suggestion for Gibson 1958 RI?
« on: September 07, 2014, 02:39:15 AM »
hi guys there,I am going to change my stock pu of Gibson 1958 RI because I'm not interested in vintage sound.By looking at others review I decide to get A-bomb in bridge and a rebel yell in neck.I have mailed BKP and Ben suggest that a cold sweat in the neck cause it is slightly stronger and fatter than the rebel yell. Thanks a lot for his advice. But after looking at the review I am a bit confused, someone says that it may be too much bottom in a les paul and it may sound mid scooped,is that a problem?
The style I play include EVH,GNR,Ozzy, linkin park, nightwish and metallica, maybe some ACDC and some solos like marty Friedman.I always use neck for solo and bridge for rythm. The amps are soldano and engl blackmore.
So is cold sweat a better choice than rebel yell for the style I play and fit well in a les paul? Thanks a lot!

A lot of people have been happy with either paired with an A-Bomb in a Les Paul.  I'd say it comes down to your preference.

What do you want?  I used a Rebel Yell neck / A-Bomb bridge so I could have a phat / crunchy bridge pup and a well balanced and beautiful sounding neck pickup.  If the guitar has a thin bridge pup / boomy neck then the RY neck / A-Bomb bridge is great.

Personally, I like how the RY sounds more vintage and the A-bomb is more modern.  I can cover blues / beautiful cleans right to hard rock, punk, and thrash / metal type tones!  If you want to go all out modern, perhaps the CS neck will be better?

Thanks for the suggestion!I've read a lot review of yours and it's really helpful.Find the same problem of thin bridge pup / boomy neck, especially under hi gain.I prefer  the neck sound more clarity and expect for  more fluid and singing tone for lead. Will the CS neck and A-bomb bridge get too much bottom on les paul and loss its clarity? Personally I think the RY won't have this problem,is RY excellent at lead tones?

Thanks for your suggestion!I've read a lot of your suggests and it is really helpful. From the eq chart I think a bomb neck may be to muddy in a les paul?Seems it has too much bottom(I haven't use BKP before so that only my guess)

With neck pickups it really comes down to your playing style and what you want to do with it as much as its compatibility with the guitar.  I had a CS neck paired with an A-Bomb in an SG Standard and didn't feel that they went well together, mainly because that guitar intensified the aggressiveness of the A-Bomb.  I moved the A-Bomb into my Explorer and added a NB neck, and left the CS neck in the SG and fitted a CS bridge.  I am happy with both now.

That said, I use neck pickups VERY occasionally ... in fact I am starting to think that they are a waste of money!

I think A-bomb is too aggressive in SG body too ...Hope it will work well on les paul :)

A-Bomb is aggressive in a LP but I don't know if it is TOO aggressive.   It's more fat with tonnes of treble detail / hair in the tone.  I think the RY neck would pair up well and you can always adjust the height to fine tune things further.  I adjusted the pole pieces to further tame the boomy E problem which is inherent with this design.

HA Agent Orange!  I love my neck pickups, great for leads and clean playing!!!

On another note, my VHII is in so I'll soon be able to comment on the VHII / Rebel Yell combo.  I'm definitely excited about this!  It will have to wait until Tuesday since I am currently 1000 miles from home, finishing up school FINALLY!
