Unhappy with C-Pig...suggestions?
« on: April 03, 2012, 09:08:40 PM »
Hey all, this is my first post. I got a C-Pig not too long ago based off of Ben's suggestion after I described the sound I was looking for and sent links to my band. I must say though, I am not very happy with my choice. I find the pickup to sound way too compressed, and it has too much low/low-mid to the point where it doesn't cut through the mix well at high volumes.  I have experimented with my amp EQ settings, but still haven't found a tone I really love. I am playing fast/slow heavy hardcore/punk/grind stuff on an Ibanez RGA 121 (mahogany w/ maple top, bolt on maple neck). I'm playing through a VTM120 and a Blackstar HT-100 each through their own Emperor 4x12/2x12 stack.  One of the 4x12s has G12T-75s, and the other 3 cabs have Weber 65's.

Thanks in advance!

add mids. Reduce bass.

We play grind in A. Mids are maxed out, and theres a cpig in the bridge. Sounds amazing

Yeah, I cut the lows significantly, reduced resonance on the Blackstar, played with mids/highs/presence...you name it, and it still sounds too muddy. Hate to say it, but it sounded meaner with the stock pickup - which was too flat sounding and a bit thin.  What kind of amp are you playing through?

Depends. My rig is a Pod hd pro, running through a mesa poweramp into a 4x12 rectifier cab.
The other is a Engl blackmore into a marshall 1982 4x12 cab.

Cuts through like a tanto through butter

If you want something tighter and with less bass I suppose the Miracle Man, Aftermath or Painkiller might work but I confess I didn't expect those criticisms of the C-Pig. When I talked to Tim about the possibility of a Warpig I was also worried about the amount of bass but he said the A-Pig was a very versatile pickup. Mine is a brighter guitar than yours though and I imagine that's why Ben suggested the C-Pig for you. Actually, now I think about it, how about a Nailbomb? I didn't like the A-Bomb I tried but I always maintained it would work better in mahogany. It was thick and aggressive like the Warpig, with incredible articulation but with less dominance in the bass. Scrub what I said at the start of this post; I would suggest Nailbomb.
BKP owned:

Bridge - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; A-Bomb; Holydiver; Miracle Man; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Neck - Emerald; Cold Sweat; Crawler; Holydiver; Sinner; Trilogy Suite

Thanks for the feedback! Anyone interested in trading my C-Pig for a Nailbomb or Aftermath?
