Careful what you say Andy - you may get your 335 impounded!

I'm not surprised they have been raided although I am surprised that it is not for shocking quality control.

And the moral of the story is illegal madagascan mahogany isnt worth it if you cant actually build a good guitar from it.

Oh, the fail.

Maybe its not for the use or source of the wood, its that they might have put some in firebird Xs

If anything, the design department should be shaken down for possession of illegal substances:

judging from those pictures they've been raided for making butt-ugly guitars and wasting good wood.

The other guitarist in my doom band bought one of those stupid SGs. I gave him tons of pelters and eventually he chucked it and went back to his Jazzmaster.

Can't say I'm surprised, there are simply far too many instruments produced out of "mahogany"! There needs to be a ban on it for a couple of years if you ask me.

There are plenty of nice tonewoods out there that are ecologically sustainable. Swamp Ash, Alder, Maple.
And after playing my friend's Hagstrom strat, I'm pretty certain we could without ebony as well.

I think i would stop buying guitars if they stopped making them out of mahogany

I'm digging swampash more and more. Tonally and the weight-advantage. When we gig 3,5 hours, I don't want a 5kg Les Paul hanging on my neck.

Must DEFINITELY be the Mesa. My main guitar is swamp ash and the clarity of it is almost staggering. Even with an A-pig in it, it can do that whole "djent" thing the kids are so worked up about these days..

Reactions to this have been hysterical on US-centric forums. Obama Administration bending to foreign laws while punishing their own citizens for trying to run a business!

Definitely wasn't a colossal company breaking laws they were well aware of and could easily have adhered to. Definitely not.

Now, blanket-banning mods aside I still quite like that forum, but by God... How American can you get? If Gibson gets busted for shady business then I'll applaud it no matter how much I happen to love Gibson guitars. If you break the law, there must be a consequence for it. It's a simple thing, really.

Captain Creative Calamity Henry is claiming that the raid is illegal, of course.

Someone in the justice department probably ordered a firebird X when drunk, it arrived, they tried it and then exacted appropriate vengence.

interview with henry
http://bighollywood.breitbart.com/hollywoodland/2011/08/26/gibson-guitar-ceo-on-obama-doj-raids-were-being-persecuted/

Oh sweet lactating Virgin Mary those people piss me off. Referring to an international law as if it somehow doesn't apply to the US? Talking about Gay Marriage (and why is that still such a huge issue over there?) and Immigration in a matter where those things have no relevance whatsoever?!

What kind of ass-backwards logic is that?

I'm glad I'm at work so I can't watch that interview. I'd probably just fly into a screaming rage over it. I do know, however, that I probably won't find it morally defensible to buy a factory-new Gibson anymore..

if they're guilty of using illegal wood, then that's sad but i would have to support the raids.  it is odd though that almost a year after the first raid there haven't been any charges or, apparently, clarification of what's going on.  the anti obama right wing rhetoric of that editorial comment is crazy, but i can perhaps understand Henry's feelings of victimisation if his factories are being raided, his property taken away indefinitely, and all with no explanation of what's actually going on.

what is true is that this raid has got a headline.

if they'd have raided some small luthiers it wouldn't have made news.

another interview with henry with more actual details and a lot more conspiracy theories and  scaremongering
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2E-tXQ6kQoU&feature=channel_video_title

i do feel for gibson at this point, but i am disturbed by a ceo who has not got a clue how much money his company can make - not even a vague prediction!

i also feel he should have corrected the interviewer when we referred to wood as a renewable resource.  the term does not really apply to ebony and rosewood in any practical sense, at least not yet

some talk of the real issue would be nice

Title: Re: Gibson factories have been raided today!
Post by: WezV on September 03, 2011, 12:12:03 PM
afaik fender are not really using that much wood from this part of the world - i thought they were still using south american rosewoods for most stuff

the other big american guitar builders would more likely be PRS (rosewood necks and fretboards) or one of the acoustic companies (back and sides and fretboards)

It's Martin that's usually been brought up by all the yank rightest morons as being left alone because Chris Martin is a Democrat donor. That Henry buffoon has cited them many a time, too.

I think I found it...

Dear President Barack Obama,
Gibson Guitar is currently under investigation by the U.S. Justice Department regarding imported wood used to manufacture instruments. Gibson has been raided twice by armed government agents, even though the wood has been legally obtained and the company has complied with all foreign laws.

Please show your support for Gibson and consumers by doing the following:

• The U.S. government will stop the current investigation and negotiate a fair and conclusive settlement. The government will commit to a timeline for this to happen and return materials that were seized. The government will agree that 90 days notice will be given prior to any hostile actions (seizures, raids, etc.) and the provision of dialog and independent third party adjudication prior to action.

• The Lacey Act will be amended to provide clear guidance on what unequivocally will satisfy the need to comply with the “due care” and other provisions. This needs to be defined in a realistic and reasonably actionable form. A code of conduct will be provided for when federal agencies do investigations. Recourse will be provided to companies or individuals being investigated who feel the investigating agency is abusing its power, rather than truly seeking justice. There will be due process where an independent third party can adjudicate grievances and insure there are consequences for abuse.

• Consumers will not be prosecuted for owning or transporting instruments for their own use (i.e. not attempting to make a profit on their sale).

Sincerely,
[Your name]

So Dear Henry expects us consumers to interfere in an ongoing investigation? As if a trial were subject to citizen petitions or a popular vote?

He also has gone on every crank radio show, trying to paint himself as a sort of folk hero, unfairly persecuted by Big Brother because of some piddling political donations.

I conclude that Homie is even more delusional than I had previously thought. And considering that Henry is the guy who previously brought us the Firebird X, that says something.

Americans basically worship corporations and think they deserve the same rights as individuals, so I wouldn't say he's delusional, I'd say he's very aware of American culture.

Did you read the review?

Basically said the guitar itself is OK if you don't mind the looks, but all the electronic gubbins is over-complicated and a bit hit-or-miss soundwise.  Pretty much what you'd expect, basically!

I saw Queensryche once, can't remember if it was after Mindcrime or Empire.  Might have been the tour you're talking about, it was at the Kentish Town Forum (or whatever it is now)?  But I think I missed the support band.

Terrible gig, I was stuck at the back and couldn't see a thing.

Yeah - read it but was a little disappointed that they didn't launch into a tirade of abuse! I know that they have to try and give a balanced opinion but wonder what they really felt about it. I think there were enough hints in the review that lead me to believe they really didn't like it at all.
