PSS Strat
« on: November 25, 2009, 12:03:18 PM »

With my new neck on the way I need to decide what pickups I'll be putting in.  Just wandered if anybody has ever tried a P90 in the bridge position?  I'd be looking at something Humbucker size, probably not BKP due to funds at this stage but looking online not many folk seem to have done this.  I'm hoping a p90 would match the other single coils reasonably well but give some much required girth and sizzle to the lame strat bridge position!

I love strats and the way they look SSS but a single coil strat bridge PUP has never done it for me so thinking of alternatives....

I must admit, if i hadn't grown to love my IT bridge pickup, then I'd be in the same boat as you Tom.

I never used to use the bridge on its own. For a couple of years in the 80s I had a SD hot-rails in there, which was OK, but bridge/middle wasn't quite how I liked, and eventually I got fed up with what it looked like. And I started leaving off some, or even quite a lot, of the dirt I used to use on the sound.

Since getting MQs (and also experimenting with guitar configs in Variax guitars a while back) I have wondered about a P90 in the bridge. If I ever did anything other than SSS to a strat, it would be PSS...

And that Feline example does actually look very tasteful. One of my things against HSS (apart from the fact I don't really feel the need for a humbucker tone coming out of a strat anymore!), is that it always seems to look so darned neanderthal to me, either covered or exposed bobbins... each to his own I guess... but that black covers with a P90 look seems to press the buttons ok for me...

I bet that thing was killer for standard tuning slide, Jonathan :D

What's the body wood on that one?

just bear in mind that p90s are roughly as hot as humbuckers. it should sound nice (if you like p90s), but the bridge pickup will still likely be louder than the strat singles, i'd have thought.

Looks nice Jonathan, that's a nice grain coming throught the blue finish.

How was it wired?  Mater Volume and tone with 250K pots?

Andy, I agree that HSS / PSS strats don't look as good as a nice vintage SSS but it wont matter on this one what it looks like, I just want to get the most usable tones.  5 position strats have only ever had 3 decent positions IMO....
And, I really want a P90 without getting another guitar becuase I've never had a guitar with one!

Not too bothered about a volume jump dave_mc, infact I quite like that sometimes.  I mean with a strat I'll always spend 80% of the time on neck only anyway....
