Dark pickups for bright guitar
« on: December 17, 2008, 04:36:12 PM »
Hi guys, I think I'm finally getting around to ordering a set up BKPs; however, I'm slightly concerned about the woods my guitar is made of for getting a more optimal tone.

I have a Carvin DC-747 (HSH) 7 string made of walnut with a maple/walnut neck.  It's pretty bright as you could imagine.  Looking to replace the bridge and neck humbuckers.  I'm wondering which pickups offer a high output, dark lows, and a pretty nasally and raunchy midrange for the bridge.  For the neck I'm thinking something with a lower/mild output, more harmonics (for it's relative position), with huge amounts of mids and a moderate low end .  Getting treble isn't really a problem for either position.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Holy Diver calibrated set - your description fits it almost perfectly.
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

Oh hang on a second - I didn't notice "7 string" bit in your post

I still think an HD set would work well, but it depends how much tightness you want for the low B (assuming that's how you have it tuned) - are we talking Nile-esque DM riffage or a looser more organic kinda style like early Korn?

Painkiller bridge would give you the ceramic tightness but still with massive mids & plenty of low end.
VHII neck would go well with it, it has a nice PAF kinda neck tone but balances with the high output bridge models...

Just to clarify, I'm not saying Holy Diver can't do low tunings, just that I've never tried it.  The lowest I've ever tuned it is drop-C# for this clip (the second attempt that I posted at the end of the thread is better than the one in the first post)

I thought it sounded OK, so I imagine tuning 2 steps lower than that wouldn't be disastrous...

I'm playing in standard, fairly light strings, and again the wood used is extremely bright.

About the heaviest my playing gets with the Carvin is shred, Dream Theater, Metallica, Megadeth.

Is there a warpig 7?

Do they offer gold tops for the holy diver in 7 as well?

I'm thinking HD in the neck and a Warpig in the bridge.  Sounds like a win judging by the description.

the darkest high output BKP's are the miracle man and warpig neck versions
they both have a huge output and a nice voicing for bright guitars
and they are surprisingly good for the bridge position
the MM neck is just like a holy diver bridge, but a bit fatter and more nasal
like a dimarzio tonezone type of voicing
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Did you mean the Miracle Man and Warpig as bridge versions?

So Miracle Man neck, Warpig bridge...should be pretty damn beefy right?

I see. Cut back on the output a bit with the slightly tamer calibration.  Thanks for the help man!

actually the neck versions are completely different from the bridge versions
but they are as powerful as a bridge pickup, so they work great installed in the bridge position too
as they have a more nasal high end, they might be good to tame the brightness
but a Holy Diver would be great anyway
but if you wanna go any darker, than try a MM neck in the bridge position
