Hmm, could do that sound with a JCM800 with an overdrive, a lot of heavier bands are now reverting back to one after stints with modern higher gain amps like Orange/Mesa, etc. Even I'm tempted to go back to a JCM800 cranked!
The dual rectifier has that tighter sorta grainy crunch sound, maybe channel 2 with a boost?
And I like the ladies in the second video link haha.

You could probably get that sort of sound with a Peavey JSX. There was one advertised here recently for under $900. Considering that they were originally $2500+ that means that prices have dropped. They are a good reliable amp, but can do with some biasing and maybe a revalve. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohEZTGjEVss

Good and interesting thoughts, thanks.
Kruspe (Rammstein/Emigrate) and the Nightwish guitarist both use Mesa Rectifiers. But I'm not convinced a Mesa is the only way to do that sound.
I've been puzzling over this for a while. I do love that tight gainy crunch! I've been looking at various ways to update my sound for a while for some new material I'm working on.
Of course I've tried quite a few pedals with my JCM800 over the years. Anything I do with it sounds very classic. However it does sound godly, and is very 'feel good' to play. It might be the pedals I've tried, or maybe the way I set it up.
I also heard about the Wampler Triple Wreck pedal, but I listened to some clips and it seems to sound very fizzy.

Anything in particular you would suggest?

Yes! But its disturbing the way the morph into grizzly metal guys. Probably the effect they wanted!

Maybe a Zakk Wylde overdrive? The tubescreamer type ones seem a bit too metal-ly but its a matter of taste.
I have a Wampler Triple Wreck, but I don't use that as a boost, more of a pedal into a clean amp to give me my overdrive sound. Useful when rehearsing in places with cr@p backline or my main gig amp goes down on the night.

Not sure about an overdrive. I went through my selection again tonight and it all still ends up sounding more or less like a Marshall.
edit: I'll check some clips of the ZW though. At this point I'm open minded to all kinds of suggestions.

As the guy says in the video it has since been reissued as the XXX 2 after the endorsement deal with Satriani ended. Which is a totally different amp from the original XXX, which is now available as the 3120, just to make things confusing.
Personally I think the JSX looks sexier than its reboot

What do you think about the 5150/6505 line? It is hard to say on youtube, but listening to youtube they don't seem too far from what I'm after. Principally, I could get an old 5150 with the cool block logo, or they also have the 6505 mini which would maybe be more practical.
Though I must say the clips I heard of the XXX/JSX do sound closer to what I want. And, as you say, are a bit of a bargain on the used market.
In truth any of the amps discussed would be closer than the JCM800. Its true I can get the right amount of gain and tightness with pedal, but it still has that open/punky British sounding mid range rather than that thick modern American one.

Sounds like you might like the 6534+, which is what I own. I think it is a great amp and in the USA you can find them for good prices. Even here in Australia there are a few good deals on them still. More mids and more punky than a 6505.
The same guy who did the other video on the JSX did one on the 6534+

For all 6505 series amps an ISP Decimator is pretty much mandatory. I have the G-String unit (the more expensive one which has a sensor to detect the end of 'tails'). An EQ pedal is also a good investment. People tend to use a tubescreamer to 'tighten' the 6L6 models (6505/6505+) but I have found this to be redundant on the EL34 model. A clean boost like my MXR / CAE boost / linedriver can be good if you want boost but the 'hump' of a tubescreamer is not needed. The bottom end of a 534+ is quite tight and it has more mids. I think it is the closest out of the 6505 range to the JSX.
Here's a video of guy playing 7-string BKP Juggernauts - djent style or course - through one (3:25):

This video compares it to the 6505+ ... the guy is a bit of a douchebag but it gives some idea of the difference.

I prefer this guy's playing but the commentary is in German:

The 6505 or 6534 were two I thought of immediately and another one I'd consider is an Orange TH30. It has absolutely loads of gain available and putting some really good valves in it makes a big difference. It has a fantastic clean channel, more gain than most will ever use, the effects loop is superb, it's very reasonably priced and a bargain on the used market. It's also the loudest amp I've ever owned. I can play a gig on the 7w setting!

Some very good tips here. This forum always comes up with useful advice. Thanks all!

yeah i bet a mesa would nail those tones pretty easily. same with some of the peaveys like the new mini 6505. that thing looks nice!

This to me sounds like a straight up SLO with depth mod.
You could easily achieve this sound with any amp though with the right valve + boost selection.
The quickest route for me to get this would be the MKIIC+ or the SLO with no boost.
