PRS Custom 24-based guitar, bridge pickup; loads of mahogany
« on: September 29, 2013, 04:31:44 PM »
Hello, everybody! This is my first post here. :)
I've got a luthier-made PRS Custom 24 based guitar. Mahogany body 4,5 cm with a Maple carved top 1,5 cm; so a guitar is quite fat and heavy. ;) Neck is 5 pc. maple/mahogany;12"-16" compond radius, rosewood fretboard. It's got loads of sustain itself; is quite loud sounding acoustically.
At the moment it's fitted with the Seymour Duncan SH-4 in the bridge and it sounds quite horrible IMO. Muddy low notes and stingy highs. I was considering replacing it with the Bare Knuckle pickup and I hope you can recommend me which model to choose.
At the moment I am thinking about Abraxas or The Mule, I want a warm on cleans, versatile pickup which can quite easily handle "lead" playing but as well some Adam Jones kinda' stuff. I don't really need this to be super-tight or ultra high-gain, I prefer the low-impendance, vintage voiced pickups, responsive for articulation.
PS I don't like too much the ceramic pickups' cleans...

Thanks for any help and I'm really sorry for my poor english...

The Mule sounds like an exelent idea. Wonderful PAF sound, balanced in EQ, should sit well with the woods, delivers the tones you want, etc...plus you know what the oposite of a one trick pony is? A mule.

Oh and the guitar looks quite nice I must say. Interresting 12th fret marker.
BKPs in use: 10th set / RY set / Holy Diver b, Emerald n / Crawler bridge, Slowhand mid MQ neck/ Manhattan n

Yeah the mule is supposed to be very versatile but the abraxus is a hotter version of the mule

Yeah, go Mules. They're are superb, articulate and almost 3D-sounding PAF59-replica's and will do anything from jazz to hardrock. Some guys even use them for metal.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Abraxas has more mids than the Mule, which is slightly scooped. Apart from that they are identical.
BKP: Abraxas - Les Paul
Holy Diver - Charvel
Mule - Les Paul
Rebel Yell - Les Paul
VHII - PRS CU22
Emerald - Les Paul
Warpig - Caparison Horus

I agree with you that the SH-4's are terrible.  Harsh mids, rolled off highs and muddy lows -- I'm not sure why so many people swear by these when there's so much better out there.

I second Mules or Abraxas.  The Mules are like PAFs so you know you're going to get amazing cleans and some good crunchy tones.  Some people even use them for metal and pull it off nicely.  As others have said, the Abraxas is a little hotter version, but if a very clean sound is at the top of your requirements then I don't think you'll even need the added output.
Real men turn their volume to 11!

Rebel Yells + Les Paul = the Ultimate Rock Pickup.

riff raff sounds amazing in prs guitars
and does tool really well through the proper rig

the black dog also might work for you if you wanna keep the big midrange focus, but with much greater clarity than the jb

the mule tend to blend the notes a little under higher gain, which can be desirable or not
I loved it for more fluid stuff, big power chords and low/mid gain, but for string separation and picking clarity under lots of gain, the riff raff is hard to beat
