Pah!it's more of a post 1990 thing - the swirling on guitars (passion and warfare came out in 1990)- although it was popular in the 70s on other objects-in fact they sold a kit for kids to swirl their toys with.Technicalities aside - it looks like fun!

Wow. Just looking at their site. Some of those designs are actually quite subtle, and I could see myself building them.
