Title: Phil's Les Pauls
Post by: PhilKing on August 29, 2007, 12:14:54 PM
This time I got out all the Les Pauls.  Probably one of these is my favourite guitar (today - this moment   ).

Front
1954 Les Paul Standard - goldtop was refinished and neck slimmed a bit.  I inherited it from a very good friend when he passed away earlier this year.
1971 Les Paul Custom 1955 limited edition - this has an Alnico neck pickup, P-90 bridge. Heavy though!
1960 Les Paul Special - refinished body.  I bought this sight unseen advertised as a stripped Junior with added pickup (from a dealer!).  It is the first SG model with a great wide flat neck. One pickup rewound by BK because it had a broken coil.
1959 Les Paul TV model - fake! Built by a friend from a Warmoth honduras mahogany body. I did the spraying - the grain is a little too red, but it looks like a respray over a cherry junior! Has the first BK Pig 90 - a crunch monster.
1971 Les Paul Standard 1954 Limited edition - this has a great neck - a little thicker than the 58's now.  Wrap around bridge model.
Back
1958 Les Paul Standard - Fake.  This was rebuilt by Will Scott Guitars (he actually fixed an unplayable clone).  The body is chambered.  Riff Raff/Stormy Monday pickups
1953 Les Paul Standard - converted to 59 specs.  Weighs nothing! Great playing guitar - lots of Mojo - BK Black Dog set.  Look for it on the cover of Atlantic Blues Guitar.
1986 Les Paul Standard - Dark Back limited edition.  I always wanted a darkback goldtop.  This has the new PG Blues set in it and they really make the guitar sing.
1959 Les Paul TV Model - refinished because of headstock break.  A lot too yellow!  Nice sounding original P-90.

As you can probably tell, I like P-90's.  They just have such a great raunchy rock tone.  Think Mountain, early Sabbath, Alex Harvey Band, the Who, Neil Young  and so many more.

i was waiting for these!!

i really like the half flamed maple completely off centre look of the 53 standard - its something we wouldnt forgive on even the cheapest guitars now but there it is on a very desirable gibson!!

maybe you should strip some of them goldtops to see whats underneath

Say Phil, do you also have some none-classic shapes? Sth like a Floyd Rose equipped Ibanez or sth? Or do you "only" have LPs, Strats, Teles, Vs etc?

Say another question: Aren't you ever scared when you go on a holiday that you come back and it's all gone?

It might be fake, but IMO it's the nicest looking one there - I LOVE the Vintage Burst finish.

Nice collection you have there... :)

It is actually a 3 piece top, just the centre section is flamed.  Someone inlaid a block for the bridge and tailpiece and also the bridge hb, but the workmanship is so good that even after 30 or more years, there is no cracks around it.  They did this rather than changing the neck angle.

I think, although it's a close run thing, that the converted 53 Standard is my favourite, but frankly they're all superb. One hell of a nice collection you have there Phil.

I cannot think of a "tastic" saying and so will stick with "quite nice". No really, very very nice and I agree about P90's-they are in a league of their own.

Bee-Ay-Oo-Tee-Fool!

I love that '53 Standard - just looks like its a joy to play.

In fact, they all look like they'd play brilliantly and sound even better!

Andy!

Hey man, how does sound this Pig-90??? It looks sexy to me, but I'm afraid of it is much "one way sound"...

It is not as much one sound as you might think.  It is a P-90 sound with more bass to it really.  It still retains the clarity of a P-90, and has most of the attacking growl.  It also cleans up really well (but after all it is a BK  8) )

Sorry to revisit this, but I just had to look at this again!
In theory, is your 53-59 conversion not a 53-60 conversion because of tailpiece angle anyway?

The 53 had the wrap under bridge and this one has had it replaced with a tailpiece/tune-o-matic.  The tailpice angle is slightly flatter from the side, but it is square to the strings.  The 54/55 models have the slanted wrap over tailpieces.

My collection is a bit less now, the custom has gone and I sold the 71-54 (but got a great 81 BC Rich Mockingbird!).  I do have 2 more on the way sometime soon though (they are custom builds).

Man in my opinion there is no better sound than a Les Paul. Something about it just makes me want to play
