Cheers for all of the responses guys. The more I think about it the more I realise that I will probably need to sell stuff  :(

I'm just about to take a drive to guitar village and try out some of their cheaper fenders/fender types. The Baja tele interests me as do the CV models. For some reason none of the strats they have in stock instantly appeal to me (other than the CS models). I am now wondering if it is just that fact that my current guitar is Custom Shop - perhaps I have convinced myself that nothing will be as good as that or maybe that it must be good as it comes from the custom shop. Will be interesting to A/B it against 'cheaper' models.

I expect that I'll be putting the strat on seconds out in a few days - unless I have a reckless change of heart of course.

Ian,

If they've got one, take a look at the Biffy Clyro signature Squier Strat.  I believe they're the best band-for-buck in the Strat world at the moment.

Cheers Dave - just got back. They didn't have any of those. Tried a couple of Bajas out, one very good one bad - both heavy with big necks. Also tried a few mexican strats out, one of which was very nice although it was in LPB with a R'wood board - reminded me very much of my current strat. I only had about 20 mins in there before closing time though - will pop back in a few days time - in the meantime I'll look around for the Squier you mentioned.

They're supposedly very good - and if you can find a good Mex (like the LPB one you tried) they're also a bargain...

Yeah - I was very surprised about how good Baja and the Strat I tried were. Acoustically they were both more resonant than I expected. The Baja was marginally better and would maybe work out cheaper in the long run as I think the parts are better quality - the pups most certainly are anyway.

Well if you do decide to go down the Baja route you could do worse than buying mine off me for £300! Its mint and I've never used it.

I'd check out G&L Legacys.... you may get a USA made for £500 but I have seen some nice tribute ones for £200- £300 on the Evil bay.

you could maybe pick up one of those new MIJ tokai breezysounds for £500... might be closer to £600, though.
