Which bridge humbucker has the most lows?
« on: January 23, 2024, 09:42:51 PM »
I have a project guitar whose bridge pickup position is closer to the saddles than the normal Fender spacing (still 25.5" scale length), so it makes the bridge pickup naturally brighter with less bass than normal.  I'm looking to replace the Suhr SSV that's in there now, which is fairly bright in general (I've had it in other guitars).  From trial and error I don't like Ceramic humbuckers or Alnico II (outside of very low output PAFs).  I don't really care about output level, but nothing extremely high output.

I play mostly into a Friedman BE-100 Deluxe these days, and what I'm really missing is that nice low end "wamp" or "womp" kind of sound when you palm mute or chug.  Like if you play an open power chord and then dampen the strings near the bridge quickly, that low-end "womp" that happens.  My Les Paul Custom with 498T probably does this more than any other guitar that I have.

Given that this project guitar is naturally brighter than others because of the pickup placement, which Bare Knuckle should I try?  Which has the most extended low end?  Not necessarily thick mids like a Holy Diver, and not necessarily "warm" (I still want some high end bite), but the most low end?  Crawler or Nailbomb or Silo or Peacemaker or Black Dog or Mule or...?

Of the ones mentioned, Crawler bridge would have more low end than the Nailbomb, Mule or Black Dog. Not familiar with the others. Miracle Man has even more but has a ceramic magnet which you did not want.

The main choice for that is usually the Alnico War Pig but I have never played that one either.

Cheers Stephan

Thanks for the reply.  I'm sure you're right that the Crawler has the most bass, but the clips I've heard make it seem to lack some "bite" in the highs (which actually might end up fine in this guitar, not sure).  I almost wonder if I should try the Nailbomb here, though I found it too aggressive in another guitar.  I seem to remember it having both a lot of lows and a very bitey high end.

I'm curious about some of the lower output pickups, does the VHII have a lot of low end?  The Black Dog (I've heard that's more just a lot of mids similar to a Holydiver)? There's a post from someone here saying that the Peacemaker almost sounds like it has a high pass filter on it, like it cuts a lot of the lows below 120 Hz or thereabouts, so I don't think that I want that.  I don't need something bloated, but with deep, extended lows, a very broad frequency response.  Not necessarily wound to be focused a ton on the mids like some of the more modern pickups seem to be, so I wonder if a lower output pickup might be best.

I’ve used the Mules and a Crawler.

The Mule Set was in a PRS Korina single cut, the Crawler is in a H configured MIJ Basswood Strat.

My Crawler has sufficient bite for the older school hard rock that I often play, but a description that someone, maybe BKP, gave was that it growls rather than screams.  That seems to be fairly accurate.  But, it certainly isn’t a dull top end, at least in my Strat.

Personally, I thought that the Mules had better cut, but less in the low end.  Maybe you can dial in sufficient lows in with your amp?

What style of music do you play?

I ended up with a Suhr DSH+ here and I'm very happy with it, thanks.
