My question would be - why a 1x12, when a 2x12 is still very portable and not that much more expensive ?
this because when you have even a 4x12, you tend to only mic up one speaker anyway, unless you want a sterio sound, which I don't. Unless a 2x12 actually sounds much better than a 1x12, I think the smaller cab will give me a big enough sound as long as it's micked, don't you?
Yes, if you close mic a 1x12 or a 2x12 it will sound pretty similar through the PA, so long as the cabinet size of the 1x12 is large enough. However, on stage, using your cab for personal monitoring, you will probably have a more pleasurable experience for yourself using a 2x12 than a 1x12.   This is why I am now stupidly experimenting with 4x12's - They are so ridiculously large and heavy - I really can't decide whether it's worth it, at the moment.  :?

Mic'd you'll be fine with a 1x12.  If you always mic up you'll be OK.

I don't know about those other cabs so I can't comment.

You may want to check out the new (cheaper) Cornford range as well, although that'll be a 1x12 combo.

No-one mentioned a Tiny Terror yet? My how opinions change.

I love my TT, great clean tone (shut it Twinfan! It's awesome clean even at high volumes!) and crunchy and gain-ey when the gain knob is twiddled. Plus looks great on top of an Orange 1x12. I've gigged this set up, good sized venue (Barfly in Glasgow) and I heard every note I played, with a Crunchbox in front for my distortion sound.

  Steady on there boy!

The TTs are good, but if you want a good clean and dirty amp there are better options.  The TT does dirt best in my opinion  :)

Have to put in a mention for the Laney Lionheart 20w head + 2x12 cab here - it fits the budget and the requirements very well, and sounds lovely too. Great cleans, great overdrive at reasonable volumes, 2 channels and easily loud enough to gig with.

I feel that the lionheart is very good clean, but not as good overdriven, cannot compare to my JCM900 at similar volume (and people love complaining about the 900 :P )

Agreed, I love mine, but it's below his price range so I didn't pipe up :) TT + cab is about £440 (what I paid).

My budget is £500-1000.

I am looking for:

an amp head, low watt, nothing over 20 watt. It has to have a nice breakup and be able to do clean through to classic rock and everything in between.

the BEST 1x12 cab, for use in any style, but mostly rock, built to last harcore gigging.

Ideally I'd like to know what your experiences are and what you'd recommend if you had that kind of money to play with.

regards,

Ben.

I'd look into the Brunetti Maranello 1x12 20w Tube Combo. They're hand-made by Marco Brunetti, an Italian boutique amp maker. I heard clips of the Maranello at the January 2008 NAMM show and it sounded absolutely amazing. It may be a little above what you're looking to spend, but it's really special.

Best of luck with your search man. I live in the United States so I'm not too familiar with the used market over there across the pond, but perhaps you could find a cool used Orange combo for your price range as well?

Another great amp which fulfils all the intial OP's criteria is the Matamp King Street Classic head. With a matching 1x12 Matamp cab, would be under £1000, and would be a top quality rig.

I was actually thinking of getting an orange head second hand maybe even a 30 watt head off ebay, or maybe the Vox 50 watt head, I forget the name. lol I'll check out Maranello Brunetti too!

The Orange Rocker 30 Head, is a fine amp for the money.

I've not played one of the Vox Classic Plus amps, but they have received a pretty lukewarm reception almost everywhere.
