you all know i like to piss about on occasion - this is one of those times!
i decided i wanted to try swirling a guitar so did some research, watched some vids and got a general feel for the process
after a few test pieces i started to think i was ready to try a guitar. in hindsight - more practice may have been needed ;)
so first i did a test guitar, its something i made a long time ago, butchered a few times and left in the corner
the results are a very piss poor swirl - but i cant decide if i actually like it or not. basically i had issues with thickness and amount of paint on this one and it glooped and ran, looking like a bloody mess with a bit of a swirl appearing near the top

...
anyway, after thinning the red a bit and using less of it i had another go on a copper leafed guitar. this time i still had the odd gloopy spot, but also really struggled to get the water droplets of the guitar so its a bit speckly in places, but much closer to the look i was after so i reckon this one could be good once its cleared and all buffed up. with the copper leaf changing colour in different light is looks pretty interesting

so yeah, not awesome results yet - but enough to make me try again at some point and it was fun doing it
-
That second one is quite nice....... which is good because the first one is bloody awful
What sort of state did you leave the bath in?
-
looking like someone had slit their wrists in it ;)
nah, i used a large bin - outside!
-
You know when you have a nose bleed and stuff a bit of bog roll up your nostril. The first one looks a bit like the bog roll when you pull it out
The second one is really growing on me. Reminds me of Isle of Wight Glass.
-
The 1st 1 would go well for someone in a zombie/horror punk band or something
I really like the 2nd 1 though, would look ace with a lighter coloured scratchplate on it imo :D
-
I like both, but the first one would tempt me to bite or lick it... it reminds me of a raspberry ripple! The second one looks pretty badass to me.
-
that's pretty good for the first couple of tries, i'd have thought. :)

well i am happy with the actual results - but not happy with them as 'swirls'. loads of great examples of the process on youtube... but i guess it all comes down to getting the feel for it

I actually think the 1st one looks good. It looks like marble.
-
i must admit, the first one has its charms
-
The first one is surely the coolest looking in my eyes. I really like it. Great job :D

I like the first one the best, too. I do get the impression it might yell at me and make me clean the house for no reason for a few days every month.
It's always fun to just give things a try with no expectations. Looks like fun.
-
I like the first one too - it's raspberry ripple!
-
I like them both, but if I had to choose I think it would have to be the first one, for it reminds me of a good acid trip.
Who cares if the back is a bit gloopy, nobody's going to see it or pay attention to it if you ever mean to put that guitar to work on stage.
-
I'd like them better if they weren't red! The "spilled blood" thing doesn't appeal to me at all.

ah yeah i see what you mean- they look good but aren't necessarily swirls, kind of thing.
i think i like the first one best too. but i agree with philly, i'm not that fond of the red/white look. you need more crazy colours, like blues, yellows, oranges, pinks and greens :D

I only just got round to watching that clip - very impressive! From just some coloured paint floating on water, it's almost miraculous how well it turns out! :D
Does that guy sell bodies on eBay? I'm sure I've seen some very similar.

^ Wow! I'm actually starting to get into this swirling lark.
-
yeah i definitely like them on the right style of guitar. I wouldn't want one on vintage telecaster, say, but on an 80s superstrat or the like they look badass.
out of this swirled has a bunch on its site.
-
i think the colours make a difference too... obviously multi neons takes you straight down the vai route. i like simpler schemes.
love the outofthisswirled site, they are so bloody perfect!
-
love the outofthisswirled sight, they are so bloody perfect!
Just been checking it out - the amount of control they manage to exercise over such a seemingly random process is amazing! :D
I'd like to see it on a few more non-Ibanez guitars. I love the way the patterns go right up the neck and headstock on the V gwEm posted.
-
i've posted this before, and I still think its wicked:

hard to see on that if it was done at the same time. i suspect neck and body were dipped seperately - you need a bloody big tub to dunk a full guitar.. nice though, when you see a through neck thats been done
-
Call me an old-fashioned luddite, but...
The later ones getting posted, that some of you guys seem to like, do not grab me at all.
I do have a sneaking regard for your first attempt Wez - kinda raspberry ripple :D. Second one, should grab me more, because I like the colours involved, but... er, not for me
-

pfft, things have moved on since the 70s Andy.. these are the 1980s now, get with the programme! ;) ;)
-
Whaddya mean 70s? I haven't even got out of the 60s yet
-
Very cool how it's done!!
-
Very cool how it's done!!
see the vid i linked to for a proper example
basically a large container full of water and borax to break the surface tension (i think I may have needed a little more of this), then you pour oil based enamel paint onto the water and swirl it about a bit. slowly dunk the guitar

I saw it, just as I said, it's really cool as it's done... I had no idea before this video
-
lol, i read it as
"very cool, hows it done?"
-
If done on a modern metalplank, I like swirl. Def. not on vintagestyle guitars.
-
I tried swirling some effects pedal cases too - got the borax, enamel paint, water at the right temp, followed the 'how to' online and it came out a mess. I think there's a real trial and error process till you find what works for you.
