Let us know how you like the MJW. I have sort of been tempted to get a bigger 2x12 which would hopefully sound a bit bigger than my compact one, which I want to take to uni.

Get an attenuator. I think they make a hell of a difference. Also try and listen to your neighbors at home/out habits. Everyone has a pattern to some degree. When they're out turn it up a bit more if you feel you need to. Will's point about self conscious is very true too.
If you sit in the focus of a speaker cab it sounds a lot louder.
When we were at the jam, my amp was attenuated by 40% and it wasn't even close to full wack even with the loadbox on. Really cracked volumes with your amp without an attenuator will make you feel sick after a while.  :D You can wake the dead with a 100w valve amp. Whats the output of your VHT?

If you're serious about getting an attenuator, you should check out this:

I thought Hunter was going to come in and recommend the axefx :P

I had a hotplate and it worked wonders with my fender (which had a really touchy volume control) but with my laney it didnt do anything that the master volume couldnt do. I suppose it depends if your amp gets its gain from the preamp or power amp? Would definitely try before you buy with it.

My amp seems like that but if you crank the master volume and use the channel volume I found it does make a difference.

Also Jonny an attenuator gives you some line outs for recording.

The ones on my Koch Loadbox don't. It has XLR balanced outputs with 4x12 or 1x12 and various mike placement sims. I've not used other makes so couldn't say.

I didn't realise they weren't up to much.

So how are the studies going Indy? I wish I could do a course like your doing, reading recording sites on the net after work is a slow process! I keep loosing my audio signals for some reason.
