Maestro vibrola to Wrapover?
« on: January 24, 2009, 11:47:04 PM »
Hiya all.

I have this
http://www.modernguitars.com/imagefiles/gibson/GOMlarge/65G400.gif

Its absolutly my favourite guitar but i just never use the trem.

So would it be possible to stick a wrapover before the trem so I can take the trem arm off and have better tuning stability?
One like this

The problem you have is the current tailpiece.  It's held in place by the strings.  If you remove it, you'll just have the trem cover in place which might look a bit odd.

I never use the trem either and have no problem with tuning stability.  If you're having problems, it's more likely to be the nut.  I have a GraphTec Tusq one....

well i actually have no problem with tuning stability either! but when i restring it frustrates me because I tune up then have to do it again and again because the tension constantly needs correction. then i have to stretch the strings... bah.

I like the look of the huge tailpiece even if it isn't connected! This is why i've been looking at stop tail bridges. Plus i've been meaning to buy a new guitar that has no trem because i've never had one, and doing this would save massive moolah!!

I think I need a new nut though. I use 12-56 string for a lower tuning. do I need to get one that can be re-carved because the strings would be to fat for a standard?

You could have the standard nut widened by a tech - standard practice for a setup with 12s I would think.

Re. the bridge, I guess if you want to try it - try it!

The first link you posted doesn't work for me, but I'm guessing this is an SG with the Maestro vibrola?

Does the guitar currently have a standard tune-o-matic bridge?  Obviously it would need a bit of surgery to fit the wrapover since it uses much larger posts.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Yer it has a standard Tune-o-matic.

Is there anyway of getting a stoptail bridge without creating a no-turning-back point. I'de obviously like to keep it looking a bit old school, so none of that fine tuning stuff.

If not then i'll probs get a seasoned luthier to do job, i dont want to mess this one up.

As Phil says, you'll need bigger posts and therefore some routing on the guitar.  That would be a no turning back point.

I'm not sure there's a simple option...

LIke Phil, the first link doesn't work for me either but I assume that you are trying to do the opposite of what I was hoping to do:-

I was hoping to take the Lyre Vibrola from my old SG Standard and fit it on the '61 Reissue in the hope that the finished article would look something like the SG Standard looked when I origonally bought it (i.e cherry finish with an unbroken neck). However as Dave and Philly have mentioned it is not straightforward. If I had removed the stop tailpiece on the '61 reissue the post holes would still be partly visible outside the fitted vibrola and would have to filled and refinished. As my refinishing skills on the Standard amounted to painting it with woolworths black polyurethane paint,   I decided to leave well enough alone.

Never had any tuning problems with the Vibrola. (very early SGs had the 'side pull' model which apparently was notorious for going out of tune and sometimes breaking as it was made mostly from cast zamac (sort of zinc alloy))

Out of interest - do you take all the strings off at the same time? The problems you're having sound like you might be... if you are, try doing it one at a time, giving each string a good stretch after you put it on. Doing it one at a time leaves the strings/trem pretty much set up all the time (this is strat experience talking, might not apply to this one though? :D)

I have done this once before to replace pickups and change string gauge. But usually I do one at a time.

I think my strings have eaten away at the nut a little bit. They are quite deep and I think it has made the action quite low.
