7 String Pickup Question
« on: July 02, 2007, 03:25:35 PM »
I'm looking for some pickups with a twist for my soon to arrive Ibanez Universe. I already own a Universe, so I know I dislike the Blaze bridge, the single coil is cr@p, but the Blaze neck is good. I'm pretty much set on an alnico Nailbomb for the bridge, but I’m after suggestions for the middle and neck.

I’ve been told that BKP offer 7 string singlecoils, but the customer has to supply the bobbin. What I’m hoping to do is get my existing Blaze single rewound to something much nicer and then have a special pickup made for the neck slot consisting of a singlecoil and a dummy bobbin so it’ll fit the existing route and pickguard. I’m guessing winding only one coil of a humbucker shouldn’t be a problem.

So, what spec should I ask for? I want a nice versatile set that can cope with metal (as if you couldn’t guess), but a bit of everything else too. I’ve been messing around with a lot of bluesy “in between” position stuff using the singlecoil neck and middle of my RG 6 string, which is why I want a 7 string with neck and middle singlecoils. The 6 strings not going to be around for much longer.

I prefer the sound of alnico magnets over ceramic and I’m currently running though an Ashdown Fallen Angel 60 running JJ E34L’s into a Trace Elliot 3x12 (yes, three). I like the sound of a Duncan JB-7/59-7 combo in mahogany too.

Probably makes more sene to get a normal neck humbucker and have a coil split switch as well.  either way it will never sound exactly like a single coil because magnets are in different places and coils are different sizes - - but if you speak to tim, he might be able to tell you different

I wonder if it's possible to make a singlecoil without mounting tabs and mount it on a humbucker bottom plate? I really want a proper singlecoil sound, not a split humbucker sound.

Yes, that be me, though I wouldn't describe Matron as a doom metal band. I've had to leave though, being in a band that rehearses Sunday afternoons in London isn't going to be good when my child's born.

It's sevenstring.org btw ;)

Sounds like I do need to give him a ring then.

Any suggestions on what pickups would work though?
