Petrucci Wiring with Bare Knuckles
« on: August 04, 2010, 03:26:22 AM »
Hey everyone,

Has anybody every tried doing Petrucci style wiring with a set of BKP? I found a diagram for it on Dimarzio's site, and after I converted all the wiring to BKP colors, I noticed the DImarzio pickups are upside down in the diagram. If I did it this way wouldn't the middle position give me the two outer coils in parallel instead of the inner ones? Any help is appreciated, here is the Dimarzio diagram:

If I install my pickups right side up, should I flip the positions of the red and green bridge + black and white neck (Dimarzio color scheme)?

I don't think the DiMarzios are both upside down, they're set with both screw coils (or the equivalent) facing the same way (like the Peter Green Les Paul).  That way, in the middle position with both pickups split, you have one "screw" coil and one "slug" coil active, so it's still hum-cancelling.

If you install the BKPs the conventional way with both screw coils facing out, but still have the inner coils active in the middle position, it won't be hum-cancelling (which may not matter to you, of course).

As for which connections you should flip to get the connections right, I'm afraid I don't understand the workings of the switch well enough to figure out which coil will be active if you want to change the orientation of the pickups.  I'd probably do it by trial and error!

You need to have the magnet in the neck pickup reversed
We use this wiring a lot and there is no way around it if you want hum cancelling in all 3 positions

You can easily order it like that from Tim or return a pickup to have it done
I have reversed loads myself (as I have a wax dipping facility I can restore the wax that was disturbed by undoing things)

Thanks for the info. Can you hook me up with a wiring diagram for when I have the load reversed?

If you were to wire your guitar as the diagram instructs, it would be humcancelling in the middle position but you would find the coils selected were "one inner, one outer" if you get what I mean. In other words the middle position would select EITHER the coil closer to the neck OR the coil closer to the bridge of EACH pickup.

Does my wording make sense?

So the question to ask in this case is, will it change the tone significantly to select a coil which is slightly closer/further away from the bridge? As you could either swap one magnet, or live with the odd coil positioning in the middle position. Obviously if you are ordering new pickups from BKP you can just have one magnet reversed during construction.

Hmmm- dont have a diagram per se
I tend to end up doing the wiring from first principles each time
The mag flip will allow you to still have the screw pole at the neck and bridge positions

In BKP humbuckers (normally)
screw coil is south polarity and has black and white wires at coil ends
slug coil is NORTH polarity and has red and green wires at coil ends

If my memory serves me correctly - you will require to do this to give inner coils on together humcancelling and in phase
Flip neck magnet so slug coil is south in neck pickup

Bridge pickup
red = hot - goes to switch on the output side
black = earth - goes to pot
green + white are coil tap point and go to other side of switch that connects to earth - note that coil tap wires go on opposite orientation to hot wire

Neck pickup - gets it's wiring turned inside out
green = hot
white=earth
red + black =coil tap

if this sounds thin in middle position , reverse neck green and white

I found this old diagram I did of the switch but I may have the hot and earth wires reversed on the neck pickup
Test for yourself to get the right result
