11-56 gauge in C# with Floyd - would you risk it?
« on: November 08, 2011, 02:41:04 PM »
I've finally found a set of strings that I like for detuning to C# - the D'Addario EXL117s:
11/14/19/32/44/56

They're great on my trusty RR1T (tune-o-matic bridge), but now I'm considering putting them on a guitar with a Floyd.  Do you think the tension would be too much?
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

Well, you will end up adjusting the trem springs, but that's about it. I'd say go for it.

Depends what strings are currently on there already.

You can calculate the string tension for each string, add them up for both sets and see how close you'll be. It might take another spring or two in the floyd, assuming the neck has enough strength to cope with the extra tension... they're not that heavy strings, I set my backup RG up with 13-60s in drop A (from 10s or 11s in standard tuning, I forget now it's a while ago).

Go for it. I done it with 12 - 56's tuned to E on the Carvin I had (which you played yourself when you sold me the Gothic V) and the trem handled it just fine.

Is that no you wouldn't risk it or no you don't think the tension would be too much? :)

The tension will be fine. Alexi from Children of Bodom plays Drop C with 11-50 and D Standard with 10-56, and al his guitars have Floyds, so you'll be perfectly fine :)

Really? That's a weird setup  :?

But then again, the dude is from Finland. They're a bit odd usually.
