Yep, there was a reason I've sold a lot of gear recently
Warning: long post alert!
Rewind to Early April, and I attended the World Guitars PRS event where I met Paul Smith, and had him sign my Modern Eagle. Davy Knowles was at the event, with his newly introduced Private Stock Signature Limited, and I was blown away by the look and tone of it: www.prsguitars.com/signatureltd/
I also loved the look of this one from the NAMM show in January, which is Paul Smith's personal guitar:

With GAS rapidly rising, I did some digging on the model to find out what was coming to the UK. 15 had been allocated to dealers and were fully specced up, but nothing matched what I'd like - either the neck shape wasn't right, or they had a trem or the colour was cr@p. For the price they are, I was only interested if the spec was spot on, so I gave up dreaming.
Except...
#15 had been held back for the boss of Headline Distribution, but Mark @ Guitars4You snagged it for me. I only had a couple of days to spec it and then the order went in. As an added bonus, after the 3 recent PRS events there was some of Paul's "Wood Library" stash of maple in the UK waiting to be shipped back, so I could even choose my own top - as far as I know, no one else in the UK had been able to do this.
Result!
Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago, and I had a call from Mark. I was expecting the "it's here" call, but unfortunately the guitar's build hadn't even started! The top I'd chosen was stuck in US Customs, and showed no sign of imminent release. Bugger!
So, I got to choose a new top 8) I sent the PS team the pic of Paul's guitar above, plus Miles Kennedy's below, and asked them to find something similar:
And this is what they've offered me. It's better than my original one, so I'm well happy!
I mocked this up to see how similar the woods were, and it seems pretty darn close to me:

So I guess it'll be here around Christmas time, which will be a nice present. I've always wanted a green Modern Eagle, but stand no chance of getting one as they're so rare, so this Sig Ltd will be the substitute. I've gone for a green top and natural back and sides, like the colour of the guitar below.
The waiting begins again!

Congrats! That's a superb tiger flame. The color is just beautiful. I guess you'll receive the holy grail for Christmas. :)
-
So how long are you keeping this one for? :orcass:
-
but seriously, that looks badass
-
So how long are you keeping this one for? :orcass:
Forever, same as my Modern Eagle. After years of painstaking research I know what I like, and top end PRS's based on the McCarty model are the schnitz for me!
-
AAARRGGGHHHH!
Can't see the pictures! :x
I shall have to wait until later.
So why the early "confession", Dave (apart from it being good for the soul)?
-
Nice one Dave!
-
Yeah, that'll probably be a fairly nice little guitar.
-
Bit of an update on the top situation Phil, plus it's been a bit quiet on the forum!
I'm on hols this week and was at a loose end, so why not fess up and see what abuse I get?
-
it seems like no time at all since you were discussing pickups for Squire Tele's and signature Les Paul's, things have certainly changed :)
looks like it'll be a beauty, Dave. Congratulations, and i look forward to seeing the finished article
-
Cheers mate, can't wait to see it myself. The cash from Pearly is covering most of the cost, but it still stings when I think about it :(
-
If you're getting it around Christmas, you should go with red knobs. That's a great "almost got away" story. You better hold on to that one.
-
Really cool color! :)
-
Congrats !The Sig is really a special guitar !Did you play one at the WG PRS event ?How is it?I'm intrigued by the Pu's & combinations...Looks like a "dream guitar" 8)!
-
I've not played a Sig yet, although Mark at Guitars4You has invited me to have a play on the one he has in stock. I just haven't had the time to pop to his shop
There are a couple of pickup demos on YouTube, and Mark's description sounds pretty good here:

xmas time, a green guitar with red knobs - stand it in the corner with some tinsel and baubles and save on buying an xmas tree

You crazy nob-end!
It makes sense of the Pearly sale for me now. Even though you'd established the fact that a Les Paul just wasn't for you (and that made perfect sense to me), I just couldn't see how once you'd got your hands on a fine and prestigeous representation of your fave guitarist's iconic guitar, bought and paid for, why you'd feel the need to move it on. I saw no problem with hanging on to it even though it wasn't likely to gig - you'd still get big enjoyment out of owning it and having a bit of a "Billy moment" in the living room every now and then. Unless of course... you needed to fund something else that was even more important!
I had a feeling there must be something in the pipeline. Not at all surprised it's a guitar starting with "P", but I wouldn't have been surprised if it was unrelated to music and we never got to hear of it either.
Guitar itself - with the pics of brown guitars I was thinking "yeah, whatever floats your boat...". It looks well classy, etc, etc, but doesn't grab me. But then the green - wow, yeah, that's gonna look fab! :D
I still have slight reservations about the look of the pickups, but I'd soon get used to them. Btw, I've just noticed in these pics - the bridge and neck pickups are different sizes... that's not my imagination is it?
Anyway, nice one, hope the wait doesn't seem too long.
-
Great news Dave - I wondered when you would be posting new guitar stuff on here again!
I don't suppose you'll be in the Basingstoke area around Christmas will you?
-
Nice looking plank Dave. Should've guessed of course.

Nope, they're different sizes mate. No BKPs for this one!

Oh aye mate, it'll be living with me ;)
-
Ah, I can see it now! Love the green! :D
-

:D Let me know if you ever fancy playing it through my Martamp Bantam. That is of course if I'm allowed to just look at the PRS.
Ah, I can see it now! Love the green! :D
Me too. Lovely colour!
-
Ian - you're welcome to thrash out something on it anytime. Shobet, Matt77 and tomjackson have all insisted on test drives too
-
If ever there was a case of "I'm not worthy" this is it!
-
But cheers for the offer - I'm sure I'll give it a go. You might need some ear muffs on though.

We will hold you to that, but we are going to KFC first and we're not going to wash our hands

:D Did I mention that I only play guitar when blind drunk? It sounds much better that way.
-
Nice one Dave,
I was expecting this post when you put the rather tasty gibson up for sale. It will be one heck of a christmas present for you. Enjoy it when it comes :D
-
Cheers mate, I'm sure I will!
-
Looks lush Dave, but will you gig it? Think you should change from Twinfan to Tonemonster
cheers
keith
-
Ha ha - nice one Keith!
Yep, this is going to be my #1 live guitar when it arrives. I love my Modern Eagle to death, but it's irreplaceable. I only know of one of the same spec for sale in the UK, but it's not a blue one and I'm sure it wouldn't feel the same. I can't even get the Private Stock team to build one to my spec as there are no more Brazilian Rosewood neck blanks, even if they could export it to the UK (which they can't).
Also, the split coil tones aren't the greatest they're a bit thin sounding. Not that I use them much (I tend to use the middle position of both 'buckers instead) but it would be nice to have a better option.
The Sig Ltd can be replaced if required, plus it will have better sounding split coil tones. Perfect for gigging, and that's what I'm buying it for.
I reckon the first ding might sting a bit, but after that it should wear in nicely
-

Phew ..... for a minute there, as you've got a new super job and have said you were leaving YC/DC and possibly your other band, I thought you'd become the "stereotyped" PRS owner ( "investment lawyers and bankers who hang them on the wall") :D :D
-
Not a chance! I'm hoping to continue with my current covers band :)
-

"A bit" ? :x

yada yada, heard it all before ;) ;)
seriously though - congrats
-
I'm hoping this Sig Ltd will be an ME "+", but we'll see when it lands I guess!
-
Congratulations!
And I'm impressed that it'll be your number one- guitars are for playing, no matter how expensive
-
It took me a while to come to that position though, the first few gigs with me Modern Eagle were a touch nerve racking!
PRS collectors wouldn't touch it with a bargepole now, but I love the fact it's wearing in nicely
-
Dave - given the numbers of them you have owned, I find it mildy ironic that you disassociate yourself from the negative term 'PRS collectors'
Anyway.
When's it ready?
-
Lets hope PRS dont get raided for illegal wood imports the way that Gibson have......
There is a lot of discussion of it over at Birds and Moons forum.
Unless PRS have been naughty over paperwork I can't see it happening

LOL!
-
Ha ha! I've never been a true PRS collector, other guitars yes.
The estimate I have at the moment is end Sept build complete, mid October delivery...
-
A quick update on my PS. It's in build at the minute and nearing completion, it should be heading over here on the next UK shipment from the factory :o Rumour has it, it's the last PS Signature Limited to be built which is kinda cool.
Due to the shell inlays etc it'll take a little while to get though Fisheries and Customs on both the US and UK sides, but it should be landing in mid-October.
Just in time for a gig at the end of October - marvellous!
-

So #100/100, in theory? :)
-
Not quite - the number got allocated when the original order was put in. It'll be #37/100, but the last built...
-
It's a lovely colour Dave. I hope its a keeper for you.
-
Can't imagine it won't be Johnny - I love the McCarty shape and feel, and the PS guys will know what they're doing re. tone woods...
-
I can't wait to see how the new one turns out and your review compared to the ME. For me that ME is the ultimate PRS, I think you are going to have a hard time bettering that one but it seems you know that. I saw one for sale quite a while back on the net and really wish I had sold a shed load of stuff to get it... hindsight is a wonderful thing! :(
-
I've said to myself if I see another stoptail model for sale in a colour I like (slate, abalone, emerald green, red tiger) I'll find the cash and buy it.
Luckily one hasn't turned up yet!
There was a lovely abalone one in Sounds Great for ages that I should have snagged...

Dangerous promise, Dave.... :?

I think you got the best PRS mate so I wouldn't bother!

You'll have to bob up for a test drive sometime mate, or I can head down to you?

Absolutely! It will be great just to meet up with you..... the guitars are a bonus. Think I'll come up in the van!!!!!
-
Get your theiving hands off my gear!!!!
-

-
A quick update - my PS Sig Ltd made the September shipment to the UK and should be here in a couple of weeks :D
-
Just had the call - my Private Stock arrived at Headline (distributors) today, and has literally been pulled off the pallet and re-labelled to head to Mark @ Guitars4You for delivery tomorrow.
I'm expecting a call tomorrow morning when it's arrived and he's checked it over, plus I've asked for a pic ASAP. Fingers crossed, I'll be heading over to collect it first thing on Saturday morning! :o
-
NICE! PDT_003
-
We will see you Saturday!!! :D
-
Got folks over all day mate, gonna do an early dart as Mark is opening up the shop early for me!
I'll have to arrange for you and Shobet to come over and relic it for me sometime after that
-
I bet you can't wait mate!!! Anticipation is growing! Maybe I'll see it it one day.
-
Probably in a couple of weeks Ian ;)
