Back in Nov 2007 it peaked at $2.16 dollars per £, today it is around $1.46 dollars per £. I was interested in getting a Ceriatone kit - these are directly priced in US $ - if I bought one today it would be 44.9% more expensive than if I had bought it back in Nov 2007.

I have read that after the Obama 'honeymoon period' the dollar is expected to fall in value. Also America, Canada and Mexico are supposedly well on track to introducing the Amero which will be a common currency which will replace the individual country currencies (i.e. like the Euro) and the value of the dollar is expected to fall before the Amero is introduced. ( Lots of detail on this - search 'amero' in google and youtube ) Apparently Bush has already signed up for this without consulting Congress

I thought the Amero was just a conspiracy theory.

For years the £ was worth around $1.6 then the $ fell and the £ grew stronger and indeed in the last 18 months it peaked at well over $2 to the £. So in reality things are not far off from where they were up to 2 years or so ago. The Euro has, meantime, been rising against both the £ & the $. The next year will be interesting as there are rumours of some countries leaving the Euro. How they manage that will be very interesting as I think only one country has an exit strategy.

From what I have read it looks as if it's likely to be introduced - perhaps Obama might want to stop it?

If you look at some of the Youtube videos on the Amero (and the general USA financial system) it is really scary - even if only partly true.

^ yeah, but if they're the kind of conspiracy videos i'm thinking of, there's a good chance they're 0% true.

back when the exchange rate was good, one explanation given for the high prices of US-made gear was that they "had to hedge their bets against currency fluctuations". It's not that long ago that the pound was at a similar rate versus the dollar as it is now (1:1.5. or so), and i didn't notice the prices falling too much when the dollar fell to two per pound...

not talking about the little guys like feline, legra etc., but the big guys seem to want to have their cake and eat it too.

I don't think it'll be long before Gibson end up like PRS, where you can import CU22/24s and the higher end models, get hit with maximum duty charges and still pay less than what SOUNDCONTROL paid for one at trade.

That was a frightening day when we were trying to price one for a collegue

EDIT: Admittedly, we worked that out when I was working in the Brum store, so between February and June of last year, when the pound was quite a bit stronger meaning importing was obviously cheaper than now.

Mine's on you Dave!

I'll only crack if I find one of the following reduced below, oooh, £1,000:

1. Gibson ES-339
2. Fender Heavy Relic Strat or Tele (and it'd have to be a good one!)
3. Feline Emerald Lion (I can dream, can't I?)

So that's two votes for me cracking then!   I must have a reputation...

Well I just bought Adam's Ibanez MTM2, does that mean I'm the first?

Haven't bought a brand new guitar though. But I doubt I won't be in the top ten of those who crack.

I'm not looking!

Well OK I did   .  I was never impressed by the (pictures of) Nash guitars I've seen in the past, I didn't think the relicing looked very good.  But that's a nice one.

But still, it's basically an Allparts Tele... so there's no reason it should be any better than my (almost-in-progress) Warmoth body/Fender neck contraption.  Unless Bill Nash gets to pick out the very best Allparts necks and bodies.

Not cracking yet!

It does if you were planning not to buy any guitars this year!  :)

I wasn't supposed to, no, but it was a tasty offer, lol

But for the books, I'll say I was looking for a guitar since it doesn't really put a good image down, it should be some ££££ Fender Relic or something, not a MTM2 or even an Ibanez, lol..

A mate of mine has a Nash Strat and a Nash Tele, and the relic'ing on both is what i'd describe as 'aggressive' - it looks good though, and the attention to detail is fantastic. A bit over the top for me, but of course that's just my opinion :)

Hopefully the dollar keeps rising.  Previously I put a Black Dog bridge covered, Mule Neck covered in the cart, and it would have cost me over $440!  Now, it would cost me about $300!  I'm definitely going to get some soon.

Must be something in this "no new guitars year".  I'm thinking the same too.

I wonder who'#ll crack first?

My money's on Phil.....
