Suggestions for edwards lpc and schecter c1
« on: March 25, 2011, 09:25:50 AM »
I'm on my way to order a new bridge pickup for my edwards les paul custom
(mahogany body, maple top, mahogany neck with ebenholtz fingerboard)
I want to try riff raff or black dog for that guitar, i'm looking for a more vintage pickup that can handle modern metal ok, and iknow after hearing official clips it can.
i have pickups with higher output in other guitars so in this case i will try to let my preamp do the gain
as i said i have other guitars for modern hi gain stuff, but want this guitar to be more versatile to play older stuff when i'm in mood for that. (still want it to be tight, but guess it will not be a problem with neither of them)

right now i have a miracle man in that edwards and iknow the pickup is kinda of bassy and after trying out different guitars with that pickup i know my edwards have a lot of bass, i think mm is to muuch in that guitar, therefore i'm afraid black dog will be to bassy too?
on clips i do prefer black dog voicing but i like riff raff alot to.

i want to replace my miracle man in my schecter c1 black jack
(mahogany body, maple neck, rosewood board)
it's way to bassy and little muddy in that gutiar, and i would prefer a pickup with higher mids, less bass, and still tight bass
i do have ceramic nailbomb in my esp eclipse and i love that pickup but i want to have different pickups in my guitars.

i play mainly thru a engl fireball 100 with v30
play mostley thrash stuff, exodus, annihilator, old metallica, megadeth, iced earth. but also play iron maiden, judas priest, accept and so on, even more hairband ;) i know i can't cover up all with one pickups just wanted to mention what i play.

sorry for long post.

The Black Dog doesn't have huge amounts of low end but it does have that fat, growling midrange that makes it sound full. However, I also think the Riff Raff would be a great choice for your guitar. I don't think you could go wrong with either, so just go with whichever you prefer the sound of.

For your Schecter, have you considered a Rebel Yell? I use it in my main metal guitars in both 6 and 7 string formats, and I believe it would meet all your criteria.

Actually not, guess i have laid to much focus on the humbuckers with modern clips on bkp site ;)
i know you recording a lot, do you have any metal clips with the rebel yell?

For the Edwards LP I would go for Black Dog bridge and Riff Raff neck.

For the Schecter either Aftermath or Alnico Nailbomb.

Cheers Stephan

I recorded all of my band's mini-album with the Rebel Yell, but unfortunately it hasn't been released yet so I can't show you! However, this is a short test clip I did with it:

Yep, should sound excellent in the neck - AFAIK it's simply a hotter wound version of the RR neck.

fine, then it will be easier with my edwards :)

guess i have to search forum and update my self about rebel yell, and maybe aftermath and painkiller to, guess them also would work good in my schecter.

i must say i have a pretty hard time decide what i should try this time.
hardest part is for my schecter, right now i'm thinking between am or pk
after testing out same pickup in different guitars i understand much better know how big difference it is, and because of that i'm having even harder time choosing ;)

my schecter is kind a dark and undefined in the bottom compared to my other guitars, and because of that i'm thinking pk suit better, i do understand am is tighter, but i also understand it have more low mids and that should not be an advantage or am i thinking entirely wrong?
if i want a direction more of old school thrash i guess pk will suit my need best?
i guess am will be a better pickups for leads?

thanks för helping out.

the aftermath has just a hair more low mids than the painkiller
still less low mids and a lot less bass than the miracle man

but if you think your schecter sounds too dense and muddy, then you should grab something lower output and more airy
the fireball is a very saturated and processed amp, even at minimum gain settings
the aftermath is very grainy on the mids (much more than the miracle man), so it might be overkill for your guitar and amp

may sound counter intuitive, but I'd leave the riff raff for the schecter and choose whatever other (or the same) model for the les paul, since all BKP humbuckers work pretty well in les pauls
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

cool! i just ordered a riff raff for my schecter, and black dog for my les paul.
let's hope i like these low output pickups ;) they do sound great on clips.
and as you said my fireball will handle the gain with ease ;)
