As WeAreNotGentlemen mentioned, the phenomena ( of a pickup cover slightly altering the tone ) only applies to Humbuckers or ( for example ) Telecaster neck pickups, where some , or all of the polepieces are covered. In the case of B.K.P covered Humbucker pickups, I thought I remembered reading that they add a bit more to the winding, which minimised differences ( although an un-potted humbucker will sound different / more open ) .
Twinfan on here, once mentioned that he felt the M.Q was not a typical P90, as it was fatter and less grinding. I can confirm those attributes as being true - and indeed were the very quality that I bought mine for . :)
Plenty of cut and snap still available though ; try the M.Q pickup at a slightly greater distance from the strings, as I found more snap and cut at => 3mm - and thicker / hotter sounds at 2.0 - 2.5 mm.
The overall effect has a lovely smoothness to it though, without ever being 'tame'. I feel sure you'll have a lot of fun from the M.Q. - and although I've never mixed it with another type of bridge pickup - the M.Q. neck has enough output to hold it's own ground . :)
