Any body using Black Dogs in an SG ?
« on: January 26, 2011, 07:02:16 PM »
I want to try some BKP pickups in my Gibson SG. Ive already tried the bridge Riff Raff and didnt like it in my SG so they are out and I use a PRS with mules which sounds great but want something different.

Black dogs sound great in a Les Paul so is anyone using them in an SG?

what exactly you didn't like about the riff raff?
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

It gave a sound I can best describe as 'sterile' which Ive not found in the Mule or Crawler pickups

I would not suggest mid output pickups for a SG. If you don't like the riffraffs and I presume you want to stay PAF on this guitar - I would suggest you try Stormy Mondays or Mules with Alnico II .
Another option is the Mississippi Queen set.
I have a Standard SG with a MQ set in it and it is a total keeper. As much as I like changing pickups and messing around with my guitars - since I've gotten those I haven't touched it.

Indeed, look at the MQ's and the Nantucked.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

I have a Black Dog in my SG's bridge and it works amazingly well.
I first had a 498T in there, then a Miracle Man and now the Black Dog and this is clearly my favorite. It doesn't have a lot of output but very complex mids and solid bass/treble. It doesn't scream, it growls very nicely. It often feels like it has enough power, but you do feel the PAF clarity typical of lower output humbuckers. I did replace the pots with new 500K ones to ensure it isn't too dark - the original pots were around 300 I think. This also brightened the neck humbucker up a lot btw.

So if you get one I would order some new pots as well at the same time.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog
