Wiring a pickup for Series/Parallel or Coil Tap Operation.
« on: April 03, 2005, 11:41:02 PM »
Hi there.

I was just wondering how to wire a BK humbucker for series/parallel or Coil tap using a push/pull pot?

Also, what's the difference between wiring a pickup for series/parallel operation against coil tap?

Thanx for any info  :D

Hi Craig,

As long as you've go 4 conductor wire you can access all of the above options easily-I'll be posting wiring schematics for them very soon but both mods are easy to do with a DPDT push pull pot or switch.
Coil tapping or coil shunt grounds out one of the two coils in a humbucker giving you psuedo single coil tone.
Series operation is standard humbucking where the signal is routed through one coil and then the other.
Parallel tone is still humcancelling but produces a thinner tone as the signal is routed through both coils simultaneously-players like Paul gilbert use this a lot.

Both humbuckers I have came with 4 Conductor wiring (Black Dog bridge and Riff Raff neck).

Is there anychance you'd be able to give me a brief run through of where the pickup wires would go in-order to achieve Series/Parallel switching using a Push/Pull pot?

Thanx for any info you can offer.

The main differences there will be that BAREKNUCKLE will use a reverse magnet for the neck pickup, so you have to have reversed neck wiring also to get everything working in-phase. This is in order to be able to fit a regular PAF style pickup (one row of screws) the correct way around in the guitar and still get hum cancelling between the inner coils of bridge and neck together. Other brands simply use a symmetrical neck pickup and fit it in the guitar backwards.
Miss you Dime.
