I actually think I played a Marshall class 5 some years ago. It sounded good, but I remember thinking: I'll be deaf before it reaches distortion  Pretty loud for a small 5 watter and with only a master volume...

It's a pity Marshall have discontinued them

They're not discontinued as far as I'm aware - it seems to be an internet myth!

unfortunately, it is seemingly true.  i've got that from a Marshall dealer, via a rep, and from the Marshall roadhouse site where Steve Dawson, designer of the Vintage Modern and Class 5, is an active member.  they are doing a designer series with attractive ladies on the grille cloth, and then that is it.  replaced by the Slash SL-5
cry HAVOC!! and let slip the pigs of war!!!

Is there no gain control on the Class 5 ?

sadly not, and you have to crank it really loud in the 5w setting to get any crunch. i've played class 5s a few times and they sound decent i think, plus the price is right! its a shame they don't have a gain control, because i think they'd have sold alot more and maybe they wouldn't be discontinuing them. there are various mods out there, but when i did some research on them i couldn't find any hard facts about them so decided not to go with a class 5 in the end.

I have one - an all white one from the second run, but I couldn't get a good sound out of  with it with single coils (which is what I largely use) - that and I still prefer my Fender Blues Junior.  But with a Les Paul at volume they do rawk.

This newer one has a more substantial cabinet and a thicker chassis to prevent rattle.  Used MkIs sell for over £200 on eBay, so to get a fully (3 year) warranted MkII for £269 was a steal I couldn't pass up.

ah right, so i didn't make that up then. And yeah that sounds like a pretty sweet deal :D
