Well for starters here is what I'm really considering. Flamed Maple Top on Chambered Makore. It looks gorgeous (more info below pics):

I'm not too familiar with Warmoth Les Pauls, so hopefully someone can help me with this. What is the fret access like, as well as how do the bolt on Les Pauls sound tonally?
Another thing I'm interesting in knowing is, on my other Warmoths, I've had the 720 Strat mod, and I believe this one doesn't have that mod. How will it affect the guitar? Would it really be an issue?
Also what do people think of Makore, as I'm really unfarmiliar with this? And how does the chambering really "help" the tone, etc?
And finally, what do people think of it looks wise? I just think it's sexy, and the wood on the back of the body just looks utterly stunning!
-
It looks really good to me. I'm affraid that's the only thing I can comment on.
-
Same here, looks stunning... :D
... can't help on the rest of it.
-
Looks great bro, I can't really help any further, besides that I have an all mahogany bolt-on Saint Blues Mississippi Bluesmaster loaded with Mules. The body is a little slimmer then a Les Paul, strings go through body and the neck is more of a beefy telecaster. It sounds like a punchy Les Paul. Perhaps not as deep and warm. So not exactly the real thing.

I absolutely love it. I just kind of want a bit of re-assurance before I buy it as I'll be buying other things to make up the guitar.
Talking about other things, regarding the neck, I was thinking of maybe a naked Rosewood neck, but I saw on another thread about there being problems shipping rosewood. Can someone please explain to me the situation on this, as I didn't even know there was a problem until yesterday?

Just given the link to the threadas it may be more practical to answer my question on there instead.
Cheers,
Mike

Fret access is like a Strat or Tele, because that's how it's constructed! Same thing soundwise, essentially, but of course the different materials will come into play, and the tune-o-matic bridge.
It won't sound or respond exactly like a set-neck Les Paul, but if the neck's mahogany (or similar) it will take you more in that direction.

The only thing the 720 Mod does is make the neck pocket a bit deeper so the neck sits closer to the body if you're not using a scratchplate. It's a cosmetic thing, no effect on tone.
LP bodies don't have that option, but they do have an angled pocket to create enough string height/angle over the body to work with the tune-o-matic bridge. I don't know whether this leaves a gap between the end of the fretboard and the body - I would guess it probably doesn't, because they're not expecting anyone to want a scratchplate on an LP.
Also what do people think of Makore, as I'm really unfarmiliar with this? And how does the chambering really "help" the tone, etc?
Absolutely no idea about makore, but from the descriptions it should give a warm tone similar to mahogany. As for the chambering, the way they do it - with lots of small holes, not one or two big ones - is mainly to reduce weight, not to change the tone. So it doesn't sound like a hollowbody, but acoustically they do seem a bit more lively and resonant, which I like. Of course it'll vary a lot between individual bodies.
And finally, what do people think of it looks wise? I just think it's sexy, and the wood on the back of the body just looks utterly stunning!
I think it looks great! I hope you'll choose a nice neck to go with it! :D

Thanks for that Philly Q, really appreciated.
And regarding the neck, I've been looking at Raw Rosewood necks, ut I', a little confused as to situation with importing/exporting Rosewood at the moment. I may not even get rosewood yet. I may get something slightly brighter. We'll see I guess :)

What would people suggest as a neck though? Would be cool to have ideas?
Also what hardware colour and pickup colour? I was thinking maybe gold hardware? And how about Zebra Pickups?
-
I don't know about neck wood, but I think it needs a dark-coloured fretboard with cream binding.
It would be cool to have a colour-matched headstock too, but they'll only do that if you're getting a neck and body painted at the same time.
On the other hand, I also think it would be cool to draw attention to the fact it's an LP with a bolt-on neck, and stick a one-piece maple neck on it....
I totally agree about the gold hardware and zebras. And cream pickup rings.

I've managed to find a Rosewood neck with Ebony Board which matches pretty good, so that's an option. I was thinking about maple, but I'm very paranoid about 1-piece maple necks. I was also thinking quatersawn, but that kinda makes me a bit worried too. Also, Ilike the idea of having a Les Paul with a Raw Neck :)

Here's a question for you Philly. I'm really liking Walnut atm, it seems to be a good colour match for the Body Wood. What I wanted toask though was, what are Warmoth's Gloss Necks like in terms of speed?
-
In terms of speed?? I can only play slow.
I've never bought a gloss finished Warmoth neck, most of the ones I've bought have been unfinished. I've had two satin finished necks, but they use nitro for the satin finishes and urethane for gloss.
Judging by the body finishes, their gloss finishes are very hard and very shiny, "glass-like" in fact. I guess it's possible a gloss neck would feel a bit sticky, but it's all a question of what kind of feel you prefer. I did ask Wez V about walnut necks quite recently, he said they're particularly good with oil finishes.
-
Would I have to Oil the neck myself? or can you phone Warmoth and request it? I only have experience with Satin necks. I know you can get Walnut with Satin, but I don't know how Walnut would react regarding warping, etc.
-
No, they won't do oil finishes, you'd have to do it yourself (or pay someone else to do it!)
I don't see why there'd be any problem with a satin (or gloss) finish on walnut.

Ah, the very thing I've been thinking about! A bolt-on LP, and those woods loke GREAT.
I love the LP tone, but I also love the variety of Fender tones. I don't like TOO much midrange honk, which some Les pauls have. I'm after a different thick tone, with some airyness and still a very firm midrange. I'd guess that that's where the chambering also helps.
And why bolt-on? For a while now I've thought that the marriage of telecaster punch and LP thickness would absolutely rule. Hence, a tele on steroids -> a bolt-on LP. Now the neck for me would be different matter. I would (or probably in the future, WILL) most likely choose a mahogany neck with a rw fretboard, but 25.5 inch scale lenght.
After saying that, the LP scale lenght and/or maple as a neck material would be under consideration too.
Be sure to keeps us updated on this one, I'm genuinely interested 8)

I do actually have an LP body and neck in my Warmoth parts collection.
But it's a flat-top, swamp ash body and maple/rosewood neck so it won't really have any LP-like qualities. It'll just be a Tele (or hardtail Strat) in an LP shape.

Well just weighing up all options at the moment. Been planning a custom build for the last 6months. I'm kind of treating it like a tattoo, if I still like it in a few months, then I know it's for keeps. I've seen that Les Paul on the Warmoth site for a few months now, and I keep returning to ot. I just love the look of Makore. I'm also weighing up price, import fees, tax, delivery etc. At the moment the Warmoth price is between £1100 and £1300 with hardware, so I'm contemplating whether to just get the exact same guitar and colour built by a luthier, but with set or neck thru design. That would set me back another £500, but it would mean I get the pick of the crop regarding woods, and I can also have a 3 or 5 pieceneck for added stability. I'm just looking round for quotes at the moment. It's like a life and death situation this, trying to build my dream guitar haha
