Lamb of God tone.
« on: March 01, 2011, 06:45:24 PM »
Hi guys, I'm looking for a Lamb of God style tone from my guitar, so basically I'm looking for a pickup that is good for metal with a nice tight bottom end, but doesn't sound like every other metalcore band out there. Basically, I'm looking for something that sounds 'alive' and not compressed like all the active pickups.
The guitar is an Ibanez SZ1220 Prestige, which has a thick flamed maple top, a mahogany body and mahogany set neck.
I was thinking of nailbombs, but do you guys have any other suggestions? And also, do you think I'd be better off with a ceramic magnet in the bridge for that extra tightness?
Thanks in advance :)

Personally I'd recommend trying a pair of Black Dogs - tight and aggressive, but at the same time open and uncompressed, and fully in keeping with LoG's preference for PAF-based pickups. In fact, you could even drop down a notch to the Mules for the true PAF experience, though they aren't as naturally snarly in the midrange as the Black Dogs are.

No, the BD's low end won't sound right.

This is a tough one. The Seymour JB is an obvious choice because of the very tight low end and the spikey upper mids/treble, that nastiness is part of that LoG tone if you ask me. I wouldn't know which Bareknuckle does that. I just got rid of the JB in one of my guitars because the only good tone I got out of it was that LoG sound, actually.
AFAIK half of LoG plays the JB, the bearded fat guy with the camo LesPauls I think. THe other guy I think plays the SH-1, which is also rather trebly.
I'd carefully point you towards the direction of the Rebel Yell, Coldsweat or Aftermatch - very tight pickups on the brighter side.

Hmm, I know that it is considered a part of their sound, but I wouldn't want anything too treble-y or a one trick pony. When I say LoG's tone, I mean more of the way it sounds completely 'organic' and natural, not like some of the bands out there today who just plug into AxeFX and all sound digital and the same, if that makes sense? I really like the sound of the nailbomb demos on the youtube channel, but I am curious as to whether it would do what I want/suit my guitar?

nailbomb, a5 version. Listen to sikth, they have an amazingly organic metal tone. I think that i remeber that one of their guitarists used the a5 nailbomb in his blackmachine guitar.

This song was used as an example on another forum recently for something or other and I'd never heard teh second Sikth album, I think it's a mess of cr@p guitar tones, not like the great sounds on their first record. Not a good advert for any gear involved, to me.

Pin has ceramic Nailbombs anyway I think.

All that said, I do think the conventional Nailbomb might be a good way to go.

I think I'm leaning towards the nailbombs, do you think the ceramic magnet for the bridge would be too bright or not?
Because if its not, I would prefer the extra tightness the ceramic would bring to my sound.

Willie Adler uses JB's

Mark Morton has some guitars with Breeds and some with 59's - atleast according to thi guitar world mag i have

Id say Cold Sweats, Nailbombs or Divers. If trying to get his rawer more open tone, i agree with blackdogs, but one of the other 3 mentioned for the main stuff.

Out of interest, what would you guys consider the pros/cons of the alnico and ceramic nailbombs to be for this application?

In this case I think ceramic is better, cause tighter.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I'd say that as well, especially considering your Ibby SZ is probably a warmer and bigger sounding guitar. You'll want to rein in that low end as much as you can.
