Title: Strymon Timeline
Post by: hunter on April 20, 2012, 09:03:19 AM

Just got myself one of those pedals and man, I can't believe how good it sounds. It's expensive, but I cannot imagine that someone could design a better floor based delay pedal.

Now I wanna have their new creation, the Flint (Tremolo/Reverb). The sound clips sound mouth watering.

These pedals sound like they're seriously good bits of kit. If I used delay a whole lot more I'd be looking into getting one ASAP.

The Timeline is insanely great. Inspiration in a box I say!

For my normal playing I tend to prefer the duck delay. Subtle delay most of the time and strong effect to bridge the silence.
For Gilmour like stuff either the tape or the digital with filter and mostly grit set rather high to make it like an analog delay.

And make sure that you try the low-fi set to 2ms all the way wet -> Low-fi machine!
70s clock radio with a bit of vinyl on a cleansound and play the beginning of Wish you were here!

So many great sounds and settings...

I just need to get me a midi cable to update the firmware so the tap tempo is not that bloody precise....

I've been looking into this one and an El Capistan. How easy is it to use in a livesituation going quick through the banks?

Yeah indeed. I don't like Duck so much because it's so hard always to get the sensitivity levels right (I have mine in the loop and the send signal gets hotter if I turn volume on the amp up).

What I use mostly instead is "Digital" with quite some "Smear" dialed in, Smear cuts of the attack of the delay trails, so while your sound gets atmospheric, the delay doesn't get in the way as the repeats are kinda blended into it.

It really is amazing, I haven't even started to experiment much with filter mod and sequenced delays and all the stuff. But oh my, what an awesome lead sound I get with Digital and Smear, sounds totally like Gary Moore's rack stuff in the 80s!!

easy enough. to step bank up you hit middle and right button, step bank down you use middle and left button. The switches are close enough so it's easy if you have the right shoes.

Each bank has two sounds only, so like rhythm and lead or something. To me it makes sense. Plus you can add +3dB boost or take away -3dB of cut, which gives you 6dB headroom for solos if you like. Plenty that is.

The way you can have patch names shown is also very cool. You can have the bank showing as you step up, and then once you choose a preset the name will scroll through, or you can show BPM or MS instead. Pretty versatile and clear.

Thanks for the explanation. I just don't have very big feet... I will try one soon. I like the sounds in the demo's, some are really awesome.

Ok, it's pricey, but sturdy build and loads of delays and features.

True. Flint will be awesome, too. Only the reverb side alone would be worth it, but with the Trem, will be amazing. I assume it'll be in the same range as El Cap and Orbit etc, so 279€

Strymon Delays are unbelievable. I tried the TImeline, EL Capistan and Brigadier recently and went for the El Cap, purely because of it's smaller footprint as it was going on my small board.

But there's a problem.. It's made the Vox Time Machine on my big board sound awful   so i just ordered a Brigadier... Maybe i should have  saved for the Timeline  :(

I would love to have a go on the strymon delays (and the other pedals as well). I'll have to see if I can find a dealer close to me.

How do you think it compares to the Eventide Timefactor? They look spec-wise virtually the same, but keep hearing that there's quite a difference.

Very cool H, I tried one a while back along with the El Cap and Brigadier. All awesome but I felt the Timeline was just too awesome and I would have spent too much time tweaking and messing and went with the El Cap.

congrats, pricey yes but i've not read anywhere anything bad said about them, which is very unusual with the net.
i looked at their reverb (blue sky) and cheaped out with the tc hof.
looking at their delays though for a replacement for my ancient boss delay.

Well I would not say virtually the same...
Just had a look at the Eventide and from reading let me point out some things that set them apart (beware there might be one or two things wrong I just looked at the Timefactor product page, donīt know if everything is mentioned there).
Timefactor: 9 Delay + Looper
Timeline: 12 Delays + Looper

-So the Timeline has more delays. The TF seems to be missing things like the Ice and Lo-fi delay.
-Also the TL has twice the banks (100 with two presets on each bank).
-The TL basecally includes a full low-fi machine and can also be used as a chorus or trem for example if you donīt have dedicated pedals for that.
-The TL has an effects loop for the only the delay signal (if you use mono mode the right outputs) cause 12 delays is not enough!^^
-Also the TL has twice the banks (100 with two presets on each bank).
-The TF has more knobs, but the as the TL has a few too plus one multi function knob which can choose multiple varying parameters depending on which delay you use it has effectivly as much or more.
-The TL has true bypass and a buffered one (choosable) and I can really recommend the buffered one, as you will hear no difference, exept when you use really long cables in which case the buffered sounds better!!!

So that is my short (and probably biased xD) comparison of the features, not the sound.

The TF has a switch for Inst/Line level which is great, pity they didn't add that to the TL.
The TL has programmable by preset +/- 3dB of Level adjustment though

From all people who had both they all say TL sounds better, different league. Eventide is very analytical. Strymon has mojo and character, without losing clarity.
