Title: Best Noise Gate
Post by: Valisch on March 09, 2012, 07:37:25 PM
Ok so I'm looking for a noise gate pedal that will help quiet my incoming Lee Jackson Metaltronix M-1000 head that i just won on eBay :D  It seems to be a very noisy amp from what i hear.  So I figure I'll need a noise gate.
Let it be known that I have never used a noise gate in the past so it can't be overly complicated. Also would it be better to run it in front of the amp or in the effects loop, or both?

Boss Noise supressor. Tried, tested and used by many.

I used to have the Boss NS2 it was alright but it wasnt the best.

I now use a diy MXR smart gate which is a heck of a lot better.

My issues with the NS2 was that it opened and closed quite slowly and also even on max supression it didnt remove all the noise just the majority of it and i actually have a fairly quiet amp.

I have a Boss NS-2.

I feel the Boss is great when it's in front of the amp, where I swear by it, but I feel in the loop it doesn't work very well (Toe Knee has described the problems in the loop. If your amp is noisy, then it's not a good choice. In my case, my amp is rather quiet and the Boss works great to remove the noise from pedals and pickups, even single coil hum. To be fair to it, the NS-2 is not designed for the effects loop in the first place (according to Guitarist).

I did find it a lot better in front of the amp and the loop feature of the pedal itself was great for running noisy OD's and such through.

I do like the Idea of the looping option. anyone have experience with the ISP Decimater pedals? I've heard good things about them too.

The ISP is great if you are playing really modern metal but i find for some stuff it is quite heavy handed with the way it gates which can be really annoying at times.

But the actual noise supression it offers is fantastic.

are there any pedals out there that are pure gates and don't do any kind of filtering?

Would having the pedal set up like this add to its reduction capabilities since its both in front and in the effects loop of the amp?

yes it would.

The way that works is in front of the amp it removes guitar/pedal noise and then the section that goes in the loop removes thermal hiss & general preamp noise that you get with valve amps.

Its pretty clever and a great setup.

ISP Decimator all the way. The G-String model is extremely flexible.

I've got an ISP G String and it works well and is simple to use.

I own the NS2, and I have it wired to supress the noise in both the loop and infront of the amp in a 4-way style wiring. It does the job, but I'm considering trying out the MXR Smart Gate, which I've heard is meant to be very good.

The smart gate is a great upgrade from the NS2

With the NS2 it's known to suck tone, but with the MXR, I hear that it only shuts off sound when not playing, which apparantly makes it a true gate, as to the NS2 which supresses the noise at all times. If you follow my drift? Thing is, how would I hook it up to gate both in front, and the fxloop of the amp? Or would it require 2?

unfortunately it would require two however if you try with just your NS2 in the loop it should still remove all the noise its just a bit less convenient than getting rid of some of it beforehand.

If you are handy witha  soldering iron you could build 2 far cheaper than you can buy 1.

There are also some great mods that give you more control so you have
Attenuation
Attack
Sensitivity
Release controls.

It makes it a heck of a lot more flexible

That sounds pretty awesome with the mods. As i said, my NS2 does the job, but I'd prefer something that could maybe give me more of my tone. I'd obviously try to demo one first as there's no point spending £100 on a new one when there's not much difference with my setup.

Yup its always best to try one.

I need to either get mine back or build a new one with all the mods as im missing it.

My NS-2 only sucks tone in the effects loop.

The NS2 does everything I need when it comes to a noise gate and i wouldnt be without it for playing live

Interesting :)  A lot of people have different opinions. Is it really all just personal taste?  Perhaps i should buy them all and see which one i like best.  Musician's Friend's 45 day return policy could be of some use there :)

At the end of the day it really does boil down to personal tastes and what works best for differing situations.

The reason i like the MXR is because you cant actually tell its there until its not.

I will however be building a heavily modded version for extra flexiblity and also a few ISPs in the near future so i guess i could do some shootouts of sorts. It's a shame i sold my NS2

Another vote for the ISP here. Contrary to what Tony might tell you, I sometimes dabble in a bit of teh blues, and I find it works very well, although my experience with using it for metal is much more extensive, haha

I'm sure I've posted this about a bazillion times, but ISP Decimator ProRackG.

And then move onto the next part of your chain to tweak.

Go $%&# yourself :D
I actually think it's the loop on my amp y'know. I've sent it back once already and they said it had loop problems.

You should try it with another amp then :D

Because if it is adding noise its a pretty useless noise gate :D

All fine since I swapped out those bad power valves ;)

I've tried a few noise gates over the past few years, none of them are perfecg but the closest to it is definitely the ISP.

i find the modded mxrs to be a lot more usable. Purely because whilst the ISP is fantastic it is a bit heavy handed.

I like to be able to set the attack, threshold & attenuation individually for best results. And for the circuit to be completely off once the signal passes above a certain threshold.

The ISP is fantastic though

any pedal adds noise
never played a noise gate that didn't add a subtle noise despite of cutting all the noise that comes from other pedals before it
guess that's related to interference from radio waves, lamps, computers, other pedals, amps, and coming from the outlets through our power supplies
I can hear the extra noise in most pedals when I turn them on
