I have also gone right back to re-addressing the basics I feel to have neglected for many years - in a past effort to appear the part - as opposed to truly being the part.
I am reminded that even Miyamoto Musashi ( In the 'Book Of Five Rings' ) recommended ( roughly translated into modern terms )
" If you want to learn a Martial Art, first learn the guitar ". :)

For a long time I wanted other hobbies. I just find it really hard to find things to interest me for any long period of time.
It's this negative attitude that creeps up on me. However...
I have started having a couple of lessons to improve my lead playing (self taught for so long kind of means I stopped progressing a while back... but after 2 lessons I've noticed a leap forward in how I think about rhythm, lead, general counterpoint)
I'm also into building amplifiers, although I don't know as much as some of the guys here... I keep that ticking over.
If valve electronics counts as something separate.
I work 10 or 10.5 hour shifts. It's surprising how much stuff mounts up when you work long hours that just eats into your leisure time.
Doing hobbies like martial arts and such in london is stuff I've tried but it just costs too much. I don't even know how long I'll keep up the guitar lessons due to expense.
-
Watching films and reading books, that's about it.
I don't play sport - never been any good at anything - but I'm currently trying hard to get fitter and lose some weight because I've recently been diagnosed with diabetes. :(
(The losing weight bit is easy enough, since I'm now terrified of eating most of the food I've liked all my life)
-

I'm genuinely sorry to hear about the Diabetes Philly; but at least with a diagnosis in place , I trust the correct management of it will continue to give you a high quality of life. Now you have an added incentive to also look after your Cardio-Vascular ( and general ) health - I also hope this is the turning point for a much healthier and longer life in general.

LOL!
Post of the month!
I put on festivals (for no money, so it's a hobby by my reckoning) and learn stuff, which is the finest hobby one can indulge in I reckon, the acquiring of new knowledge, as pretentious as it sounds
Bit rubbish getting diagnosed with diabetes, Philly, but I've quite a few pals with either type one or type two and they all get along fine, if perhaps rueing those once enjoyed vodka and red bulls.
-

I'm genuinely sorry to hear about the Diabetes diagnosis Philly; but at least with a diagnosis in place , I trust the correct management of it will continue to give you a high quality of life, and plenty of it !
Thanks Derek, and I hope so!
I'm getting over the initial panic that every time my blood sugar goes up a bit it's another nail in my (soon-to-be-required) coffin  , but still spending all day every day fretting about what I can eat and when. Hopefully that'll pass too.
I do have a few friends and relatives with diabetes, none of whom have suffered major complications so far (touch wood). Being a natural pessimist, I still fear the worst.... but I think I was diagnosed pretty early, and I'm already learning a lot, so hopefully the "management" side can become routine and I can just get on with life.

I'm really sorry to hear of your diagnosis for diabetes, Philly. I assume it's type 2, and I'm guessing you're on a diet treatment for starters, or are you straight onto insulin?
I spent a while helping my wife with some audio-typing, the client was a professor making an oral history of diabetes. You can find the transcripts and recordings here: http://www.diabetes-stories.com/index.asp My wife and I did all of the transcription on that website. It's a LOT of hours of audio!
Beware - this is not particularly light-hearted stuff. Historically, there were a lot of things wrong with the treatment of diabetes, and a lot of different ways of thinking about it over the years. I hope you find this reading interesting and useful, but don't get down-hearted reading it. Despite some of the horror stories in there, there are some fantastic stories of people living totally normal lives with diabetes for more (in some cases WAY more) than the 'average lifetime' at a time when clinical diabetes management left a lot to be desired.
re: non-guitar-related hobbies (now that the audio typing is over): playing piano, computer gaming (first person shooters mainly), photography, cooking, wine, and LoveFilm.
When I have time.
I have a 4.5-5h commuting day 3 times a week and 3-3.5h the other 2 days, so it doesn't leave a whole lot of spare time.

If it's of any consolation Philly, A guy I used to gig with had a lifelong Diabetic condition - and once correctly managed, had more energy and health than most other people in our social circle at the time. There have also been some notable athletes and Bodybuilders with Diabetes - for whom the same could be said. The crafty devils even started to 'get the edge' by manipulating insulin spikes ! In the words of a nice moto I once saw :
" Don't fear the future - create it ". :)
-
Sorry to hear that Philly. I hope with the right medication/eatingschedule, everything gets in it's place again and you're feeling better.
-
Sorry to hear about the diabetes mate. :(
Are you on Metformin or just a controlled diet?
Don't worry dude there are many fine examples of people "rockin'" with diabetes.... Errrr...
-
Ah, sorry to hear that Philly but as the others here have said, there is a lot than can be done to manage the condition and indeed some people I know manage extremely well.I have had a fear lately of being in a similar position though my issues apparently are due to that classic all embracing term "its a virus".

Thanks for the comments guys.
Yes, it's type 2 and no insulin, the doctor has put me on half a tablet of Metformin after each meal to begin with but I'm hoping I can manage it with diet and exercise in due course - we'll see. I don't particularly like my GP but he seems to encourage patients to do what they can to improve their own conditions, rather than just throwing medication at them.
Perhaps in some ways I can actually improve my health by losing weight, lowering my blood pressure, lowering cholesterol etc (I hope that's not just self-delusion...)
Thanks, Roo, for the link - I've just read a few of the transcripts. It looks like a massive resource, but I think for now I need to treat it with caution. I've read a lot in the last few weeks and although much of it's encouraging the "horror stories" are still enough to put me in a bit of a state. :|
Hmmm, I seem to have hijacked the thread....

mines Meditation, don't normally use capitals but this word is an exception.it's first function is to help to find peace of mind but it goes way beyond.
sorry to here your story philly, my 'hobby' could benefit you in many ways.
anyone interested in Meditation can do a free course at 'dhamma dipa' in herefordshire. dhamma.org for worldwide
course details.
it's a no-nonsense approach from a no nonsense organisation so no scamming etc.

Well that's just bad English.

I was took Okinawan white swan for 6 years during and a bit after high school. It was very much like playing the guitar in that you have to get very comfortable in moving ways you are not used to. Fluid motion, a good mental state and muscle control are very important in both.
PhillyQ, diabetes can really suck man. My girlfriend's father had 2 surgeries on one of his eyeballs last year to try and save it and he's now blind in that one. You have to take that medication, whatever it is. He didn't keep up with it regularly and that's what he got. There's only a handful of people in my life with diabetes and they all have feet problems because of that blood flow problem. You have to stay on top of that as well. Seems you can be extra susceptible to foot fungus, so even if you don't have any now, a twice weekly application of an over the counter creme will keep you away from that at least. Seems a great deal of feeling can be lost in the feet, so you gotta check your shoes for pebbles. I know two people who have been close to losing a foot or toe that way. They ground the rock into their flesh over a number of days and it's hard for the foot to recover from that with the illness.
It sucks that you have to make some changes to get along, but just stay on top of it, man. You'll be fine. :D

I'm curious about Meditation. One of the things I have struggled with most of my life is a very poor attention span. For instance I'll sit in meetings and realise that my mind has been drifting and I've completely lost the thread of what is being discussed - can be a little embarrassing when people ask for my input!
I really want to change this as I have just moved jobs and really want to do well and not stuff it up. Is Meditation something that can help with improving concentration/focus?
-
I lift but am still very much a beginner, like Derek I'm interested in functional strength not aesthetics. If someone had told me I'd become a barbell addict a few years ago, I'd have though they were nuts :? Like many others, I've been on a diet (unfortunately not compatible with strength training) over the last year. I'm doing well, lost over 6 stone so far!
I love films and watch way too much TV. IMO we live in a golden ago of TV. Don't get me wrong, there's a serious amount of cr*p on the TV but the quality stuff over the last 10 years or so (OZ, Battlestar, West Wing, Sopranos, The Wire, etc.) in some of the best TV ever made. Shame others can't come up to HBOs standards.
Sorry to hear about the diabetes Philly :( My Dad and one of my older brothers are both type-1, so I know it can be tough. My Dad lost most of the sight in one eye a couple of years ago.
-
I used to be a historian full time - i.e. I taught it at university - but I left because I got fed up with the nepotism of academia as well as the fact that being a university lecturer is equivalent to a contract for slavery. However, I am still researching and writing and am trying to finish my first full monograph - still with a proper job its taking years and years and years :(
I also learn languages - so far I have taught myself passable French and am currently cracking away at German.

Absolutely. Meditation can bring a clarity and focus when oh I've got a couple of kettlebells too... what? Who's diabetic?
-
Ian Price, meditation can help with focus and concentration which are both essential in it's practice.in your meetings
when you notice your mind has drifted you have become aware of the present again. becoming aware of the present reality (not being lost in your thoughts & dreams) constantly or 'mindfulness' is the start of meditation.
this is more difficult in boring meetings and pretty easy in a gig or something interesting.
like you i suffer with weak attention but it's not the only reason to practice.
-
Got to admit I can't trust meditation if it will stop me daydreaming.
Daydreaming is the only think that gets me through meetings. It's my last refuge for the working day.
It got me through school and college god damn it and now it gets me through work and talking to the missus!
Sitting through a wedding planning session with a high state of consciousness could be very difficult :?
-
I've been on a diet (unfortunately not compatible with strength training) over the last year. I'm doing well, lost over 6 stone so far!
That is an absolutely amazing amount of body re-compositioning you've done there Ken ! :D
I also wanted to mention that to not feel it wholly compatible with strength training is somewhat harsh on yourself. I am just thinking how your absolute strength may have leveled or taken a drop, but of course your relative strength ( power to weight ratio ) is no doubt meanwhile progressing very well .
A further thought ( and one I've decided to heed myself for the next few months ) is that given by a major contributor to a well known Kettlebell / Strength forum. When asked what order he ( as a personal trainer ) would place seemingly mixed objectives such as strength , fat loss , adding lean mass ( and / or specific strength qualities required for Sports ) he noted that he got the best results for his clients if he started with fat loss ( whilst pursuing a maintainence strength routine ) - then work on increasing the base strength level with an appropriate routine - and only then, working on what the client would like to ultimately acheive some months later. Another famous Strength / Field Athletics coach described it as working seemingly 'counter intuitive' to what most Gym goers would do between Winter and Summer. He would do his fat loss in winter / spring ( whilst most where getting big and heavy in the Gym ) - then start adding in the strength stuff, so that he'd already been in great condition for months - and so just needed to add some 'new' Strength at leisure near the start of the new Athletics season. This meant of course, that whilst most were draining themselves of much needed energy in a last minute effort to catch up with the long overdue fat loss and general conditioning phase , he was enjoying the very managable and relatively simple act of doing sets of 2 - 5 reps with large rest periods - and enjoying carrying stuff around / having functional fun outside in the increasingly pleasant weather.
I mention all that, because I not only think you've done something most admirable already , but are also ' bang on target' for an enviable power to weight ratio in the future. Sort of giving the car a smaller body, before you fit the 3 litre engine. Yours is an inspiring story indeed ! :D
-
My main hobby right now seems to be going out and drinking far too much.
After last time I did wonder if I count as an alcoholic.
-
Too bad Philly, my younger brother has been just diagnosed with it, my mother has it for some years and I've high value of sugar on my blood for like 5 years... May start paying attention someday :?
-
Hi Philly, just want to add my condolences. I have a couple of friends with it and they seem OK. I can imagine that it sucks to have to cut out a lot of the food you like, but if you get it under control, I think you will probably be able to eat some of them in moderation.
My outside music hobbies are bicycling (both road & mountain), and reading. With my hectic job schedule I haven't had time for my other one in a few years, but I used to do a lot of skiing.
-
Thanks for the kind words Derek, I need them
I totally agree that a weight loss programme combined with a maintenance lifting routine works best until I have lost more weight. It's just that maintenance lifting can be frustrating due to the lack of progress :? I'll often drop the 5×5 lift for a few weeks and just do complexes instead.
-
Ditto martial arts, specifically Wing Chun.
I've always been interested in Wing Chun. But, alas it was not to be. I have been doing Krav Maga for about 5 years now. I am also heavily involved with power lifting.
I also collect firearms and cutlery, which goes well with my hefty liquer cabinet.
I agree about the functional strangth versus bodybuilding for looks.
I mostly work olimpic lifts, kettlebells, macebells and hammers.
-
This topic is actually 3 rolled into one. Fabulous! :)

Hobbies:
Cycling, which includes lots of dicking about online buying retro bits and so on. Doing L'Eroica this year, so better start training. I also make 8bit music, which combined with a job, guitaring, and hanging out takes up all of my time.
Philly Q:
Am sorry to hear about your diabetes, its certainly worrying, but seems to be a relatively understood condition these days. I sympathise though, its not nice to have alot of favourites cut out and losing your freedoms.
Meditation:
I've often considered trying it out, but I honestly have no time. I thought it might affect my guitar playing in a positive way (a la Uli Jon Roth), however I quite like living impulsively currently.
Martial arts:
Not keen
Weight lifting:
No
Weight loss:
I'm suddenly putting on weight over the last year. I wonder if it relates to my cycle training, I certainly eat alot more as a result. Am also drinking very heavily these last months. I may need to look at this at some point.
-
There seems to be a slight trend here, and i'm included: cycling, losing weight (6lbs so far this year! eating much healthier-- not that I was Ronald McDonald before, just having proper portioned meals now, and visiting the swimming pool/gym), no martial arts here, but trying to re-learn German, and also attempting to learn Polish. Messing around with electronics too, but my current freelance job satisfies that, although i'm growing increasingly tired of the work itself (building valve audio equipment for a small company).
-
There is indeed a weight loss theme and I too have lost a few lbs but that is not due to exercise unfortunately.
-
When not indulging in rock and roll I like to pass the time with sex and drugs.
-

Speaking of cycling, just signed myself up for the CRC Marshbrook (in Shropshire) 50km mountain bike marathon - anyone else fancy doing it? There are shorter routes as well but I thought I'd push myself and go for the longer one :)
It's a non-competitive event and apparently a really laid back friendly atmosphere. It's on the 3rd July.
I missed out last year as I injured my shoulder on the big tabletop jump at the Forest of Dean, so hoping it won't happen again!
-
Sorry to hear about your health news Philly & Steve.
Other hobbies. I took up roller skating again. I used to do it all the time in my teens to a reasonable level. I got a pair of quad skates from a shop near me. It's something that I can do with my girlfriend and her daughter. I've got right into it so I bought a pair of inlines on eBay. I've tried them out in the park and it's great fun. I'm thinking of getting a longboard as well (a big skateboard). I bought a mountain bike late last year but I've only been out on it once. I swim a bit and went tonight. It was the first time in ages and I'm unfit again. I put on weight over Christmas so I've got to lose it.
I like home recording when time permits. I haven't done any for a while. Time. I don't get too much.
I like reading and film too.

I appologise for not commenting on this properly the first time through, as I did not know if you wanted to retain a degree of privacy over the issue . Thankfully , Johnny Mac's post 'nudged' me to log in and openly express concern. I wish you the very best , in dealing with whatever it is you are facing.

Rather than taking the piss like I have been during this thread, my hobbies at the minute are:
Going to work
Getting home from work and playing with the nipper until he goes to bed
Picking up the other laptop and working on my business plan
This takes up all my life at the minute and is pretty much what I do every weekday. At the weekend, I do the same without the day job. Think I need to take some more time off as I can feel myself slowly buring out. Still it's a means to an end, hopefully in the next 7 years or so I can retire.

No need to apologize but thanks for your kind words. Thanks too Johnny. I have been laid low by a virus of some description that has affected various organs. Doesn't seem to be much they can do and they think that time will heal and I think they are right as I am starting to feel better and I am now out and about a bit more. Another blood test in a few weeks will hopefully show that I am recovering. Once I feel strong again I shall start going swimming.

I recently watched Wonders of the Solar System with Prof Brian Cox. Awesome bluray (or itunes) from the bbc. missed it when on tv. Hes doing wonders of the universe in march. Its perked my interest in this sort of thing. Id like to get a telescope but think being in a city/cost would make it a waste of time.

Sorry to hear this. Aloe-vera-juice heals stomach and bowels and is overall very good for the body.

I seem to have hijacked this thread  thanks.Mrs 38th has me on lots of herbal and natural products and I have also had some acupuncture and I don't know if I am right but I am feeling better already.

Acupuncture really helps me too.

I don't think you've really hijacked it. It just reinforces why I only really ever post on this forum - such a great group of people offering great insight from their own experiences and giving support. I know the typed word often isn't as great as the spoken word but it's very reassuring to come to a place that feels secure and offers some great advice and support.
Back on thread. One of my hobbies other than being a Dad and playing guitar is running. Nearly got up to 15st over the last few weeks and need to step up the running seriously!

Incidentally, acupuncture has been shown to be effective (statistically significant in a scientific study) in fertility treatment, too. I think it's the only alternative medicine that's been shown to help, although I don't think it was a huge effect.
Of all the alternative therapies, acupuncture is one I have some respect for (although I must admit I'm not too keen on the idea for myself, haha). I don't count some herbal remedies here with 'alternative' medicine, because in some cases the plant (or other source) genuinely contains some potent compounds which have specific biological effects. There are so many examples of this in conventional medicine, too - take aspirin for instance, which was first isolated from willow bark.
Sorry, derailing the thread again!

Hobbies:
- Building effects pedals. If anything this has become more important than noodling with the guitars (mainly because I'm not particularly good at that and I really like building stuff)
- Cars. It's the biggy. I have, ahem, one or two. Well ok four, but that's only because I've not got anywhere to keep any more. I make an annual pilgrimage to Spa with a sports prototype race car that I co-own with a friend and have a particular interest (but don't own... yet) in old race cars. Love driving just about anything. Like tinkering also (have a kit car too...).
- Films. Worked in a video shop when I was a teen at college (best job in the world, ever). Basically turned me into a massive film obsessive/nerd. Even after purging my Laserdiscs and VHS tapes, I still have 5 bookcases full of dvds/blu-rays.
- Gaming. Though not as much these days. Dead Space 2 is currently scaring the shitee out of me saying that...

Got to admit I can't trust meditation if it will stop me daydreaming.
Daydreaming is the only think that gets me through meetings. It's my last refuge for the working day.
It got me through school and college god damn it and now it gets me through work and talking to the missus!
You are me. I'm pretty sure I'd have been diagnosed with ADD had it been around when I was at school. I just cannot pay attention for long periods of time. My mind drifts off very quickly and it used to get me into lots of bother with the teachers who thought I was thick... I remember them making me re-sit an exam on my own because they were convinced I'd cheated (I aced it, I was always good at exams), such was my lack of attention in class. Only if I find the subject very interesting and I can take part in a practical way, do I tend to pay any attention worth speaking of. Still suffer from it. Can't do meetings, and training courses I can make it to about 10:30 on the Monday before I zone out. I know I do it, and there's not a damn thing I can do about it.
