Title: Warmoth Thanksgiving Sale
Post by: FernandoDuarte on November 22, 2011, 07:02:53 PM
Think last time I told about a sale from Warmoth here some people bought somethings...

So. they're giving 10% discont from 24th to 28th November on any item on Showcase. Also there is a 20% off any custom options for Showcase items like nut installs, stainless steel frets and finishes...

Again, it's only avaiable on online orders.

So bad my credit card is already full-filled

I'm actually surprised they haven't pushed their prices up due to a stock shortage

I've been considering putting together a Warmoth guitar over the next few months so this lightened my mood. However what with it being so close to christmas I may pass on the deal till just after the new year. :(

I've been sniffing round the Warmoth site on and off for years. Thing is it ain't exactly cheap in the first place and when you dial in shipping and duties well...... 10% off loads a money is still loads a money.

Yeah, it's not cheap - but then if you look at the eBay shops selling genuine Fender necks and bodies etc, they're a lot more expensive than Warmoth.

There's not a massive amount left, to be honest.

Well, that's not true.  But not much I definitely want to sell.  Maybe two or three bodies and one or two necks.

How much do UK customs charge (%) if you get Warmoth shipped to the UK?
Title: Re: Warmoth Thanksgiving Sale
Post by: Sifu Ben on December 04, 2011, 01:17:56 AM
Typically 3% + VAT, plus a "handling charge" of between £7 and £17 from the courier/ Royal Mail .

The VAT is 20%, Fernando, so total import charges are close to 25% of the original price.

What would it cost you in Brazil?

I worked with a fellow from Uruguay. He said import taxes were at least half of the declared value and more if the person collecting was an extra dirty and corrupt SOB. He claimed it was less expensive to have a custom made vs a Mexi Jazz Bass. Is it a similar situation in Brazil?

What would it cost you in Brazil?

[(price + shipping cost x 60%) + (price + shipping cost x 18%)]

[(500+80 x 60%) + (500 + 80 x 18%)] = [348 x 62] = 410

60% is the importation tax and 18% is the tax for manufactured goods...

It must suck to pay a lot of tax and getting little to nothing in return. Luckily I think I get a lot in return for my tax money (I didn't mean to ruin your day, Fernando  :))

This may be a silly question but hey, I actually don't have a clue.

Say your total from Warmoth comes to $900. Obviously on top of that is delivery. Do you pay customs tax on the price of the items with the delivery charge included or not?
Title: Re: Warmoth Thanksgiving Sale
Post by: Sifu Ben on December 06, 2011, 07:18:49 PM
Confusingly, I believe you only pay import duty on the actual item, but you pay VAT on the total.

So I take it you'll pay 20% of the Total inc. P&P. And then just a small amount for the Import Duty?
Title: Re: Warmoth Thanksgiving Sale
Post by: shobet on December 06, 2011, 09:13:16 PM
Last time I did it I think it works out like this.

You pay import duty on the total cost of the guitar + postage + insurance, which is then converted to GBP. I think electric guitar duty is about 4%, which is then added on. and then you pay VAT @ 20% on top of all that.

On top of that the courier will probably also charge a fee for handling it.

Others may have done this more recently as I stopped doing it when the exchange rates became less favourable.

It's hard to figure out exactly, because you don't know what exchange rates they're using.

Also, if something comes by normal post I don't think they charge VAT on the delivery charge, but if it comes by courier they do include the delivery charge.  Warmoth use UPS, so you're paying VAT on the total cost including delivery.

I usually just estimate that I'm going to have to pay roughly 23-24% of the total cost, including the delivery charge.  If it turns out less, it's a pleasant surprise.

Isn't that the standard option?  I thought the other option, whatever it was, was even more expensive...?

I'm pretty sure I always pick the cheaper shipping option, but the parts always arrive by UPS.  I've got to know the UPS delivery bloke quite well!

Oh, then maybe I did choose the more expensive option because I didn't want my stuff knocking around in the hold of a ship for a few weeks with a load of rats and scurvy seadogs.  Or something.

I'll check it more carefully next time!

Just in the process of finishing my Warmoth Strat (first build) typical there is a sale now lol. Had a few Strats in my time but never got on with the fingerboard Radius completely, so a build was logical.

Spec:
Irish Tour set (cream covers & controls)
Parchment Scratchplate
Alder Body (sealed with Tru Oil)
Maple Neck (sealed with Tru Oil)
Pau Ferro Fingerboard with compound radius & 6100 frets.
Wilkinson Trem, Black TUSQ nut and Sperzels.

When its done will post some pics

I've been tempted to try a Tru-Oil finish but I'm worried I'll make a complete hash of it.

Tru Oil is really easy to apply mate. I done it to my Strat neck and a Warmoth I had. It really brought out the grain in the wood.

if it does you rub it all back with 0000 liberon wire wool and apply some more.   do this after every few coats anyway for the best feeling tru-oil finishes.

generally when playing with tru-oil i think i have made a mess, it rubs back nicely and feels great  - even if its rubbed back so much that you think none is left on it... it still feels great

i think my approach is different to others. i dont try and use tru-oil as a lacquer substitute.  sure its possible, but if i want lacquer i will use that
