Just saw this on Facebook - am really tempted. Curious to know which production BKP they are most like.
“The design is based on a pair of vintage humbuckers I made for one of my own guitars recently. I have enjoyed the voicing so much I thought the pair would be perfect to mark the 10th anniversary of Bare Knuckle Pickups.
I've wound the coils by hand with 42 AWG plain enamel wire keeping the wind asymmetrical between the two coils and then using a rough cast Alnico II magnet which I've aged. Both bridge and neck humbuckers are wound differently to optimise the tone and balance of their respective positions on the guitar.
Tonally they bear all the hallmarks of a classic Bare Knuckle; touch sensitive dynamic response, clarity and beautiful vocal delivery.” Tim Mills, 2013
-
Yeah, saw them too. Alnico II is always very interresting. There is little info, but I am convinced they are great^^
-
but I am convinced they are great
Of that there is little doubt! :D
-
as they're alnico 2 i'm guessing they're a great vintage blues/rock humbucker that can clean up well for jazz. wonder how they'd do in a full hollow...
-
A bit more info, when asked which production model they were closest to:
"Probably Stormy Monday humbuckers in so much as they're AII but these have more output while the aged magnets help keep control of the bottom end."
-
Stormy Mondays with more output? I bet the neck pickup sounds good.
So is this set actually going to be available to buy? I don't have Facebook.
-
It is out right now in the shop.https://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_126&products_id=522&zenid=3783963df7f011f9101bc0614b83c1d5 (https://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_126&products_id=522&zenid=3783963df7f011f9101bc0614b83c1d5)
Limited to 100.
Think they would look nice under you bed dontcha?
-
Hmmm, with only 100 sets available I don't think I should deprive someone far more worthy than me by keeping a set under my bed. :|

Your bed is like a part of BKP history by now. Somewhat of a mixture of a museum and timecapsul. A monument the gear obsession of us all really.
In a way I wound find it actually soothing to know that there is one under your bed xD
God I have been here far too long...
-
I was going to say I wouldn't know what guitar to put them in..... then I realised I'd never get round to actually putting them in a guitar anyway.....
P.S. I've just noticed Tim's official announcements in the News bit of the forum.

Strangly, I feel the same. Philly's bed is like the British library of guitar parts and he is the kindly archivist.

The Archivist, good title for a documentary! Wow, is that... is that... a Stormy Monday 2004??? A good year, wasn't it? Somebody bring a camera...
-
Man I wanne fly over there right now and shoot that! You could make a great miniseries documentary out of that.
Each week Philly pulls something out from under the bed and talks about whatever he got. Storys, history, all the good stuff. Put in some archive shots, mayb some remote interviews with people like Tim or the guys from Warmoth. Finish it off with some old guy with a low voice narrating it while piano and cello music playing in the background to lend it a bit of gravitas.
Bäm, you got a programm!
And as the season finally we film him actually putting on of those parts to use! The papers would go mad.
We love you Philly!
-
yes - we have 6 sets ordered up - one for Kiichi and Tom and I both want a set each leaving 3 sets for "worthy projects"

Include interviews with Ebay buyers of his artifacts who have owned items temporarily prior to Philly buying them back.
The end segment would consist of getting Philly out of his house on a pretext while a team assemble all his parts into finished guitars... (which he can then sell on ebay) prior to buying more parts :P
(We do love you Philly :))
-
Got the email and was quite excited, looked at the bank balance and decided I couldn't really justify it. Got home and there's a cheeky little tax rebate waiting, pickups ordered! Don't know whether they'll go in my LP or SG yet, though!

Guys, I'm genuinely touched. Those (most excellent) posts were like a late birthday present. :D

I actually assume that I am gonna pull-a-philly™ on these PUs.
On one hand none of my current axes got empty space and on the other none of them really would befit a pickup of this gravitude.
So I shall for now pay tribute to the curator of parts of the ages and meanwhile start thinking about what I want my first custom axe to be. Then I gotta see how the first year of uni does affect my money and maybe if I am lucky get a first payment down on a Feline Custom I can put these beautis in.
I actually have been thinking mostly about what PUs I want in my first custom and then these come along and seem perfect as I really was between the Stormy, Blue note and the PG Blues.
Now I am thinking these in some sort of a Fender scale Les Paul with 24 frets, but sides that rather classic design should be really swell...so many things to think about and research =)
-
I bet these would be great in my 339. I do like the stock pickups but you know how the grass is always greener? Thats about how I am feeling at the moment.
-
having been utterly sure and steadfast for the last while that I couldn't afford any new gear, I have just ordered a set of these :)
I'm putting these 10th anniversary BKPs in my Gibson 100th anniversary flying V, both of which were limited to 100 units. I had been hmming and hahing for a long time about whether I should change the pickups in it, but when I saw these it just felt right. hopefully the engraving won't stand out too much, but it should sound wonderful! :)
-

Ah, but do you fancy carrying out that rewiring job?

Could actually almost do that, but I wanne enjoy that new pickup smell and look at them from time to time to keep me inspired to plan the guitar and practise playing so I can justify actually getting a custom ;)
Use them as somewhat of a carrot on a stick kinda thing.
I would guess realisticly the earliest possible time to put down a payment and get things going would be like 9-10 months from now. Really gotta see how my bank acount shapes out first. Should give me time to plan and practice so all is good.
Will take me a lot of time alone to figure out the neck I want. And when I am done planning I might even think about flying out to London for a weekend to drop by and get the final order in, looking at some of your suggestions to see how they would fit me and stuff....all in the future.
I also really wonder how many of these PUs will fall into the hands of forum members here.

Well I just ordered a set. As a fan of Stormy Monday's, PG Blues and having an AII Mule set too, I know I'll like these. The question is which guitar will get them!
-
I knew you'd get a set, Phil. And rightly so! :)
-

Pretty sure that mine will end up in my LP-- will have to shift the MQ and Black Dog to the SG, but I don't think that'll be a bad thing... MQ in an SG? Don't mind if I do! Providing i'm still working at this studio when I get the pickups, i'll get some nice recordings done to hopefully do them some justice.
-
I was wondering if anyone tried the Aftermath in HSS start and can share his opinion?
Really liked the pickup but I don't have any idea how it will sound on my Strat
-

What does the AII mule set sound like? I would guess a bit mellower than the standard Mule?
-
After e-mailing Tim regarding these pups as I am using A4 Mules at the moment for the stuff I am covering which is Classic rock. Hope this helps anyone who was wondering, seems like they will cover a lot of ground
they're quite different actually. Being AII powered they're very much
sweeter in the high end and with the aged magnets, extremely clear and
detailed. Not quite so much power as The Mule but .more than enough for
the majority of applications and easily man enough for hard rock even.
It's not a case of 'better' than The Mule, it's more a complimentary
vintage voice and tonal colour. If you like that classic Kossoff vocal
delivery, you'll love these.
-
That description makes me even more exited for these than I already am =)
I loooooooooooooooove sweet highs. Added clarity never hurts as well....sides showing all your feeble mistakes.
Still want more info, but these are shaping up to be the PUs of my dreams.
Thank god I ordered a set....these babys unpotted will be sooo wicked :D
-
Well i've just gone and ordered a set of these......now I just need to stop coming on here and forget about it for a few weeks till the postman arrives .......I hope he does arrive....GAS is a terrible affliction
-
I also ordered a set of these, unpotted (raw nickel cover).
The Kossoff reference sold me plus the info I got from Tim:
"yes, this set is perfect for a tone similar to Slash on AFD"
(Btw, hi guys - BKP newbie here :D )
-
God damn it, this is not helping me not to buy a set!
Am usually very much a high output pickup guy, but I have been gasing for some low output pups for quite a while and been hesitating...these sound right up my street...sigh...
-
"yes, this set is perfect for a tone similar to Slash on AFD"
They just keep getting better and better the more I hear. It is like Tim though: Mhhh what would Kiichi like and made a PU from that.
It´s sweet, clear, AII, does Slashtones....OH MY GOD WHY HAVE THEY NOT ARRIVED YET!!!!
Just waiting for the next piece of info to completly loose my shite.
-
Must admit I am getting increasingly tempted, even though I'm generally not the biggest fan of AII humbuckers, or of Mr Slash..... I wonder how many sets have sold already? :?
They sound like they would have to go in a Les Paul or maybe a 335.
-
I wonder how many sets have sold already? :?
On FB they posted "They´re almost gone" yesterday.

I got them for a PRS style hollowbody that was quite bright. They mellowed it out really nicely but still keep a good note definition and can get a very nice crunch tone when pushing the amp. I haven't tried them in anything else as they were perfect for the guitar.
-
People need to buy my pedals for sale out of the Seconds Out room so I can afford some of these damnit!
-
They actually sound like they'll be really good and I think the bridge model could work well in one of my guitars - pity they are only available as a limited edition with that engraved cover. I wonder if Tim will ever release a 'normal' version of these pickups.
-
They dont really appeal to me to be honest, but I would love to hear what you guys have to say about them once youve got them installed in your axes
-
They sound like they would have to go in a Les Paul or maybe a 335.
That was my basic impression from what Tim told me. My guitars are a bit brighter than a Les Paul and he didn't seem to think they would sound big enough for what I wanted.

I have got a couple of guitars that would suit them pretty nicely (I think)..... but I do have a nagging feeling I'd be buying more because they're a special edition than because I really want those pickups.
-
You may have a couple of guitars that would suit them but the same could be said for most of what's apparently under your bed! :D
-

I asked on facebook if there will perhaps someday be a variation of them for regular sale. His replay was when they are gone, they are gone.
-

The guitars under the bed are all bolt-ons. I wouldn't put 'em in a bolt-on.
There are lots of stray pickups too, of course, so the 10th Anniversaries wouldn't be strictly "necessary".....
-
I could resist no longer - they sound like exactly what I am after at the moment, so a set are ordered! Didn't want to risk missing them given they are apparently nearly all gone. Went for brushed nickel, potted.
-
Went for brushed nickel, potted.
Interesting. Please do post a pic of the pickups with those covers when they arrive. I thought about going this route but decided for raw nickel instead.

Philly's pups are 10th Anniversary Bedknuckles
-
I might commission them to do another 10th Anniversary set when they've been under my bed for 10 years.
-
my preference would definitely be for nickel covers, i don't normally like gold covers, but the guitar i intend to put these in is all gold. I hope they sound great in it, because i don't want to move them! but i'm sure they will be excellent :)

just have in mind that raw nickel gets heavily aged in like 3 months of moderate use
the raw nickel look stays consistent for much longer

Would that be like "aged to perfection"?

You could call your ebay trades "Sleeper Stock" & and upcharge.. "This item had spent 10 years bathed in the dreams of a guitarist..
Measure your snoring frequency and say it has been run through "1.000.000 human reasonance vibration cycles"

Ours arrived yesterday
All the same, or different covers, leg lengths etc?
I really want to see a set in a guitar, still not sure if all the etching etc is a bit OTT.
-
Etching is too OTT for me too Philly, otherwise I might have been tempted. Could have tried to order a 'plain' set though I suppose...

I might've gone for an uncovered set or plain covers, but I don't think the option was there, Dave.
Which is fair enough in a way, since there'd be no way of actually identifying them as 10th Anniversaries - unless maybe they had special engraved baseplates (which I don't think they have).

Tom had a chrome set with sort legs and wide spacing for a Floyd Equipped guitar.
The rest were long leg, vintage spaced
PS - baseplates are laser etched once again rather than stamped - like the early days
-
In their new home! Not played through them yet, but will give them a quick blast when I get home :)
-
Here's another that's a bit better quality.
They sound rather nice! Appear to be lower output than the MQ and Black Dog that were in there before, and smoother sounding. Coil-split neck sounds heavenly, and really nice blended in with the bridge (in humbucker mode). I'll try and get some recordings done at work at some point.
-
Mine arrived today 8)
I was a bit concerned about the ott etching as well, but the guitar i'm putting them in is anything but subtle!
unfortunately, i'm not too sure now when i'll get them installed, as my house currently contains a 1 week old baby boy :) he arrived a little early, and most other things have taken a back seat for now
-

Nice pics of the pickups everyone, but more importantly, congratulations blue! :D

Thanks very much Philly :) don't want to hijack the thread, so maybe I'll "reveal" him elsewhere

Cool, a NBD! Congratulations sir!
Most important question: Does it have good tone?
Wonder how one would best imitate a baby on the guitar and if there is a application for it whatsoever. Well, now you can study the sound and find that out. =)
Anyhow...
Really looking forward to more placed pictures of these PUs and first sound impressions. The etching is pretty in your face, but it certainly can work I feel. With a LP with nicely figured maple cap with a rather natural paintjob enhancing the contrast on the figure this can especially shine I feel.

Congrats on the baby :)
I got my tracking number yesterday - am excite! However, the pickups are going to the UK and I'm in Beijing until Christmas...one step at a time...

What a sickener.....but at least there will be another nice christmas present to unwrap :D
-
Well mine are on their way :D
-
Well they have arrived. They look great with the brushed nickel covers, not too 'blingy' for want of a better word so they should look fine in my plaintop.I'll post some pics when I have them fitted :D.
-
Congrats on the new arrival!
and of course the best way to imitate a baby on guitar is with a wah crybaby pedal-gets very close to the tone of my 7 month old
-
Yeah, mine came today from Feline!
They look amazing and the etching is much nicer in person imho.
Snapped a quick shot of them. Sorry, its not by best work and they seem green as I had leaves above so they reflext in the chrom covers.
Now I just need a guitar I can put them in...well all in due time =)

Are they the 'Greeny' Buckers :D and I hope they don't end up under the bed like Philly's stuff :D
-
Well they work for me. :D Glad I went with the brushed nickel I think they fit well with the plaintop. I tried them today when I picked it up through a Suhr Badger 18..........oh my word what clarity, lovely cleans, also some great tones when adding some gain, a lot smoother than the Mules I had in. Sorry i'm not much help in the description side of things but I think i've said it all, I think you tell I am well chuffed with them :D. To those others lucky enough to have managed to get these if you have'nt got yours installed I guarantee you will not be dissapointed I know I wasn't. Mr. Mills if you read this another great set of pickups in my guitar thankyou, it's just a shame that not everyone will get to enjoy these.

FINALLY got my 10th Anniversary Pups installed this week after them sitting at my parents' house for months waiting for me to get back from China. Wasn't sure which guitar to put them in but in the end chose to go with my Seth Baccus Single Cut and my god it turned out to be a good choice. The guitar had previously got a Nailbomb/Mississippi Queen in it so quite a change. The guitar itself is mahogany body/neck and rosewood fretboard.
I have to say that I really really like the new pups. Nearly all of my other pickups are at the hotter end of the spectrum, but I was struck as to quite how good these sound. Incredibly open and airy, articulate and clear. I know that BKPs are clear, but even my Nailbomb sounded pretty compressed in comparison. They are bright and sit really well in the Mahogany/Rosewood, not at all harsh, nicely rounded. The neck pickup on cleans is beautiful and I have it wired in series/parallel on a push/pull tone pot for added versatility.
The bridge pup is great also, has more poke than I expected and certainly good for anything up to Hard Rock, tightens up a bit with a boost, but not what I would use for Metal really. I spent a good hour in GnR heaven!
Looks-wise I'm impressed, I wasn't totally convinced about the engraving when I ordered, but especially with the brushed nickel now that they are installed it looks pretty subtle in most lights.
Hugely impressed, but now looking at which other guitars I can experiment with more low output BKPs!
Pics to follow...

Niiiiice. Always cool to hear more one these. Now I am debating if I should already add this to the review thread....
Seems to be 10th Anniversary week around here! :drink:

I never really put any thought into it before, but do lefty guitars use normal pup or would the polepieces etc, be upside down?

They're just regular pickups, the only exception I can think of being Strat pickups with staggered magnets, left-handed versions of those are available. :)

I never really put any thought into it before, but do lefty guitars use normal pup or would the polepieces etc, be upside down?

Yep, the single coils threw me a bit.
Nice axe btw, oil finish is always kinda cooool. 8)

Thanks!
Philly got it spot on - I've got left hand staggered Trilogies in my Strat, but the rest are all regular ones.

I've heard of right-handed players using left-handed Strat pickups (and a reverse-slanted bridge pickup) to try to get more authentic Hendrix sounds.
Fender made a model called the Voodoo Strat for a little while, that was a RH Strat with LH electronics and a reverse headstock. I don't know if it came in a left-handed version!

What for, lefties should just buy a righty and turn it upside down. :P

I had a voodoo strat but when I bought it, it was modded with Seymour Duncan HSS configuration

But then you'd have a right-handed Strat intended to sound like an upside-down left-handed Strat which would actually sound like a right-way-up right-handed Strat.
I think. :?
(That's assuming they re-string it, rather than playing bass strings down like Albert King)

If it's good enough for Jimi, then it's good enough for us. :D
