I went for the Ceramic Nailbomb in the end as I felt it would give me both the tightness and the tone i was after. Thanks for your help guys! :)

bear in mind Lamb Of God as far as i remember, use two noise gates to tighten the tone up, and they double track every guitar line they record, which will affect what your trying to achieve quite a lot!!!

well, they record with a '75 les paul goldtop (deluxe) with a duncan '59 in the bridge
their recorded tones don't sound ceramic at all

if you have a long chain of noisy effects, you could use one before them (to keep the guitar noise from getting amplified) and another at the end of the chain
in my experience, most of the noise comes from electro/electronic devices in the room (including some lamps, fans, PC monitors) interfering with the guitar pickups
it just gets amplified by the pedals (especially overdrives, boosters and equalizers) and the amp
most outlets here are hardly grounded, so supply powered pedals tend to add some noise (including the noise gate itself)

Noise gates aren't part of any sound. They are supposed to only cut out noise when NOT playing.

not too suure on the details to be honest, but they released a version of Sacrament with the individual instrument tracks as a remix competition some time ago, and i remember those details from a review of their sound,

sure, but they can change a lot of the attack if used obtrusively
