Abraxas on a Schecter Avenger Blackjack ATX

Hello everybody,

I will receive a Schecter Avenger Blackjack ATX in June, and I will not keep the stock active pickups in it (Seymour Duncan AHB-1 Blackout).
As a matter of fact, I have been playing metal/high gain stuff for a long time, and I am looking for something "different"... classic rock & clean/crunch stuffs

Schecter Avenger ATX specs :
- mahogany body without added top
- mahogany set neck
- ebony fretboard
- 24 fret neck
- Tune-O-Matic Bridge by Tonepros, strings thru body, 2 1/16" string spacing (52,4mm)

So I checked some samples (on the official website & on YouTube), and I felt in love with the Abraxas.
I do not want to mimic a specific musician/band, just my own sound, and I expect a deep sound, with good bass, no agressive trebles, moderate output, and excellent dynamics from these pickups.

Some friends are afraid the guitar would be a little bit too muddy with the Abraxas, so they suggest I would rather pick a Black Dog set...

Did I make the right choice with the Abraxas ? (on the verge of ordering it)

I think the Abraxas, which has a nice chimey topend too, will do fine. It's a balanced pickup, a sort of hotter Mule with more mids. The quite middy Black Dog would be a good option too. Choice is merely a matter of taste.

I have just ordered an Abraxas set (53mm spacing for the bridge), Burnt Chrome finish, short legs.
I think they will look great in this aged white guitar, especially with the stock black chrome hardware :D.

I will take pictures as soon as I receive the package.

No problem mate and a belated welcome here for you! There are more 'foreigners' on the forum. We do are best to write proper English, of course some mistakes will slip trough. At least in my case...
I hope the Abraxas works out fine. Post a picture when you got the BKP's in it!  :)

Good choice with the Abraxas. It is a warm and open sounding pickup that has good push in the midrange. Great singing tones are possible with it. It can do harder styles as well.

Those are good news.

I do not have them yet, but already in love with them :lol:.

Anyway, I am sure they will sound "better" than the Duncan Blackout for what I want to play (already have my Vigier Excalibur with Bill Lawrence/Wilde Pickups L-500XL/R for good old metal stuffs).

Hi pals, I have just received my Bare Knuckle Abraxas set !

For the moment, all I can say is that those pickups are beautiful, well crafted, but... I have no guitar left to mount them :lol:.

Still, I shall put some unboxing pictures...

Hi guys ! I have just received my Schecter Avenger Blackjack ATX and... I definitely do not like the stock Seymour Duncan AHB-1 Blackout in it, and... I actually enjoy my BK Abraxas set A LOT !

Maybe I should tease you a little with some pictures...

I took the strings off, but I kept the sixth one in order to test my setup. Got rid off the Blackout :shock: ! There are only the Tune O Matic inserts left.

I put a little screw into the insert, tip upside, and I screw the pot inside the insert : the pot hit the tip of the small screw so that the insert is pulled up, effortlessly.




In this picture, we can see the small screw I put nito the insert.

Once I pulled the insert out of its hole, I made a small channel between the bridge pickup cavity and the insert.
Then, I put a grounding wire into the channel so that the bridge, hence the strings, should be grounded = no disturbing buzz.

Now everything goes easy-cheesy, and I mounted my new Bare Knuckle Abraxas with some additional mods (push-push coil tapping, killpot on the volume pot).

These pickups are very smooth, musical : I could not possibly keep the Seymour Duncan Blackout !
