BKPs to replace EMG 81x/85x
« on: March 26, 2016, 12:28:18 PM »
Hello guys! I have been playing with the thought of finally having all of my guitars equipped with BKPs lately. There is only one without BKPs, a Mayones Setius with EMG 81x/85x. It is tuned in D standard/drop C and it sounds good for metalcore like Bullet for my Valentine (obviously, because they use EMGs themselves) but it sounds too modern for stuff like Volbeat. Before I got the EMGs the guitar had a set of Cold Sweat (b) and VHII (n). The VHII was absolutely stunning and did not get affected too much by the change of tuning, but the CS lost all its power and oomph. Sounded epic in E and Eb though. The EMGs have a few issues; the batteries can be a hassle, the volume pot has started to act really weird and the tone pot does not do much. I want a set of pickups that sound great for downtuning, as well as E standard if I ever decide to tune it up again. The Black Hawks have been very exciting ever since their release, I like the idea about active tone without batteries, but are they very modern sounding? The Rebel Yells are great pickups as well, they are more vintage sounding and suits the guitar really well (very dark sounding guitar, almost darker than my Les Paul). But do they handle downtuning well? I have also been looking at the Miracle Man, C-bomb and even Black Dog.
BKs: Black Dog (b), Riff Raff (b), HSP90 Nantucket (b).

Before moving to EMG, Bullet For My Valentine used to use Seymour Duncan JB pickups, which would suggest a Holydiver might be an interesting option. That being the case, I think the Miracle Man would be a better option for you as it's tighter and more modern but has a lot of the warmth and smoothness of the Holydiver while still being reminiscent of an active tone. It's a remarkable pickup.

Thanks man! I have a Holydiver laying in my drawer actually, but I am almost 100% certain it will be too dark for the Setius. The Miracle Man sure is a interesting pickup, but I am not a fan of such a hot neck pickup. Will the MM bridge match alright with the VHII in the neck? I understand the MM is based on BLS, another EMG user so I am a bit afraid it will be too modern sounding. Michael in Volbeat also uses JB, not sure what the new lead guitarist is using. The former lead guitarist might have used JB also, not sure about that. The Setius had a JB/Jazz combo originally but it did not sound particularly good imo..

The JB is fantastic in an alder guitar but I'm not keen on it anywhere else.

The Miracle Man has more bottom end than the Holydiver but it has more highs too. It's also not as modern as you might think. If you imagine the Holydiver as an early 80s Metal tone, think of the Miracle Man as late 80s and early 90s. The tone is very like the Ozzy song 'Miracle Man' and a good neck option to go with it is the Cold Sweat.

I see, looks like I might have to give the MM (b) a shot then. The CS is an alright pickup but I am honestly not the hugest fan of it (the neck model that is). The VHII is a perfect neck pickup for this guitar, that is why I am asking. Best split tones I have ever heard, beautiful clean tones both split and full and smooth solo tones, exactly what I am looking for really. The only way I would consider something else is if I figured that I wanted to try the Black Hawks instead.
