Hi all,
So finally we have got round to doing a proper recording! Our EP entitled Fatally Punched In The Face will be out on 26th May 2011. I have the first run of CDs here, and am getting very excited in expectation of the gig we're playing on the 26th to launch the album!
The tracks were recorded and mixed by Tim Lovegrove (guitarist in local punk heroes Junkie Brush (http://www.rivetgunrecords.co.uk/)), very good friend of the band, and extremely capable musician and engineer who has helped us enormously with this production - huge thanks, Tim!
The tracks were mastered by the BKP forum's very own MDV. I want to point out here what a pleasure it was to work with Mark on these recordings - he was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, and I hope you'll agree when you hear the final product, capable! Anyone looking to do recording/mixing/mastering - get in touch with Mark, I thoroughly recommend his work!!
The guitar used is my Wez Venables Vociferator in drop A loaded - for this recording in October - with a Miracle Man bridge. I now use an Aftermath, which I prefer for live use and for this style, but the MM is also a fantastic pickup!
For details about the guitar, search on these forums for Vociferator :)
The gig will be at the Bullingdon Arms in Oxford on 26th May 2011. Facebook event link is here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=190025404376555 (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=190025404376555). This should be a storming gig! If anyone wants to come along but needs a floor to kip on, get in touch, I'm sure we can sort something out :)
The 4-track EP will be available for download or hard-copy purchase from the 26th of May - details will be up on the Rivet Gun Records (http://www.rivetgunrecords.co.uk) website nearer the time.
Here's a link to our myspace page which has one track (called Insomnia) uploaded as a teaser:

Cheers, fellas! Sorting out purchasing details soon so will PM you once I've got that arranged :)
-
put me down for a copy too!
-
Sounds good! I like that it still sounds like a proper band rather than overprocessed shitee like some metal recordings can be :)
Guitar tone is great as is the riffage.
-
Sounds great Roo. The mastering is well impressive Mark. :D
Like the album cover. Good luck with it and the gig :D
-
Thanks Johnny!
-
i'll be getting a copy too :)
love the cover!!
-
Turns out that i'm not on call that evening, so i'll be there! First gig whilst in Oxford, so it'd better be good! :P
-
that guitar tone is nasty. just the way i like it :D sounds great dudes
-
i see on the rivetgun site there's word of a download, but no mention of hard copies. how do we go about getting a cd?
-
Wow, thanks all for your interest!
I think the buy CD button will appear on or after the 26th - that's the general release date. I will make sure there's somewhere online to buy it - failing that I shall post up again and PM people details for how to pay for it, and I will send out copies myself.
Fear not - it will be available! :) Unless I run out, in which case there'll be a delay of a couple of days while I get more printed, but let's be honest, that's unlikely! :)
Oli - come and say hi at the gig, I'm the geeky looking guy with the odd guitar playing last - same goes for anyone else who's able to make it down.
Cheers!

Boo, turns out I can't make it now-- got a call from a client this afternoon, so i've got to fly out to Jordan tomorrow for work, so i'm gonna miss the gig :( Next time!!
-
Well, it's release date!
You can buy the digital download for a meagre $4 here:
http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/13gauge1
or hold on until I get something up where you can order the hard copy - should be available later today, if not it will be done tomorrow :)
Shame about your work, Oli - if anyone else is able to make it down, do be sure to say hello and that you're from the BKP forums and I'll give you a discount on the hard copy (normally £4). :)
-
I'd like a CD as well, if I may?
I mean I know I can just burn one, but with the art and stuff. Much more betterer. Let me know the details, payment etc, after the gig/launch/when you can.
-
Yeah I'd prefer a hardcopy to a download as well when you've got 'em.
-
i downloaded as i did not want to wait - but i still want a hardcopy roo :)
-
is this available on bit-torrent yet?
do let me know when a CD is available, I'm wanting one.
loving that track, the vocals are sick - as are the guitars of course.
-
I was a bit scared to listen to this.... but I just checked out "Insomnia". Twice, in fact.
Not really my kind of thing... but it sounds good, and highly professional. The vocals are kind of scary, but I must admit they work, especially the less guttural bits.
(Glad to see you've still got that Beatles influence! :P )
-
i'll buy the download tommorow. can't be arsed to register on cdbaby right now. but you can count on me definitely!
-
Okay, at last it's purchasable in hard copy form from the RGR website:
www.rivetgunrecords.co.uk
The EP is £4 + £0.50 packing and shipping - paypal buy now button is up there
Thanks for your patience and your support, guys!!

-
allright! bought the download. time to give this baby a listen!
edit: i love it man! great stuff! very well recorded too
needs more telecaster XD
-
cd arrived already! now that's speed metal :)
just had one listen, wow! can't really compare it to anything as it's not the sort of stuff i usually listen to, but it's very impressive. great to hear a detuned guitar that still has punch and clarity. the vocals are good, but i admit i would find them wearing over a whole album. obviously i'll need a few more listens, but first impressions are most excellent, dude ;)
-
Yep, mine arrived this morning too. Top flight turnaround time!
-
what! where is mine :( ;)
-
Mine too. Yay! Thanks roo.
-
Back now and those who've not received yours yet - fear not, they are in the post!
If anyone else wants to place an order, do feel free :)
Hope you're enjoying them, guys :)

Got a review in Oxfordshire's Nightshift Magazine, which is normally utterly brutal and unforgiving...
http://nightshift.oxfordmusic.net/2011/jul.pdf
It is copied and pasted here:
13 Gauge’s EP is titled ‘Fatally Punched In The Face’, it’s released on local punk monsters Junkie Brush’s Rivet Gun label and its cover features a pair of fists dripping with gore. Obviously it’s a CD of easy jazz-soul ballads.
In the real world, though, ‘Fatally Punched…’ is virulently ogre-ish grindcore with an obstinately nagging guitar line that needles and needles you until you’re fit to start lobbing punches at passing strangers. On it tumbles, ransacking Carcass as it goes, words like “kill” randomly popping their heads above the otherwise unintelligible gibberish the demon-eyed gibbon on vocals is spouting. And then it finishes and you realise it’s a pointless three minutes of tuneless aural bar-stewardry that merrily shites on most of the desperate to be liked proper bands we’re forced to listen to every working day (on the days when we’re not working, we enjoy smashing up garden sheds while listening to tuneless aural bar-stewardry at criminal volume).
Onward it charges, ugly, brutal and probably full of maggots, faster and fast until it turns inside out in its own skin and splits itself in two like Rumplestiltskin, spilling innards onto the floor, which it then feverishly picks up, slops into a bucket and claims to be a chorus. Admirable behaviour of which far more bands should take notice.

Epic review! Well done that man.
