Metal pickups for a Gibson V
« on: October 28, 2005, 04:05:59 PM »
Hey guys.

I’m probably getting a gibson V pretty soon and have decided to use BKPs in it (if I get it!). I’ve never liked those gibson pickups that much. Too wooly.

I play metal and need plenty of gain, so my choices are pretty much:

Warpig, which I already have in another guitar, and while I love it, I’d rather not duplicate tones between my guitars. I will use them if I cant decide on anything else though.

Nailbomb, Miracle Man.

I’d like a heavy sound, and I’m a clarity freak. I’d like something a little open sounding and organic but capable of serious aggression.

I spoke to Steve earlier (helpful chap, thanks again Steve!) and he recommended the Nailbomb. Currently this is my feeling as well, it sounds pretty close to what I want. My only concern with it is that it may not deliver a sharp cutting high end if needed (which I sometimes do). For this sound it would be the miracle man. But my concern with that is that itll sound too tight and punchy, which is a great sound, but I have that in abundance in other guitars: I don’t want it to sound too similar to my EMG81’d mahogany dean or my swinsehead Xbuckered epiphone (god knows what its made from….what they had lying round on the floor, probably).

Does anyone have any experience of either the miracle man or nailbomb in ideally a gibson V? (any all-mahogony guitar would be helpful, really!).

And failing that, how much does the warpig bring out the character of a guitars wood? I currently have one in a maple necked basswood bodied jackson. I know putting it in an all mahogany guitars going to change it a fair bit, but how much?

Any help is very much appreciated!

Cheers
Mark

My experience with BK pups is very limited so I can't really draw comparisons between one product and another. All I can say is that the Nail Bomb can deliver really clean well defined highs with superb clarity and string definition.
If your Gibbo V is all mahogany with a tunamatic style bridge the top end may get softened a bit but that would be true with any pickup

Listen to Tim's clip of 'Diary of a Madman'. That's a Nailbomb in a mahogany flying V. (The custom polka dot harpoon)

Ok, by those, and re-consulting the stickied clips, I prefer the nailbombs tone: theres enough indication there that its got the ballance and character that I want, but now I'm not sure it has the gain.

I play some very heavy stuff. About as heavy as it gets. Can the nailbomb cut it if I want to play some Nile or SYL through it? I dont mean tonally, I mean in output.

Could someone please give me an estimate of what percentage of a Warpigs output a Nailbomb is capable of?

P.S. All this and I may not even get the guitar: its advertised at work for £100 inc. hardcase!!!!! This guys emigrating to dubai and selling all his guitars: 70s USA strat for £150, said gibson and a pacifica 112 with unspecified duncans for £50. Of course I got in there fast and told him I'll buy all of them  8)  But I doubt I'm the only person out of 10000 people that work where I do that have noticed the ad   . Hes on holiday at the moment, back at work on tuesday. I'm gonna stalk him, starting Monday afternoon, right off the plane untill he relents and sells me his guitar collection  :D

I would say the Nailbombs. They would have a wider tone change from your warpigs compared to getting the miracle man.

As output wise for the Nailbomb, i play fairly heavy stuff ( not Nile, but Necrophagist among other beef metal stuff ) and the Nailbombs are great for me. I play in a mahogany body ( Ibanez RGT 2020 ) so the combination of wood and pickups should be fine. And as stated earlier on the cleans are beautiful.

Thanks Lepermessiah, thats encouraging! (by the way, you play much Necrophagist? You must be a pretty damm good guitarist, most of that stuffs outta my league! [at the moment ;)])

Ok, since we're all (The guys at BKP included to their credit) guitarists first and foremost, I wont be coy about the fact that I'm looking into other makes now. It seems a bit cheeky to post questions like this on the BKP forum, but basically the end of the story is I'm looking tor the best pickups for me. Its to be expected. And I trust the opinions of the members here, most of you know alot more than me about pickups. So I'm asking this here: WCR have got my attention as well, and I'm encouraged by what I hear about the Herc and Iron Man; could anyone with experience with these give me a comparison with the Nailbomb?

And could I get a slightly overwound Nailbomb set? Just a little more to give a bit more output without sacrificing its tone (which I'm now as sure as I can be without trying it that its the best for me).

Thanks again!

I know I am biased, but we have had several WCR sets in for re-wind and were not impressed by the examples we have seen, we have also have replaced them in a large amount of peoples guitars with great success.

The Herc set looks a similar output to our miracle man and Nailbomb neck,
Never heard of the Iron Man before.
They are also more expensive over here, you have to play extra for 4 conductor and covers (which you have to fit your self and so you will have to pay some one here to pot them on!!!) remember import duties too!

We truly believe that our pickups are far superior to any other manufacturer's... Try and make it to music live if possible and you can try some out.

Jim Wagner tells me the Iron man is comparable to the Warpig: A5 or ceramic 8 @22.5k. Just FYI. It has quite a gushing review on HC.

Ok, seeing as the BKPs I have are quite superb (I mean to the extent that they make you wonder how some sounds are even possible to be in the same pickup: the warpigs shear heaviness and output, but great cleans as wel? The mind boggles) and I reckon I if you get WCRs in for improvements then BKP has to be the trump card.

Alright I'm satisfied that its more BKP magic I want.

That and listening through all the nailbomb clips and I'm more that convinced that they can cut it gain wise!!

If I manage to get this guys guitars (I'll be gutted if I dont...a bidding war is pretty much inevitable for a £100 Gibbo V and £150 USA strat) then I'll be on the phone to your good selves on monday or tuesday (edit, sorry, tue or wed) for a set of nailbombs.

Now the only question is asthetics. Do I get uncovered, as I mentioned on the phone, to keep the appearance of the guitar, black or that battle scarred finish....Damm your options!!!!!

Battle scared I think, without engraving. Does that cost extra?

Thats shocking... its got a simular output and is named after a Sabbath song, how little imagination.

The black battle scarred covers will cost the same as the camo covers.

The first few comments could be part of a warpig review as well....very girthy tone....good cleans....

Anyway, same price! Superb. WWI tank pickups it is then. For the guitar I dont have yet

Thanks for the help Steve!

Hi  Ive put a set of Crawlers into my Flying V and  it sounds awesome.Playing classic rock Free, Lizzy,Skynrd.etc. great tonal range and sustain . Much better than the Gibsons. Now its save up time and get either a set of mules or another set of crawlers for my Les Paul Standard.Putting these guitars through a Marshall TSL 122 combo
Gibson 2000 Honeyburst Standard/10th Anniversaries
Bernie Marsden PRS SE/Miss.Queen/Mule.
