Searching for replacement for Juggs on swamp ash guitar
« on: May 13, 2018, 05:14:08 PM »
Hi everyone!

Not so long I got my brand new just made customshop guitar with the next specs:

 - 5 pieces bolt-on neck maple / wenge
 - macassar fretboard
 - scale 27"
 - swamp ash body with poplar burl top
 - BKP Juggernaut set

As you can see - quite ordinary specifications :)

I'm in love with BKP PUps, but my experiment has been unsuccessful this time.
Juggs with swamp ash and other stuff gave a quite muddy sound with slightly soaped structure of distortion.

Could anyone please propose me what would be the best replacement for juggs here?

I'm oriented to modern metal sound like Periphery and in my case I'd like to get more open and bright sound.

An finally I'd like to get rid of any mud.

I had a few made of mahogany guitars with Aftermaths but I can't imagine how would it sound on swamp ash.

I've read that the Aftermaths don't sound great in swamp ash

I would tend to recommend the Impulse set or maybe the alnico Black Hawk set.
BLACK HAWKS
IMPULSES
COBRA-T
WAR PIGS
STOCKHOLM
COLD SWEATS
MIRACLE MAN
TRUE GRIT

Yeah, Impulses or Warpigs. I have the same guitar as you (except for the top, mine is not a FT) with Juggs and I like them a lot anyway. Or maybe the Rags?

If you want to stay in the higher output range, Ragnaroks would give you a leaner low end/low mid, but it's definitely going to give make for a midrangey combination - I like that but YMMV. I'd stay well away from Warpigs if you find the Juggernauts to be muddy and lacking brightness.

Personally, I'd strongly urge you to look at lower output options such as the Black Dog, which has a naturally tight and clear sound with plenty of midrange grind, plus the more open character from not being too heavy a wind. I think it'd be a fantastic choice for your application, especially given your thoughts on the Juggernauts.
You could even consider a Riff Raff, which is brighter and more open again. Don't worry, neither the Black Dog nor Riff Raff will sound weak or "vintage" in your guitar.

Guys, thank you so much for the response

Nolly, there is always a chance that pickups aren't guilty in my problem...
And it would be a tragedy for me. Replace the pickups is much simplier than replace the guitar  :blank:

Firstly I thought to install Nailbomb + VHII set as it is meet quite often on Skervesen with similar specs.

The second candidate was a Miracle Man set - this set I've seen on Skervesens too.

Now I try to find samples of all suggested pickups but I'm already scared that the deal is in my guitar, not in pickups.

I still think the Impulse set might be your best bet.  It has a bit less output than the others you've considered though.

An alternative would the the Black Hawk (maybe still with the Impulse neck) if you want more output but it might be overpowering somewhere with your woods.  I think though that in general the blade pickups seem to be less fussy about woods etc

Output wise the Impulses seem to be close to the Juggernauts though

This video compares them (in am LTD H-1000).

I'm with Nolly here. Black Dogs or maybe even Emeralds (could be not tight enough for you). Personally I like lower output pickups > highgain amps. You might not expect it, but even Mules can shred. I believe Nolly did a track with Mules.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

It appropriates to my taste - pickups with mid output are more preferable for me in hi-gain sound.
I think I must try black dog set. So, the only thing is left - to order the new set of pickups.
Thanks to all once again  :cheesy:
