Title: An obnoxiously 80s guitar
Post by: Toe-Knee on March 02, 2012, 11:13:23 PM
Im considering putting something obnoxiously 80s together.

im pretty set on this body

Now choosing hardware & a neck is the bit that im struggling with.

Colourwise more than anything i think black would be a safe bet and i want a worn maple neck but im not 100% on how it would look.

Pickups will have to be green of course.

I would love one of those swirled bodies-- those guys really have their technique down, just amazing!

I'd think that black hardware would work on that kind of guitar, but as you said-- green pickups.

You should put a YELLOW single humbucker in the bridge, slap an OFR on it, single volume control and leave the holes in the body, maple/maple neck with reverse headstock

I think purple pickups would look good.  There's something about green and purple as a combo...

But definitely black hardware.

Pah!
it's more of a post 1990 thing - the swirling on guitars (passion and warfare came out in 1990)
- although it was popular in the 70s on other objects-in fact they sold a kit for kids to swirl their toys with.

Technicalities aside - it looks like fun!

My other option was something tiger/snakeskin but i thought that may be a bit too OTT :D

Can you get a pickup with a colored cover that is glow in the dark? That would be so awesome.

Also, led inlays?^^

Wow.  Just looking at their site.  Some of those designs are actually quite subtle, and I could see myself building them.

I'm with Philly on this one. Purple pickups would be just right and also black hardware.

Apart from that I wouldn't touch that thing with a ten foot pole. Just my taste.

Yeah he does some great work he also used to get bodies custom made by a sister company or possibly the same company under a different name  8)

I've been watching them for over a year or so now and being a bit on the fence but now that its coming to the end of the line i think ill have to take a risk

It's a shame he's closing down.  They're not quite my kind of thing, but they're nice to look at.

You could get one and be extravagant and use some of your stuff from your treasure trove of parts :D

I think that out of what's left, the body you posted would be the number 1 for me! (but obviously I shall leave it for your :) ), then it'd be the pink/green strat HSH body, then the SSS green/black.... very very tempted to buy one of these before they're gone!

Right after exchanging a few emails with Alan @ OOTS it looks like this is definitely going ahead im just awaiting some bridge spacing measurements and also quotes from various places for clear coating.

Im still fairly undecided on the neck but i think i want a reverse hockey stick type possibly that has a very thin satin finish that will easily wear away and get grubby.

Pickup colours i haven't chosen yet but im pretty sure it will either be a miracle man set or something from elsewhere. I was going to go for the cold sweat set then remembered that the mids were far too polite sounding the last time i had some.

How much is the clear coating costing ? Do you know where you're getting the neck from ?

I am sooo tempted with one of these.

I havent got any quotes back on the clearcoating yet.

And i think im going to have a kramer type neck made as all the ones you can buy have locking nuts.

Feline explain this to me once - with those Kramer type necks the tuning pegs means the strings don't stay parallel after they go over the nut, infact the spread is quite wide. apparently you almost need a locking nut to get the strings right.

Unless you have a hardtail, of course.  Even then there's a bit of pressure for the E strings to pop out of the nut (which I guess you must also find on your Vs, sometimes?)

are you thinking hockey stick?
surely the beak style kramer headstock won't do that.

Ah yes i changed my mind from the hockey stick type to the beak type like so

I always liked that shape, one of the better Strat varations.  retty similar to Suhr and Tom Anderson.

Ive actually got a little bit of an update on this.

I got an email from Chris @ bowfinishing. Thanks Jonathan for the recommendation!

He said its almost ready now and im super excited.

heres a pic of the clear coating almost finished.

Now i need to decide on the rest of the bits. So far ive decided the bridge will be a kahler that im grabbing from fellow forumite jacksonrr!

I got a 560 body from OutOfThisSwirld, the finish itself was perfect (clear coated) but the finish was so thick that none of the parts or neck actually fitted so I had to return it! I think that was a one off though and the chap refunded me no problems.

That sucks Lew.

This one wasn't clear coated and the finish itself isnt overly thick so i'll be fine luckily.

it also seems that OOTS arent closing now. It could be something to do with the mini swirl craze i appear to have started on the MG forum

Yea, it was a one off I'm sure. Mind me asking how much the greenswirl set you back?
